What's your favourite mixed drink and how do you make it?

Nothing elaborate for me.

A thick finger of Bourbon and the remainder ice cold ginger ale. This is only slightly superior to a finger of Scotch and the remainder ginger ale. The Bourbon or Scotch should be good to medium quality. Using a very high quality whiskey is an adulteration of a product that should be savored straight, at room temperature and sipped slowly. A whiskey of any less quality, and the drink tastes "muddy."

To me, the flavors in these whiskeys seem to be complimented by the ginger flavor and they go together like coffee and cream.

If you really want the ultimate, a 50 - 50 mixture of Stones Ginger Wine and Scotch is called a "Whiskey Mac," but it is not for the faint of heart. It should only be drunk out of a shared flask, while on horseback, when everybody's wet and cold and steam is coming off the horses after a long gallop. :cloud9:

Let's see... My favorite mixed drink at a really good steaky kind of restaurant is the classic Long Island Ice Tea, which is almost never made well anywhere else. My favorite at an open bar/catered affair sort of place is the hard to ruin Tanqueray and Tonic with a twist. My favorite regular restaurant cocktail is a Bourbon Sour, and my favorite drink at my parents' friends houses is the second Martini. (I always hate the first one and adore the second, for some reason.)

I have no idea how to make any of them because I never make mixed drinks myself. :martini:

I'm only proficient at making two mixed drinks:

1. Sloe Gin Fizz
2. White Russians

Sloe Gin Fizz
2 ounces sloe gin
teaspoon sugar
1 ounce lemon juice
5 ounces club soda

Shake (this is where you get the fizz), and serve.

White Russian
1.5 ounces vodka
1.5 ounces coffee liqueur (kahlua)
5 ounces milk

I always serve this drink "on the rocks".

Since nobody said the drink has to be alcoholic, I find a mix of 40/60 mix of cocoa cola and minute maid to be interesting. Got more bite to it than ordinary cola, and if you get it right you get an evil looking brown drink with orange bubbles.

The last mixed drink I had was Amaretto di Seranno and Coke. Yuck. I have officially sworn off hard liquor since I puked my guts out election night.

Bumping this thread to share something very delicious that I invented. I'm not going to say that it's my favorite mixed drink ever, but it is definitely worth a shot, and I think it may even be superior to the original.

I really, really wanted a Bloody Mary, but I didn't have any Tabasco, or Worcestershire, or celery, or horseradish. I took inventory of my fridge, decided to hazard a Vietnamese variation (bear with me), and the Bloody Nguyen was born!

Bloody Nguyen

Juice of half a large lime
A good squirt of rooster sauce or other Thai or Vietnamese chili sauce
Dash fish sauce
Half to 1 teaspoon wasabi, depending on how hot you like your Bloodies
1 grind black pepper

1.5 oz citrus vodka, like Absolut Citron

Large glass, chilled
V-8 juice
One lemongrass stem

In the bottom of glass, mix first five ingredients very, very well. Add vodka, then ice, and fill the rest of glass with V-8. Use lemongrass as stirrer.

If this sounds way too weird, consider that both fish sauce and Worcestershire are made with anchovies, wasabi is basically horseradish, and rooster sauce is tastier than Tabasco anyway. I am aware that wasabi is Japanese and not Vietnamese, but we'd had sushi the night before, therefore had some leftover wasabi, and the rest is history. It's a Pacific-Rim thing. Drink up!

vodka gibson

a vodka martini with a pearled oniion or 3 instead of olives.

take a small amount of vermouth swirl it around in a martini glass, pour out the vermouth, fill glass with either skyy vodka or grey goose, add some pearled onions on a little plastic sword or toothpick or just toss the fucking things in.

drink.

repeat.

screwdriver

fill glass with ice,

fill glass 3/4 of the way full with either gray goose or skyy vodka, toss in a little oj mostly for color and enjoy.

when I go out its grey goose cuz shots of grey goose and skyy seem to cost the same at bars and grey goose does taste a little better than skyy but probably not really worth being almost twice as expensive.

Hey Rev...As a bartender I gotta say, your concoction sounds fantastic!! If I may make a suggestion for those out there who like this sort of thing and like them spicy: Instead of Absolut Citron, use Absolut Peppar.

My personal favorite for a Fun drink is the Bailey's Comet.

You'll need:
Rocks glass
1/2 oz. of Bailey's
1/2 oz. of Kalhua
Splash of 151 rum
cinnamon shaker
a flat plate
a straw
matches

Pour in your Kalhua. Tilt the glass and slowly pour in the Bailey's. It will float on top of the Kalhua. Then top with the 151. Light with the match. You'll get a really purty blue flame. Shake a healthy amount of cinnamon onto the fire. This will create a "sparkler" effect. Allow the drink to burn for a few seconds, then extinguish by inverting the plate over the top. Dip in your straw and suck the shot down. The shot won't be hot, but the glass will be, which is why I never allow my customers to touch the glass. It makes a great birthday drink, especially when there's a bunch of them being served at once. Anything I get to light on fire makes me happy....

live to ride,

I have to question any bartender who champions absolut anything over skyy and grey goose.

but your baily's comet sounds good, cant you take the still flaming shot and hope that the baily's will put out the 151 in your mouth?

I would like to try that.

