View Full Version : Doublepost Hack - Need input!

Because unintentional duplicate posts are a nuisance but we aren't comfortable with the idea of allowing members to delete their own posts, we think a good solution might be to install an "automerge doubleposts" hack. With this hack, any post submitted within a specified timeframe will automatically get added on to the previous post, separated by a customizable message along the lines of "Automerged Doublepost" (thus making it easy for the poster to simply edit their post and remove the duplicate content.)
For example, say I make a post saying: "This thread sucks!!" and because it doesn't immediately submit, I click 'submit' a couple more times. Normally the end result might be three identical posts in a row. But with this hack, the result would be a single post that looks something like this:
This thread sucks!!
Automerged Doublepost
This thread sucks!!
Automerged Doublepost
This thread sucks!!
What do y'all think of this idea?

sounds like it would work, but is there a time frame what if I want to double post like I just did?
in stereo, baby, in stereo

That was my first thought too, bey. The thing is, we can set this to take effect in the space of just seconds, like in the 10 seconds we have flood control set to right now.

Yeah, sure. Whatever.

Even if I was doing one of my marathon postings where I'm all amped up on caffeine and I keep saying, "oh wait, also and..." I probably would be okay with those random thoughts being merged into one post. Also sometimes it might be because I want to quote from more than one person, and I can't be bothered to copy and paste when I could just as easily use the "quote" button two different times, so I end up with several posts in a row in the same thread. If it was all one post, then, yay! That would be even better. Could I go back in then and edit out the "Automerged" part?

How come it worked for him?

Yes ma'am. For the usual 24 hour edit period (edit tag after 10 minutes).

We think that's just flood control. It wasn't him clicking on the same submit button 3 times; that's what tricks the flood control. Once it knows you've actually posted, for 10 seconds after that you can't post.

it said something about duplicate post, and I did click on the submit button 3 times at first but evidentally my dsl is just too fucking fast for that shit or something.

I clicked submit like 5 times and still only got one post, damnit, will I never doublepost while double posting is still possible?

the exact message is
This post is a duplicate of a post you have made in the last five minutes, You will be redirected to that post.
more or less.

That's what you get if your post goes through and then you try to submit an identical post within five minutes. Flood control prevents you from making dissimilar posts within 10 seconds of each other. Doubleposts happen when two (or more) posts get submitted essentially simultaneously (which seems to only happen when you click submit multiple times AND the server is lagging).

Okay, it's installed and set for 10 seconds.

Posts anywhere, posts within same thread?
I sometimes draft three posts at once, then send them all.

Just posts in the same thread.
