I love checking out listing pictures, especially of historical properties or unique (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22977) and brilliant (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23626) builds. I've posted a couple of them before, but now that we have a jewelry porn thread, I figure it's time the real estate got a porn thread of its own.
http://www.freethought-forum.com/livius/nsh1.jpgToday's fapspiration is this Art Deco gem (http://www.dng.ie/search_detailed_result.cfm?ID=10061639&pos=1) in Templeogue, south Dublin. Not only does it have an awesome crenelated parapet that manages to be both badass and not at all faux-castle kitchy, but it has marble mosaic floors, original hardwood window casings and doors in awesome Art Deco geometric style, and a personal favorite of mine: curved walls. It needs some updates, some decorator love, but that only adds to its appeal for me.
The best part, though, is that this lovely suburban villa was used as a frikkin NAZI SAFE HOUSE during World War II. It belonged to a man whose father was German, and SS officer Hermann Görtz stayed there after parachuting into Ireland in 1940 to enlist the aid of IRA collaborators in the planned invasion of Britain. :headasplode:
Asking price is €1.25million, or approximate $1.76 million.

Step out and get yourself a 'Château Fort'. Six towers and a keep, originally built by a Cardinal nephew of an Avignon pope with the permission of an English king. It was gifted to his nephews. It was 'renovated' in the 1830s by Viollet-le-Duc and his assistant and appointed with the finest of France. Original family owners since 1306. The downside is its considered a bit of a white elephant ever since in inheritance along the way, it was separated from the surrounding vineyards. Still, I don't think they're selling.

Although they advertise a 'monument historique privé', I didn't have to use it, so I didn't see how big it was, nor how historic. I'm betting users had to flush twice....'do-overs', y'know.
Of course, every time they mentioned the 'nephews' I would snort and mutter, 'Yeah....riiiiight'.

Plus, who doesn't want a home where they can say "I think I'll take a walk around the parapet."? NOBODY, that's who.

My wife grew up close to that house - she said she walked past it every day. Templeogue / Rathfarnham is the more fancy area of Dublin. I bet that place used to be valued at twice that amount and is still dropping.

And now because any real estate porn thrad would be a joke without one, here is a Frank Lloyd Wright house (http://www.bairdwarner.com/real-estate/il/riverside/07656963.cfm?guiSearchID=AGENT15a5a432-feca-4b1b-9d16-e7a73d59a52f&sortBy=PriceDesc&pageSize=20¤tPage=1). It's not just any old one, though. It's Coonley House, built in Riverside, IL, (just outside of Chicago) in 1912, which Wright himself deemed his best house. It's on a beautiful property with a pond and an acre of land, and the house has been renovated superbly. All the systems have been updated, the bathrooms and kitchen redone with so they're gorgeous and sleek but still in keeping with the period and style of the home. Even the landscaping was restored according to the original plans.
It was in restoring the Wright architectural elements that the current owners showed their respect for the home and Wright. Original tile floors were brought back to former glory when the owner cleaned them by hand. Wright cabinets were sometimes moved but preserved and restored. The 28 ft mural in the Living Room was recreated by artisans from a small piece that had not been destroyed. All home restoration was researched from color to texture to authentic historic detail.
I've surfed a lot of FLW pr0n. This is the best I've ever seen, by far. If I had $2,890,000 lying around, I'd show up with a titanium valise packed full of it and claim her as my own. Hell, I'd gladly pack an extra few hundred thous just so ensure the owners threw in the furniture too because I seriously would not change a single thing about this house.

I loved that about Acapulco. The weather was all tropical, so nobody had carpet, they had stone tile floors, and nobody had AC, so we would open all the windows and turn on the ceiling fans and hang out in the "shade" of the indoors warm but not sweltering. So much more pleasant than frigid AC on your skin constantly, for a week anyway. One dude had a hammock in his living room, for christsake!

I concur with my esteemed colleague, that place also looks like every newly constructed, newly minted millionaire farm near where my dad lives. I can't find a picture of the one they just built (I think it's still in construction, a year later), but it looks down on this massive horse barn.

