Although many parents—particularly poor and working-class parents—welcome the prospect of schools tending to a larger portion of their kids' lives, others are so enamored of their summer cottages, travel plans, grandparent visits, after-school piano lessons and soccer leagues that they balk at any big shifts in calendar or schedule.

more hours to imbibe important skills and knowledge; fewer hours outside school to waste or get into trouble;

Disadvantaged youngsters really need—for their own good—the benefits of longer days, summer classes and Saturday mornings in school.

Just wow. Either you're a poor who needs your kid in school more hours to keep them out of trouble and/or from wasting time, or you're too enamored with your vacations and useless family visits and silly outside interests to ensure your kids are properly educated.

What a tool

Why not just put all the "disadvantaged youngsters" in juvie? You know, for their own good.

Someone in the comments said something like "How about locking all kids up in education camps?"

Oh and then Ensign Steve found this Increasing Number Of Parents Opting To Have Children School-Homed | The Onion - America's Finest News Source (http://www.theonion.com/articles/increasing-number-of-parents-opting-to-have-childr,17159/)

They should get 14 days off a year that must be scheduled in advance but can be interrupted at the teachers discretion, Saturday shouldn't be mandatory but your grade will suffer if you don't go in, they should be given homework randomly at all hours of the day via school supplied cell phones, they should be given arbitrary deadlines and rush projects they can do in their spare time on laptops in the car driving to see family on their "weekend", sunny days at the park should include email responses, etc.

Longer hours, extra days, no summer breaks, uniforms, etc.. I'm all for it. That way when the kids gets out of school they'll already be set for the working world. Remember, it's for the children.

Idle hands ....
