Actually, it's not nearly as harsh as I imagined. Fairbanks has more extremes. I mean it's cold, but liveable. It's manageable.

I did do a doubletake at the guy in shorts at the airport tonight. I'm guessing he's not a tourist.

Furthest north I've been was in Stockholm, at 59° and most southiest I've been was in Costa Rica, at about 9.5°.

My parents and brother have been to South Africa, so that's pretty southy. My brother might have been the southiest of my family, if he had gone to Melbourne, but I'm not sure if he did, or if Sydney was the furthest south he went when he visited Australia.

My mom, as I mentioned, lived above the Arctic Circle for a time (during her childhood) so she's easily the northiest of my family.

I've crossed into the southern hemisphere by just a few miles when flying to Singapore.

The furthest north I've been was while flying. I've flown London to Los Angeles and Hong Kong to London. The great circle routes take you well north on both those flights, though the exact track depends on the jet streams and other factors.

Farthest north I've been on the ground is Dunnet Head (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunnet_Head) 58:degrees:40' when I rode a motorbike to the four extreme compass points of mainland Britain during a single weekend.

In fact more of Africa is in the northern hemisphere than in the south.

The east coast is actually the worse for the cold weather, because the gulf stream skips by it and because it gets blasted with Arctic winds in the winter.
