View Full Version : Avatar link

Right now clicking on somone's avatar takes one to their profile, which is boring because you get the same place through there name. I was wondering if it would be possible to add a feature where a user can specify where their avatar should link to.

I think this would be cool so that I could click on it and possibly get a larger version of their picture, or click on it and go to their personal website, or something else interesting.

So is this easy, or not worth the effort?

Interesting idea, Crumb. I'll look at the code tomorrow and see if it's possible. Meanwhile anyone else who cares can chime in about whether they'd like to see it implemented.

Chime: sounds good. Just make the hover text clear that it's going to link somewhere else. No one likes a deceiving link.

Yes please. I quit pimpin' my site in my .sig because it was ugly, but it'd still be cool to pimp it in a prettier and more subtle fashion.

The bad news (which shouldn't come as too much of a shocker) is that I completely forgot about this request before I ever looked to see whether or not it's feasible.

The good news is that it's not only feasible, I've implemented it. :)

Go to Member Options --> Edit Profile (or just click here (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/profile.php?do=editprofile)).

You will see a new block at the bottom of the Profile edit page called "Custom Avatar Link".

Enter a URL there and from now on your avatar will link to that location. :)

Leave that field blank if you want your avatar to continue linking to your profile.

Now I need to customize my avatar with something lame like "CLICK ME!" heh

viscousmemories
04-26-2005, 11:53 PM
I'm a little conflicted about the hovertext. Typically, hovertext on an image is used to identify the image. That's why the default text is "Username's Avatar". But now if someone has entered a custom URL the hovertext no longer identifies the image, it identifies where the image links to.

This bugs me. I would rather the hovertext either identify the picture in both cases, or indicate where it links to in both cases. For example, I think it might make more sense to change it to "Click to visit Username's Profile" for the default, and "Click to visit Username's Custom Link" when there's one specified. If anyone wants to know what the custom link goes to, they can look at the status bar.

What do y'all think about that?

Crumb
04-27-2005, 01:30 AM
Maybe you should just let us customize the hovertext too.

Ensign Steve
04-27-2005, 01:51 AM
In the olden days of web design, the "alt" text was usually a description of the picture, because some super low-bandwidth types would browse text-only and you wanted the same message to come across regardless. The location of the link would still show up on people's status bars. But I am torn, because I don't think the status bar is that much of a red flag that it's an external link, if one wasn't expecting that. Long story short, I dunno.

That would kinda defeat the purpose, since someone linking to tubgirl would probably call it "Cute Puppy!"

Long story short, I dunno.

vm, I feel your conflict re the differing interpretations of the hovertext. I also agree with ES's historical review. I just don't think the current W3C approach adequately deals with images that are also links. Sure, describe the image ... but I feel that an unexpected link is more important to advise.

Now I think about it, "Random User's avatar" is not much use as a title. Unless we have some blind members to give us opinions, I'll claim it says nothing and you should go with "View Random User's profile" or "Visit <custom site>" ....
