I went through the entire threadlist for computers and technology to make sure there wasn't one I was missing, and much to my suprise, we don't have a "show your desktop thread."

I am a linux user. If you're looking for premade themes for any linux windowmanager you'll find 3 different kinds:
Blue.
Penguin.
Blue penguin. I like neither blue nor penguins, so I shuffled along with various weird mishmashes for awhile until now. I've now assembled a more cohesive color-scheme and window-widget set from a variety of sources(modified solaris (http://www.gunfleet.com/solaris/images/cde1.png) color scheme, fahrenheight (http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=2108) window decorations, "iKons" icon-set, nonstandard fonts, my very own (http://burningsmell.org/skinfu/blueskew.html) theme for XMMS and dual flowers, lucky google find for a desktop image (http://burningsmell.org/powerbook_xray.jpg)) and tweaked a whole lot to create this:

FFers, what's your desktops?

XP tosses unused desktop icons into a folder, so you don't see many. I use those quick launch icons to start most apps. I don't have any windows open 'cause I use everything at full-screen and switch between windows using alt-tab or the links at the bottom.

Daamn... That is seriously badass, Corona. I've just got your basic XP silver theme going on, and in general I keep my desktop as spartan as possible. Right now it's sporting a gorgeous picture of Venus I found at Caedes.net (thank to Ex-zombie who posted it in our Links section).

Here's what I use most often for my desktop background. It is a portion of M17, The Swan Nebula. Like all the desktop backgrounds I use, I got it from APOD (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html).

That's a beautiful picture, Skep. Have you checked out the space category (http://www.caedes.net/Zephir.cgi?lib=Caedes::Gallery&gallery=space) at Caedes? I prefer it to APOD for wallpaper purposes just because it offers high quality pics for different screen resolutions.

Skep

No, liv, I've never seen that site before. Thanks for posting the link. Yeah, one of the drawbacks of APOD is that some pics don't have a high res version available. Fortunately, that is not the case with the M17 pic. :)

It is one of the desktop themes my daughter installed on my computer. I did a google search for the file name-Water Bubbles. Looks like it was made by Wanda's Themes n Things. It seems the website has been temporarily taken down due to hacker activity.

I could say you're wrong ... but it would be nitpicking. It's from the short "Jack-Jack Attack" on The Incredibles DVD - it doesn't appear in the movie itself. The baby Jack-Jack discovers the power of setting himself on fire (to the babysitter's horror). The following sequence where he toddles around the room accidentally setting fire to things and gurgling with happiness is a delight!

Anyway i have changed my desktop to a different image, taken by me:

I like that look too, but I don't do it too often because most of the time the middle of my desktop is covered by a window. So I'd rather have something that I can at least see the edges of. Otherwise I wouldn't mind going with a more pristine desktop.

You are correct, I could auto-hide the dock just like can be done with the start bar in windows. Only, I. Hate. That. I have tried it, for Sparta's sake and for the benefits liv mentioned, I just can't deal with that thing jumping out at me when I bring my mouse to the bottom (or side or top) of the screen. Usually I'm trying to get to something that's down there, and the start bar or dock pops up and covers up whatever I'm trying to get to! Grr!

Mine changes every now and again. Sometimes it's a APOD, sometimes it's a painting, sometimes it's a photograph, sometimes it's a cartoon - whatever takes my fancy at the time. And I also dislike a cluttered desktop. Spartan rules. :yup:

At the mo, it's a matching set with my avatar. Yesterday, it didn't match my avatar, but was a rillyrilly cool photograph of the inside of the Guggenheim. In a few days it will change again, I suppose. :)

Lovely picture g, but it's not a raw photo. The day/night contrast would be much greater than that ... there would almost always be more clouds ... and I don't know if you could see the seabed contours like that. It's a composite made by the NASA imaging team.

I'm using the image I posted a few weeks ago of Orion's belt, Alnitak, Alnilam, and Mintaka:

Every party's got a pooper and this party's pooper's you... :notes:

I suspected as much when I didn't see a single cloud in that vast expanse. And, that largish conglomeration of light in inland northern Algeria aroused suspicions, too. Like...there's not community of any size down there. (Maybe it's one of the secret CIA interrogation camps?)

I still like it anyway.

Here's what my current desktop looks like when I'm not doing anything. It's completely unremarkable except for the fact that it stretches over two monitors, which is useful in that I keep chat windows, media players, etc. open over on the right hand monitor and whatever I'm actually working on open in the left monitor. The wallpaper is just some random Natalie Portman thing I stumbled across while Googling for something else. If I remember later, I'll take an action shot later while I'm gaming on the left monitor and browsing :ff: on the right.

