View Full Version : Quote hack bug
Crumb

I thought the quote hack would be great for quoting multiple people in the same post, but I have found its achilles heal. If I select and hit 'Q' from one user's post, and then select and hit 'Q' for anothers I get both quotes attributed to the first user.
In the example below Gurdur wrote the first line, but vm wrote the second.
I hereby nominate Crumb ?
I'll look into whether it's possible right now.
Is this a 'feature'?

Um... That's not what happens when I use it. That's exactly the point of the hack which is actually called the QR Multiquote hack. Let me see if I can duplicate the bug.
Crumb
04-16-2005, 05:41 PM
Well I thought it worked for me in the past too. But I definitely just got that problem.
Maybe it is my browsers problem?
livius drusus
04-16-2005, 05:42 PM
Can you duplicate it? I tried those exact same quotes and it worked normally.
Crumb

:roflmao:
The bug was in my own bloody head! I was pressing the wrong 'Q'! haha, I just pressed whichever one was handy. Sorry for wasting your time, liv.

I tried this about five times in that thread to be sure that I was really having the problem. Every time I hit the wrong 'Q' and not once did I notice this. I need to debug my brain. :brains:

I can confirm that it works with Firefox 1.0.2+ and MSIE 6.0.2+, but that's it.
Are you saying Quick Reply isn't working for you at all, or the multiquote feature?

Wait! There's a multi-quote hack? That is the coolest thing ever! How does it work?

I swear I announced and/or explained this somewhere, but can't find it now.
You know how you click on this guy --> http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/images/freethought/buttons/quickreply.gif to jump down to the quick reply box below? Well...
If you highlight some text in a post before you click that button, then that text will appear (surrounded by quote tags properly attributing it) in the quick reply box below.
But it gets better!
Then, you can highlight some text in another post, and click the button in that post, and the second block of text will appear (surrounded by quote tags properly attributing it) in the quick reply box below the first block of text!
And you can keep doing that as many times as you want, so you can more easily reply to little bits of each persons' posts in a thread.
It's really quite something to behold. :)

No, it doensn't work for me. When I highlight text and then hit Q (the correct Q, I confirmed it), no text appears in the quick-reply box.

Hmm... you might have to do a hard refresh or clear your cache (however you do that in Safari). Do you have problems with any other Javascript? Do the drop-down menus (Member Options, etc.) in the navigation bar at the top of the forum work for you?
Ensign Steve
04-21-2005, 01:43 AM
Nope, no other Java probs. I'll try the hard refresh. I am certain Cep's HTML thread is not looking on mine the way it is supposed to, but that's a different animal entirely.

Yeah sorry, I don't even know where to begin problem-solving for Safari, since I don't have a Mac.

Well, I've worked around it this long, on this board and many others. But now that I know the option is out there and I just can't use it, well, I feel a little empty inside. Thanks anyway, though. I know if you had it in your power to fix it, it'd be the first thing you'd do, vm.

Multiquote hack -- or single quick reply quotes -- not working properly in mozilla 1.4.2. Nothing gets pasted, and the quick reply box is in fact never disabled.
Which, come to think of it, is nice. I can post a quick reply without being forced to quote somebody :P

In order for multiquote to work we had to shut off the click on post in order to QR requirement. I was sad to see it go, myself, because it ensured that threads in threaded and hybrid mode would still make some semblance of sense.
As for the rest of the multiquote issues, I shall now do my traditional :tiptoe:.

Crap. I have Mozilla installed, I'll take a look at that.

That's a known 'bug'. The Multiquote hack won't work unless the Quick Reply box is permanently enabled.

Ok this time a REAL bug. (I think.)
Sometimes when I highlight text in a post and hit the little Q it takes me to the normal reply window as if I hit the quote button. It did this when I tried to quote just the last line from the OP in this thread. (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2580)
I assume this is not how it is supposed to work.

That's a known bug, Crumb. Has to do with the apostrophe in Ymir's Blood's name. The little Q button will never work properly on his posts. I'm waiting for the person who wrote the hack to respond to my request for a fix. :yup:
Crumb

Ok, thanks vm. :cheerful:
I am now using Opera 7.54. I still get nothing when I highlight text and hit Q, just the empty q-r box. Ooh - I have firefox installed too. Please hold, my problem is important to you.

Just curious, but are all the people who can't get the Multiquote hack to work "lefties" (user info on left hand side), becuase I just tried to switch to left and found that the hack doesn't work there. Is this a known bug?

Good call, Crumb! :1thumbup:
It should work for lefties now. Or rather, it shouldn't not work for lefties simply because they're lefties.
It still won't work on Ymir's posts and it might have other problems.

Try ctrl-F5 to clear the cache of the javascript, then try again.
Ensign Steve
05-05-2005, 08:56 PM
Was that for me? It didn't work, but also it didn't appear to do anything when I pushed Ctrl-F5. Maybe that's not the right shortcut for me. I'll look around for how to clear the javascript cache.
viscousmemories
05-05-2005, 08:57 PM
Oh, right. Safari. Sorry, yeah however you clear your browser's cache, that was for you.
Also, do you use the WYSIWYG editor? 'Cause I've just found out that Multiquote doesn't work with that editor. It's a known bug and not likely to be fixed by the hack author.
Ensign Steve
05-05-2005, 08:59 PM
No, I don't use that editor. Clearing the cache didn't help either. No biggie, though.

I've just tested Multiquote on Firefox, Maxthon, IE and Opera. It didn't work on Opera, but it worked flawlessly on all the others. Is it possible you're just expecting it to work in some way that it's not designed to work? :chin:

I'm expecting to work like: I select some text (in the regular thread view, leftie or topper), click the small Q button, and have quoted text appear in the quickreplybox. I get nothing, just the cursor. Are my expectations wrong?

I randomly tried the Q just now ... and it worked! :yay:

Cool! Welcome to the club, Joe.
Doesn't work in Opera 8, but you mentioned that already. It's a shame because I find Opera much more to my liking that Firefox (doubtless firefox could be tweaked and extended to do what I want but I don't see why I should spend the time...)

I posted the hack install instructions in there. It should be easier for you to see the difference that way.
Anyway I thought you were a Maxthon man. What happened to that?
I was always an Opera man, but at work for a long time it could not get through the proxy servers (stupid microsoft proprietary authentication), and nor could firefox. Now they can ... but this is as likely to be a configuration cockup at work as new support of the authentication protocol by opera or ff.
Because maxthon is simply a shell around IE it worked, and I got tabbed browsing. I am currently in phase of using all 3 by turns and deciding which I like best.