It reminds me of a B52. I love that cinammon sparkles tip. I need to figure out how to use that in a baked alaska or something. Not that I've ever made a baked alaska, mind you. I'm just sayin' it's cool. :yup:

beyelzu...Grey Goose is 100 times the vodka that Absolut is! No question. The ONLY use I have found for the Absolut Peppar is a tomato based drink, like the one above. For any other drink calling for vodka, GG is my first choice. When GG makes a pepper vodka, I'm sure it will blow Absolut out of the water.
As for the Bailey's comet, I would not reccommend drinking it without putting it out! Dribble even a little down your chin, and your clothes are up in flames!!! Not to mention the possibility of igniting all your nostril hair. Also, when the drink is taken from the bottom of the glass up, the last thing you taste is the cinnamon, which is much nicer than the 151! :D

liv, it's pretty much the same as a B-52, except there's no Grand Marnier and it's flammable! :lmao: The cinnamon effect is what makes it such a hot seller. People see me light them up, and HAVE to know what that cool drink was. And it's not a "harsh" drink, so everyone likes it!

Long Island Ice Tea, But I like to make my own. I also prefer to top shelf it. 1 shot each of Vodka, Gin, white Rum, and Triple Sec, and half a shot of light Tequila. Mix with 4oz sweet and sour. Forget the splash of coke, it only delutes it. Now if you take all those ingredients and replace the sweet and sour with Blue Maui, you have a Blue Mother Fucker.

I also like any of the Pucker Fuckers too. Equal portions of any flavor Pucker, Vodka, and squirt.

I like to make something, but not sure what it's called. I use eaqual portions on Peach Schnapps, Vodka, OJ, and Cranberry Juice.

The correct blue liquer for a blue mother fucker is blue curaco. Who ever invented blue maui should be shot on sight. :P

The dish was actually invented by an Italian chef in the 70s as a marketing device for the new pepper vodka which had just been introduced to the market. :) Here's (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?p=46803#post46803) my Penne alla Vodka recipe, LiveToRide. If you're using Ab Peppar you can skip the whole soak red pepper flakes in vodka trick.

I used Citron (actually the Skyy version, the name of which I don't know) because it was what I had. Rooster sauce is an order of magnitude spicier than Tabasco and wasabi is burnier than regular horseradish, also the citrus vodka seemed to make for a nice finish. I'd be kinda scared of a Bloody Nguyen made with Peppar, unless I was already off my head and in remarkably good digestive health.

Next time I am in possession of a bottle of pepper vodka, though, I'll give it a whirl and report back with notes.

That's the thing about these spin-offs from Bloody Marys: Everyone has their own preferences. When I drank, I adored a spicy, knock-you-on-your-ass, make your eyes water and your upper lip sweat bloody mary. Horseradish, black pepper, tabasco, mustard seed...it ALL went in there! Plus fresh squeezed lemon, so the citrus vodka was overkill. IMO, of course. I'll have to try my recipe with the wasabi and rooster sauce, though. It sounds excellent.

Favorite mixed drink?

That depends upon the prevailing weather conditions.

Sunny & warm means Gin & Tonic:

1/4 lime squeezed over ice in 12 oz. glass, toss in rine.

Fill glass 1/3 with gin.

Top with tonic water.

I prefer Bombay Sapphire gin and Schweppe's tonic water

Cool and inclement means Irish coffee:

3/4 cup strong hot coffee

add and dissolve 1 tsp. sugar

top with a bit of whipping cream

add at least one jigger (more if it's a mug) Bushmills Irish whiskey

top with whipped cream.

I'm a died in the wool Bushmill's fan, but there are other worthy Irish whiskies out there...just don't use Murphy's.

I'm also a G&T guy, except I like Boodles, plus a bendy straw. The bendy straw is important. (And sometimes, if I don't have limes, I use Rose's lime juice, but that is way lame and not nearly as good, and I am kind of embarassed that I do that.)

I am just not very fancy. Other than that, I just drink beer and sometimes scotch.

Yea, woe is me...for I, too, have sinned thus. Bendy straws, eh?

I don't drink beer, as it puts me to sleep.

Scotch, and it's close cousin, Irish, are near and dear to my heart. On the rocks; I like it cold. Glenfiddich and Black Bush always grace my liquor cabinet along with the Bombay Sapphire. That is the holy trinity in my home. I call upon the spirits within upon a regular enough basis to know the friendly ones.

This is what I'm thinking: Those little miniature lime trees. You can get houseplant-sized hybrid Meyer lemon, key lime, and blood orange trees and grow them in your house. Fresh organic citrus!

As far as the bendy straws go, I can't tolerate heat. I wilt. If I actually had to lift my head up and drink like a grownup, I'd probably just end up sitting there whining until someone came and poured it down my throat for me. (Hmm. This summer, maybe I'll try giant baby bottles instead. That would be pretty cool.)

Ah, a fellow heat-wimp. Hail, comrade.

The giant baby bottles sound like a capital idea. Especially for hammock-swinging and cloud-watching or star-counting.

I like a good Crown and ginger ale with a twist. Repeatedly. I'm not too big on beer though, I don't like the taste. I was in a band once called "Free Beer". We played in different pubs that would put up signs that said, "Tonight, live at the Oasis, Free Beer!" Oh yeah. Good times. :sly:

I don't care for beer, except for Guinness, so I loves me some Black Velvets.

1/2 Guinness
1/2 Champaign (or if you're poor, hard cider gives you a Black Velveteen)

That's a tasty drink, and you have to love the history behind it.

I used to like 7&7 when I was younger. The first time we were allowed to have alcohol in basic training (like graduation week or something, iirc) I told the guy who was going on the liquor run to get me a bottle of Seagrams and some 7-up. He came back with 7-up and Seagrams extra dry gin.

Of course it tasted like shit with the 7-up, so I was forced to drink it all straight. :D
