So most everyone has at least one collection. It doesn't have to be the traditional ones like stamps or coins (though those are interesting too). I bet we all collect books by certain authors or audio CDs by our favourite bands. I don't usually think of myself as a collector, but actually I do collect things to some degree - as well as the usual books, CDs, DVDs, I have a collection of calculators that I've mentioned here before, and a collection of puzzles.
I thought it might be interesting to have a thread where we can post about our collections, maybe post some photos of them and perhaps answer any questions that other posters might have.
Here's a pic of a few of my puzzles to start us off.

I collect books. And collections of books. Here's some of them.

I spotted a Jeffrey Archer hiding under the sleepy bear!

I have a few Archers. Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less is one of my all time favourite books. And the bear is my daughters Husky. And funnily enough (considering some of other discussions here) under the Archer is Hitchens' God is Not Great.

I collect wheat pennies. No, not going to show a picture of them all, they pretty much all look alike.

My book collection got out of hand. I finally decided to give away or trash most of it and only keep a few fiction titles and any reference books I thought I might use in the future. I got rid of hundreds, if not thousands, of books, yet somehow I still have 5 large bookshelves of books.
We collect movies of all kinds and currently have close to 600 titles. And this is after getting rid of a few to make room for some new ones.
And then there is my toy collection. Or rather my lost toy collection. When ever I find a child's lost toy I'll leave it be, but after a couple of weeks, if it is still there, I declare it mine. Not big toys though; more like the kind of toys one gets in a kid's meal plus a few odd ball things. The best ones are those that have some wear and tear to them (meaning that they had been played with.)
I also have a large collection of Atari 2600 and Colecovision games. Yes, I'm a bit retro. (Adventure is still the best game evah!!11ZOMG.)
Sonoma Bear collect decorative balls, African baskets, and exotic plants.
Lost toys plus a few games and puzzles.

I collect books. And collections of books.
ah...but do you have any books on collections of books?
i started collecting amber pieces with ants inside them a little while ago, but kind of gave up on it. i should start it up again because i find them fascinating- like a snapshot in time. i also think ants are about the coolest creatures on earth. i figured they'd amuse me for a while, make interesting conversation pieces and be fun to share and pass on to the kids.
maybe i'll dig out the macro and take some pictures to post here...maybe...i'm lazy.

I collect soundtracks for Peter Sellers movies on vinyl. I really love mid-Sixties soundtrack music and I decided I could do worse than pick an actor and work from there. Casino Royale is the pride of my collection, rare and magnificent.

I collected key chains when I was a teen-still have them somehwere- but how many keychains can one really have? Hubby and I collected shot glasses for quite some time, same deal...at some point they ceased being a collection and became a problem. Now I collect Christmas ornaments.
My SIL puts up 7 Christmas trees and I currently have only 2 (well I have one and Kiddo has one), so I can probably keep going for awhile with that without even raising the "are you insane" eyebrow.
I have a pretty nice collection of Moonstone glassware (http://hubpages.com/hub/Anchor-Hocking-Moonstone-Pattern-Glass), and a shared collection with my mom of Siamese enameled jewelry (http://forever-joy.com/Siam.aspx) (links are just examples, not my collections
As most here know I tend towards hoarding. I don't call it collecting really, I am just a pack rat. I have a big tote bin full of bags (duffle bags, tote bags, shopping bags) and a closet full of fabric scraps, even though I don't sew, boxes full of odds and ends and whatnot.
ceptimus

I also tend to hoard junk but occasionally I summon up the will power to make myself throw it away. :yup:
There's a famous story in England, probably a myth, about people clearing out the house of a dead woman and finding three large wheelie-bins, each filled with string. Labels stuck on two of the bins read, 'Pieces of string over 2 yards long', and 'Pieces of string 1 to 2 yards long'. The third bin which was full to the brim and with strings hanging over the sides was labelled, 'Pieces of string not worth keeping.'

I used to collect shot glasses too, but yeah they're a bitch to move if you don't want to break them. So when I moved out to Georgia we started collecting magnets on our road trip instead. So on the side of our fridge we have a great time-line of our life together so far, which is fun to gaze at while waiting for food to heat up in the microwave or whatever.
Attachments from left to right: the glasses hutch, including both pairs of GB pilsner glasses mentioned in this post (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/showpost.php?p=849282&postcount=50), a couple of low-ball tumblers we got in Puerto Rico, and our wedding toast flutes from Mandalay Bay; a close-up of the shot glasses; and of course the magnets.

