I'm not really dropping out but I won't be pursuing a BA immediately. I'm getting an Associates degree from Axia College at the University of Phoenix, and because I was under the impression that I could leverage the credits I've earned at UP toward a Bachelor's from Texas State University, I went ahead and applied for admission at TSU for the spring term. I was accepted, but when I went in to meet with an advisor they told me that all but a few of the UP credits were only transferrable as electives.

In other words, they said, if I want to get a BA from TSU I have to take at least two years of classes at Austin Community College first. On the bright side, I could probably finesse a job making 30-40k less than I do now with my bitchin' UP Associates degree, all for the low cost of ~15k.

Needless to say I'm less than enamoured with the whole process at this point, and if I do take any classes at ACC it's only because my student loans are only deferred as long as I appear to be pursuing a degree. Oh, and because I want to meet chicks.

That blows. I have to ask, who or what gave you the impression that the UP credits were easily transferable? Have you checked other BA programs to see if they will accept more than Texas State does?

Also, don't they have some kind of tests you can take in lieu of actual courses at most universities? Could your education from UP aid in a more roundabout way (meaning you can pass those tests?)

I'm not sure if anyone in particular gave me that impression. I guess I just assumed that credits obtained at an accredited school would be recognized by any other school. Actually TSU does recognize all the credits I earned at UP (they require that one has at least 45 credits to transfer), they just didn't mention during the application process that they would only count as elective credits and would therefore be useless for their BA program.

I don't know if any other BA programs would accept more or if I even care to look. The reason I wanted to go to TSU is that they have a nearby campus for non-traditonal students -- ie. mostly evening and weekend classes -- that offers all the requirements for a Computer Science degree. In all honesty I didn't even want to pursue a BA in Computer Science, I just thought it would be the most logical degree to roll an Associates in IT into.

I say that meeting chicks makes it totally worth the effort... period.

Man, that sucks vm. After all that hard work, it just doesn't seem right at all.

Did you check to see if the classes will transfer to Austin Community college? If they do, and you can finish your associates' there, the TSU folks might honor it as part of an accredited degree from that college. It might be an end run around their policy.

inland wave, an UoP student herself, talked to representatives from OSU and OU about transferring. They advised getting her degree from UoP first, then go to graduate school at their schools.
