Today was my one year anniversary of being the the Air Force. By an amazing coincidence, today was also the day that I was (FINAL-FUCKING-LY) released from training and into my job. I didn't actually do any work, but it still felt good. I didn't do work because I had to do all kinds of fun stuff like getting computer accounts and passwords and junk set up. I also had to update contact info and other neat admin shit. There was a bit of walking around, getting the tour, being introduced to key people.

I got my schedule, which is Monday-Friday, 7 to 3. A bit early for me, but absolutely nothing to sneeze at! Most of my friends are working shift: nine-day work-weeks (six on, three off), alternating between days and mids. A junior enlisted puke like myself getting every evening and every Saturday and every Sunday off is beyond scandalous, I tell you what! Next they're going to tell me they close for holidays! (I'm not holding my breath though) This is great news for my mom, as she was considering coming out weekend after next, but her trip was on hold until we determined whether I would be working or not. Well I'm not, and she's going to come out. Yay!

I also got a glimpse of my immediate future. In mid-April I will go TDY to Washington D.C. for one day. Man, seems like a waste of a trip. I won't be able to do any touristy stuff. Oh well, it'll be cool anyway. Then in July and August, they are sending me to Pensacola, FL, (I think it's Pensacola, anyway) for more training. Six weeks! Yay! I get to stay in a hotel and get per diem and party with the other trainees.

Wow, my shit day yesterday followed by such fan-fucking-tastic news all day to day... it's too much for my old heart to take. Not that I'm complaining (anymore).

Cool beans. Pensacola is the closest city to my new home, so you have to take some time to come visit.

Congrats anyway!

Temporary DutY. We always add "Yonder" since that whole acronym using an ending Y is just lame and the term generally means working at a different location from the normal one, i.e., yonder.

(But don't take my word for it. I'm not military, I'm just working here.)

Ensign Steve, congrats on starting in on your "real" job!

There's also money to be made from TDYs -- or so they tell me. In nearly 9 years, I never went TDY, even for training.

Welcome, Airman Ensign, to the "real" Air Force! Enjoy!

I just say TDY stands for Temporary Duty. Anyone who asks what the Y stands for gets weird looks from me. :eh?: ('what Y?')

And, yes! There is some serious coin to be made! I was talking to a couple of guys who just got back from the Florida training. One of them got a $1000 travel advance, which was enough to cover most of his expenses while he was there, including hotel, food, gas, and entertainment. His regular paycheck paid bills and went into savings. Then when he got back, the balance of his travel voucher (balance due him from the govt) was something like another 1300. woot! Can you say 'no more car payment'?

And the other guy said it was a total party the whole time. Well, duh!

I never did figure out what the difference between TDY and TAD (Temporary Assignment for Duty) is.

Sometimes we say "Dut-AY" as in Part-AY.