I don't really have any on-purpose collections, but I do have a few that happened accidentally, I guess.
Rotary dial phones. Mostly Henry Dreyfus designed 500 models, but I also have others, like a sweet orange Trimline, a pink Princess phone, and a very strange 200 model with an unusual cord. I used to sometimes give these to other people, like if I had redundant ones or something, but then I realized that I think people would like throw them away if they stopped working with their system or something, so I don't do that anymore. Also, it became fashionable at some point to collect these, so they're a lot harder to find than they used to be. I don't think I've added any new ones in several years.
Model 500 keyboards. I think I only have about three left right now, again because I used to give them away, and these too became fashionable so they're harder to find now.
Reference books, with a significant subset of dictionaries. So I do have copies of most major dictionaries, like some abridged Johnsonses and the OED, plus a few other older ones; but also things like Gray's Anatomy, books of formulas, Pantone Matching System booklets (one is now permanently lost--I think someone thought it was paint chips or something and threw it away and that makes my stomach hurt), shit like that. I have a total 21 volumes of Masterplots in the bedroom lol.
I also have a small collection of cold war era books about communism. Some incendiary political commentary such as the seminal work You Can Trust the Communists...TO BE COMMUNISTS!, but also a few action novels about freedom loving Americans who bravely fight against the invading Communists and stuff.
On a slightly related note, there was that one time I realized that I had at least thirteen copies of The Communist Manifesto, so I started giving those away as doorprizes to anyone who came over, and now I only have like four. Would be three, but that was when me and Matlock were doing our repulsive geriatric courting ritual, which involved him gifting me with a really nice new copy with a lovely inscription about how a guy can never have too many copies of the Communist Manifesto.
Oh yeah and I forgot that I once counted and I had over 70 cashmere sweaters and several cashmere coats, but I gave a lot of them away as well, so I probably only have like fifty sweaters and three coats now.
Edit again because I guess I collect collections. I have all of Lotte Lenya's known recordings, except that I got this (http://www.amazon.com/Lenya-Her-Complete-Recordings-1929-1975/dp/B0000251AF) when it came out and again, gave away all but one or two of my redundant CDs.

Oh, I also have like 5 vintage furs (a fox collar, 2 mink wraps, and 2 wool stroller coats with mink trim) so I guess that's kind of collecting. I also have a vintage hat, beaded gloves, and 2 cocktail dresses. Most from the 40's and 50's but one of the cocktail dresses is I think from the early 80's...it is silk and heavily beaded (weighs 2 pounds or so) and has huge shoulder pads. I look like fucking Joan Collins in it, but it's too nice to throw away.

I collect cd's and vinyl records, sorta. At first there wasn't really an alternative for vinyl, so I was just collecting the music, but now I could just download mp3's of course and have the music. But somehow I still think I don't really have it unless I have the cd or record. I prefer records if it was originally released on vinyl.
I have only recently bought this bookcase from Ikea to put the records in (lp's, 7", 10" and 12" singles and ep's). The cd's I have removed from the various bins I had them in and on and around :shiftier: and moved into Ikea cd-obelisks. I have 10 of them in total. In total they should hold 1800 cd's, but they aren't stuffed to capacity. I guess I have something like 1200 or 1300 cd's. Vinyl, I have no idea how much.
ETA: I made a quick guesstimate, it should be something between 950 and 1000 lp's.

I aspire to have 70 cashmere sweaters one day, but I think I only have about half a dozen now.
I have a ton of hedgehog figurines because I love hedgehogs, but those are mostly gifts and not something I actively chose to collect. I used to collect teddy bears but I stopped and got rid of most of them. I sent a box to Caligulette's son when he was little.
One of my nieces has a chunk of my vampire book collection at the moment. She'll give them back if I need them or if she grows out of them. I'm not bothered. I had given them to another niece but then needed them back for a project. I'd like to give them all to a library some day, but I worry they would all get stolen.

I kind of suck at collecting and yet have too many of some odd stuff. I don't have anything officially collected. But I was thinking of things I have at least 10 of that just kind of reproduced around here. Like brooms! I've got at least 10 brooms or more. And scissors. I've got probably 30 pairs of scissors. I might even have 10 ladders. Plush bunnies...probably close to 30 of those. Flashlights ... lots of flashlights!

When I was young I worked at Camelot Music. We got lots of freebie albums (at least a dozen each week), but since I worked with a bunch of rednecks that wouldn't listen to anything but Molly Hatchet I got to keep everything else.
I amassed a collection of well over a thousand albums. I sold them all when I moved out on my own. Oh well. At least I made a nice dime off of them.

When I was in college, I would collect the fliers from the religious nutcases which regularly haunted our quad.
My 2 prize pieces were:
- The Korean church that predicted the world would end October 27, 1992.
- "Fugitive Pope" by Tony Alamo Ministries. Did you know that JPII was a Nazi war criminal? (BTW, Tony Alamo was recently arrested for transporting a minor over state lines.)
Later, I discovered that a flier in my collection was made by Michael Woroniecki - a thoroughly vile individual who received some infamy for influencing Andrea Yates (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrea_Yates).
I still have these all - somewhere. I scanned the Woroniecki flier for an individual posting on JREF who was once a follower and wanted all the documentation he could find.
More recently? I've been buying pocket knives... Mostly multitools - I keep on buying them, hoping I'll find the perfect one.

