No not trying to catch nerds with a copy of PCGamer on a hook. Fishing for technical minded people like me.

Here's the situation. For Xmas I was given a Bass Pro Shops gift card. I saw this as a golden opportunity to get my first Baitcaster setup. I already have a spinning setup for heavier and bigger fish, but I want a Baitcaster for general purpose fishing and something with a smaller rod.(the 7' rod on my other pole is great, but when you get a 4 lb bass it can't really fight me so its no fun)

Now the issue I'm running into is that all he fishermen I know are the goo ol boy type. Two of them couldn't Identify the setup they had. one called his spinning reel an open face( there is an open face, its a spinning reel without a bail) and the other called his old fashioned baitcasting reel a "big ol reel" Most of these guys would be just as happy with a line and hook on a stick. Are there no technical minded fisherman out there?

I think you are looking for 'fly fisherman'.

In my experience, they are the ones who are more intimately involved with physical details and mechanical function of their fishing tools.

Not enough streams around where I live. Plus you can get technical with angling equipment even if jim bob doesn't

Go and get a lite duty "Ugly Stick" with an open face spinning real. Something about 6 foot in length.

I already have a spinning reel on a 7' shakespear( not an ugly stick) the whole combo was the Bass Pro Shop Stampede. I just bought the Bass Pro Shops Pro Qualifier Baitcast reel. High speed (7.1:1) left handed retrieve(important) and I also bought a 6' medium action Ugli Stick.

There are, I believe, two States where fish hunting is legal. (Vermont being one of them, IIRC) Forget the reel, spend the Basspro card on a rifle.

Come on CT what self respecting soldier doesn't own one already. Plus I like the challenge. I've been shooting most of my life, but only seriously fishing for the last year.

A self-respecting soldier would have at least two, not one... :P Besides, fish hunting can't be that easy, can it?

(OK, I actually can contribute absolutely nothing constructive to this thread)

Does the local pbs outdoors show have a website with a forum? Maybe you could find some similar-minded folks there. There's probably a state publication for sports fisherfolk, too.

I also have nothing to contribute, except that I find this "Bass Master" title punny and ripe for humorous abuse.

I have a variety of rods for different uses,

I two stiffnesses of fly rod, for depending on what im doing

-I have couple of regular spin real cast rods,

-some heavier trolling rods,

- down rigger setup that physically bolts to side my boat

-I also have 3 jigging rods

-a bucket with few small holes in the bottom works great for Frazer river ooligans. an ooligan is a greasy slightly larger than sardine sized fish. I cook them until the bones go soft and just eat them whole, they only do their spawning run once every 4 years though.
