New study by the Hartford Hospital and the University of Iowa tested 81 subjects smoking marijuana supplied by the Institute of Drug Abuse and the University of Mississippi concluded that driving under the effect of marijuana has little effect on driving skills (http://www.insideline.com/car-news/study-pot-has-little-effect-on-driving-skills.html) associated with crash risk, including avoiding another vehicle that has entered an intersection illegally, deciding whether to stop or go at a changing traffic light, and proper response to the presence of emergency vehicles. They caution that does not mean that it is safe to toke and drive, but then, that's probably a requirement of obtaining the legal marijuana they used in the study.

So the incredibly slow "take 3 bong hits and let's go for a drive" SE Portland drivers aren't a risk to anything, but my sanity, as they crawl through every intersection in the state.

:rage:

"It does not in any way say that it is safe to drive under the influence of any drug," said study investigator Beth Anderson in a statement. "It merely shows us, we need to study this further. We need to know what marijuana does to the brain. We need to understand the ramifications. To create public policy and to keep people safe, you need to know what's really happening in the brain.

I would have thought they would have already done these tests before making it illegal

however with that being said I dont think everyone would be able to drive while smoking pot.

I totally could. I might forget where I was going, kind of like driving while I'm talking. Toking, talking, what's the diff?

Watser?

There is this coffeeshop nearby where they sell weed (and hashish). Used to be that customers would park their car on the pavement, on the bicycle track and halfway on the street and run inside leaving their cars to block traffic. So no, not cool.

Some can't walk and chew gum at the same time, but should we ban walking while chewing gum?

I would have thought they would have already done these tests before making it illegalThat requires the assumption that US drug policy is based on reason and the populace's best interests.

Your response time would still be fucked if you were to get in an accident. It'd be better to just drive the damn two thousand pound machine sober.

I toked and drove quite a bit as a stupid teenager. I never had any trouble driving, although a couple of times I found myself sitting at a stop sign and waiting for it to turn green.

"Hey man, am I driving okay?"
"I think we're parked, man."

I totally agree with this. Bill (my late hubby) used to drive stoned all the time without accident or error. I, on the other hand, cannot handle being stoned at all. I like it but am totally useless when stoned. However, I am a much better functioning drunk than a lot of people.

No, it's not.

Yes it is.

Shut up.

No, you.

I'm reminded of the time my brother was driving with 3 of us in the car and he blithely took his hands off the wheel to light up a joint while entering a curve in the road. Physics being what it is, we headed directly toward a utility pole. I yelled at him about the impending doom. He resumed steering and yelled back, "Why didn't you grab the wheel?"

Another time he was lighting up a joint while steering with his elbows and not watching the road, so I calmly said "Cop."

He was rather peeved after he gulped down a perfectly good joint. I hope the burning end was enjoyable all the way down.

I drive perfectly fine after having toked. The voices even confirm it.