All things turtle. Turtle keychains, turtle jewelry holders, turtle prints, turtle plush toys, even a turtle harpsichord (the harpsiturtle), turtle salt and pepper shakers from Argentina. People often give me turtle stuff and compounded with the stuff I buy myself, it's turtle-mania.
Also lip balms and lotions and makeups of all sorts but that's more of a hoarding thing.

Hmm, I used to have a small vinyl collection, now it's half the size it used to be and not growing. I've probably owned, at different times, around three times as many books as are on my shelves right now, but a real book collection is more something I aspire to than have ever actually had. I once had 400 odd issues of 2000AD comics (progs 300-700). Does taking photos of icon graphics from signs count?

I have never really purposely collect anything. Mostly you just keep getting more of something until you realize you have a shit ton of it. Well, I did have one real real collection and that was small chicken statues/ figurines. Why? Well when I first began drawing I always drew chickens because they were extremely easy. My aunt took notice of this obsession, she a big collector of Clown figurines, and began to gift me one each week she saw me. Eventually this became a little cluttering and I decided one day to pawn them off on a local thrift store. She did give me one last one, however, which I still have - a golden chicken piggy bank which symbolizes the former collection as a whole, I'd say. Bizarrely my brother had a very bipolar girlfriend a year or so ago and when she heard of this was genuinely impressed, as she has been doing the same thing all her life. She being utterly batshit and that being about all we had in common, I am glad I've gotten rid of mine.
Many other things have been accumulated at this point or else were collections left behind by my brothers when they moved out. This includes many action figures and trading cards and other such things. Of them many are Marvel, Power Rangers,TMNT, Masters of the Universe, DC, Star Wars, Jurassic Park, and tons of Wrestling cards/ figures. All which have quite a sentimental value that we keep them around in piled up boxes and never look at them, like the enormous loot of LEGOs. My favorite trading cards being Marvel comics FLAIR era becuase the art is beautiful.
I actually did start selling off Power Ranger toys on ebay a couple years ago and made a few hundred dollars on old nerd collectors, but managed to keep hold of my MMPR trading cards which I will show first:

The other collector's item that I love (but don't have) is Lomonosov porcelain.
http://www.tableandhome.com/prodimages/71680.jpg
Lomonosov Porcelain Russian Domes Teapot
Founded in 1744 by Peter the Great's daughter, Empress Elizabeth, Lomonosov Porcelain Factory (formerly the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory of St. Petersburg), is one of the oldest porcelain manufactories in Europe. Creating hand-made and hand-painted porcelain in the traditions set by Russian artists and sculptors such as Kandinsky, J-D. Rachette, and others, the quality, beauty and craftmanship of Lomonosov Porcelain is unparalleled.
The Russian Domes pattern evokes the rich heritage and traditions of Mother Russia. The familiar shaped domes of the Russian Church of Christ's Resurrection in St. Petersburg are emulated in hand-painted forms of blue and white. Lomonosov's famous "Cobalt Net" pattern adds accents among the domes, as well as 22 karat gold.
This 25.3 oz. Teapot is just the thing for a perfect cup of tea to share.

I like the shape of the pyramid telephone--the way it's tapered. I guess the first image is also a pyramid shape as well.

You know one of the great things about old phones like that? They make great weapons. You can hurt a fool with those phones.

Oh, seriously? Someone I knew had one when I was little, like a grandma or her friend or someone. I liked tracing those tapered curves with my fingers.

It's weird because my dad has a thing for phones. We had at least 8 in the house at any given time, but the closest to the old-timey pyramids we had was one of those boudoir phones made out of green onyx. It was beautiful and silken and I stroked it often.

I've never seen those pyramid phones before. Very hot.Really? I'm thinking they were rather common in older movies.
I'm sure I've seen them somewhere, and motion pictures are the most likely place. :shakecane:

Somehow I can't picture President Taft holding a cell phone.

President Herbert Hoover was the first president to have a phone directly on his desk.
http://www.manufacturediscontinued.com/gallery/oval-office-1930.jpg
On March 29, 1929 ... .President Herbert Hoover has a phone installed at his desk in the Oval Office of the White House. It took a while to get the line to Hoover's desk working correctly and the president complained to aides when his son was unable to get through on the Oval Office phone from an outside line. Previously, Hoover had used a phone located in the foyer just outside the office. Telephones and a telephone switchboard had been in use at the White House since 1878, when President Rutherford B. Hayes had the first one installed, but no phone had ever been installed at the presidents desk until Hoover's administration.