Judging by your desktop icons you have had this machine for less than a month.

A Media Center PC really can't do much of anything unless you have compatible devices which there are none including M$'s own Xbox 360(unless you get lots and lots of updates and do lots and lots of fiddling).

In theory you should be able to download an MP3 or MPEG video on the PC and have it stream to your TV, but M$ does too much copyright respecting shite to actually have it work.

You have an XPS? Awesome! I do as well. I don't have the 24" display, though. I own the 20" widescreen display. I have it set at 1680 by 1050. The best thing about having my computer is that I now have the muscle to watch high definition movie trailers. Having that ability truly rocks.

Seriously, though, I have tried out quite a few of the Media Center functions and am quite pleased with what it can do. I never intended it to be my PVR since I'm not willing to leave my computer booted up 24/7, but if it had been my desire, I would be quite happy with its capabilities. It did an excellent job of recording a couple of shows which were easily and quickly burned to DVD. The remote for Media Center and a wireless keyboard and mouse and the large monitor will allow me to set it so that I can sit in a different chair farther back from the monitor -- a distant that seems to reduce the multiple images I usually get at regular desk sitting distances.

Still, I realize there were plenty of packages and setups to do all those things with standard winXP. But this was out-of-the-box easy. And yes, I've barely had 20 hours total on this new computer to date.

I was pretty close to buying another Alienware, since I loved my previous one so much.

I'm very happy with this computer and glad I went for it. Also, IMO you just can't beat those Ultrasharp LCDs from Dell! I saw the 37" Ultrasharp tv/monitor and was tempted; if I hadn't already purchased the 24", I would have. Even though I have an awesome living room home theater set up, like you, I am pleased to have the muscle to watch video/DVDs/tv -- there is so much more content available for download that it does make a difference.

Not hard at all...they act like one big monitor, so I just move the mouse off the edge of one and it appears on the other. The left one is 19" and the right is 17". I'm hoping to upgrade the left to a 21" widescreen that a friend might sell me when he gets a biger one soon, in which case the current left monitor woulf become the right monitor and the current right monitor would end up in the closet.

Thanks. I am glad you like the transparency. *Hugs latest Nvidia drivers.* It does get somewhat problematic reading threads, though. It would be more effective if the background behind the transparency were blurred a little. I am still tweaking things to optimize the effect. As such, I am using Firefox and another program to test out the transparency effect. Once I get the best look, I'll make it standard across all the programs I use most with Mozilla (not Firefox) being the exception.

Sssh. Don't tell how I'm playing the solitaire and listening to the rock music when I'm supposed to be working.

You know, I never would have pegged you as the Hubble pic desktop type. It's a little disconcerting, frankly.

I just thought it looked dirty. Does that make you feel better? Or at least distract you sufficiently to make you quit PICKING ON ME?

What did you think I should have, little Miss Bossy McKnowEverything?

I dunno. Some kind of stick figure in a horrific but amusing rictus, maybe. Or possibly Sluggo sniffing Maturin's ass while TLM cheers him on. Either way, it would definitely look dirty.

For a while, I put lemonparty as my wallpaper because I thought certain people were being way too casual about using my computer alla time. I didn't want to issue an outright prohibition or anything, but I figured as a sort of behavioral modification tool, you know? Make a guy think about whether he really needs to be using my computer.

You know, I should probably be posting this in one of those "Parenting Advice" threads.

New desktop image for me. 24" monitor at 1680x1050, so it really does seem like looking out my kitchen window on a pretty day.

My desktop is a 1600x1200 thing of blank grey pixels; I run Unix, and I don't have a "desktop" file manager of any sort.

I never use desktop backgrounds; I used to, but I found them more annoying than beneficial, so I went to flat colors. Grey, mostly.

I never use desktop backgrounds; I used to, but I found them more annoying than beneficial, so I went to flat colors. Grey, mostly. That's the way I usually feel about it. I'd been using the mostly black XPS desktop image that came with this Dell computer since I got it beginning of this year. But I couldn't resist this reminder to ..erm... get my butt outside every once in a while.
Gorgeous mountain view, pesci. Are those geraniums in the hanging planters? Thanks! I imagine my near-backyard may look nice someday if I ever get around to landscaping it... And :yup: Those geraniums usually aren't blooming so much this time of year, but we had a week or so of 80:degrees:+ weather and they gave me a nice late fall show.

slimshady, that hippo looks like he was posing just for your photo! Amazing how those creatures can move so fast even with such massive bulk.

How do you post a pic of your desktop, liv?

livius drusus

If you're using Windows, all you have to do is press your Prt Sc (print screen) button, then open any graphics program and click on Edit-Paste. Save the pic, attach to the post and voila! :)
