I'm looking for new ways to kill ground squirrels in mass numbers, I'm not fond of leaving out poison bait though. A friends ranch has been over nun by them, and we've basically been wandering around with with co2 pellet guns just picking them off as we can. Current bag count is near 600, and we haven't even made a dent in their numbers.

Said friend is currently scared of taking his horses out for fear of them breaking a leg in a hole.

btw.. the Richardson ground squirrel is the Canadian version of the gopher (northern US too). we don't actually have gophers up here.

1. Import some cobras.

2. When the cobra population gets out of control, import some mongooses.

3. Profit?

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that wouldn't work. Didn't work on gophers when I tried it.

What did work was a possibly decades-old "Gopher Gasser" that my stepdad had kicking around in his garage. It was this fused thing that looked like a stick of dynamite. You had to dig up the mounds to expose the holes, put paving stones over the exit holes, and light and toss the thing in the entry hole and cover that hole as well.

I don't think they even make those anymore, so it was probably some insanely dangerous thing to use. But I never had any damned gophers ever again.

If you kill all the golfers, they'll lock you up and throw away the key!

This (http://www.bugspray.com/article/groundsquirrel.html) article seems pretty extensive, breaks down types of ground squirrels and possible means to repel and remove. What is their food source that is supporting this population?

My father-in-law got a lot of ground squirrels after the filbert orchard next door got blighted and cut down. He used live traps but it sounds like small potatoes (20-25 through the summer) compared to the army of critters you're up against.

Have you considered dynamite? There is almost no problem that can't be solved with a liberal application of high explosives.
