From what I'm given to understand it's a requisite response to any thread made by coberst, since he never replies to any thread he makes. It may be used in other threads as well, but I'm unaware of it.

As a general thing, it's a dumb little tradition that started on really populous web forums, probably originating on Slashdot, where the traffic is so high that getting in the first post is like a big deal. Some places would have like the first dozen or so comments be 'first.'

It's also one of the major motivations behind moderation systems that include negative ratings, because the sort of high traffic forums that attract 'firsts' also tend to have enough traffic to bury the 'firsts.'