The Virginia mansion is quite a nice house. They did a good job with the finishes, I like the dark wood clad library. It's a little grand staircasey, cold marbly for my tastes, and my preference is for actual rather than reproduction, but it ain't bad.
There's a show on Disney, Good Luck Charlie, and the family lives in a restored Craftsman in Denver. The "house" (http://entersubmit.com/are-you-hooked/the-duncans%E2%80%99-denver-home-on-disney%E2%80%99s-%E2%80%9Cgood-luck-charlie%E2%80%9D), is awesome in every corner. Another insane mansion (I don't know that it qualifies as a McMansion) is here (http://www.visualtour.com/applets/flashviewer2/viewer.asp?t=1635633&sk=1). The interior decorator's taste is.. questionable, but it's a nifty place - conservatory, big staircases, lots of woodwork, gray/green brick exterior, lakefront.
(If I were to buy a home, it'd be one like this (http://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/1025-Spyglass-Way_Knoxville_TN_37922_M83133-14092?source=a20964).)

Manhattan real estate is so weird. You have a 10 million dollar triplex townhouse with a 15 x 30-foot pool taking up pretty much the entire living room then you have a kitchen that could fit in a shoebox? It's actually wedged in that spot under the stairs where broom closets usually go. That's insane. I dig the pool, don't get me wrong, but priorities, people, sheesh.
Also protip: don't border your living room swimming pool with antiques.
Second protip: don't wear 6 inch wedge heels to teeter around the edge of said living room swimming pool.

It doesn't give any specifics about the kitchen finishes. All it says is the appliances are built-in (duh) and that there's a pantry (woohoo!). I love this house (http://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/28-Old-Chestnut-Hill-Rd_East-Hampton_CT_06424_M30022-20493). It's a historic Cape Cod, beautifully restored, secluded without being isolated, a great size -- compact but not crowded -- on a huge lot (9.31 acres). There's even an adorable matching little fort type thing perched over the pond. At $300,000 it's incredibly affordable, not often the case in Connecticut. It's also just a short jaunt down the road from where my parents live.

The Oaks, circa 1845 (http://www.historicproperties.com/detail.asp?detail_key=scgre005)
Happel, Wadsworth, Stickney and Bohlen families have made this their home. 14-foot ceilings, heart pine floors, original marble mantels, approx. 5,200 sq ft, 5 bedrooms, 3 baths. Detached garage, swimming pool, 225x600 ft lot with azaleas, camellias and dogwoods among the oaks
165K
Unbelievable
ETA: Looks like The Oaks was dropped from 225K, here are some great pics (http://www.landsofalabama.com/alabama/index.cfm?detail=&inv_id=966982&source=oodle). I want to decorate that front parlor with the staircase for Christmas.
Why the hell do the prices have to be low NOW, when I can't possibly hope to sell this house, buy another, or move, or even consider moving?

I went visiting with Kiddo today, and it's one of those kid friendships that are cool because we like the parents a lot.
Anyway she was showing me the house (70's ranch, so pretty blah), and I noted they had a true master suite with a sitting room and bathroom separated by a wall and door from the bed area. I walk into the bed chamber expecting a big closet around the corner and it's a full kitchen! WTF? Yeah, it was built as a mother in law apartment, it just surprised the shit out of me in such an otherwise unremarkable home.
They're going to combine it with the existing bathroom to make a truly awesome master bath and dressing room.
The reason this is porn is I love renovating.

Former Jones Memorial Library, circa 1906
434 Rivermont Avenue
Circa 1906 former Jones Memorial Library. Over 17,000 interior square feet. Designed by the local architectural firm of Frye & Chesterman. Located in the Rivermont Historic District near Historic Downtown Lynchburg, Virginia. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The building is constructed in the Neo-Classical Revival Style. The steps, terraces, and porches were designed by the Boston landscape architect Bremer Pond and were added in 1924. A three-story wing was built on the rear (east) elevation in 1968. Panoramic views of Downtown Lynchburg. Parking permitted along the street; rear parking garage for 3 cars; additional space for future parking lot on corner of Rivermont and Victoria. The two-story portico extends across the facade of the building and contains a frieze that bears the inscription oratory, history, discovery, science, and poetry.
But still, just wall off the town and become a hermit. It would be worth it.

No, keep it intact! I'm bummed when lofty spaces meant to host groups of people get subdivided into a few dozen 2 bed-2 baths.
{snip pics}
We just got back from seeing this house. We drove by and hung around like stalkers oohing and aahing at it. It looks even better in person than it does in pictures. It's in the middle of the woods but still just a mile or so from the main cross streets of East Hampton where my parents got married in the Congregationalist church. There's a creek that runs along the edge of the property which my parents, still in recovery from their week of no power thanks to Irene, immediately thought of as a good source of water in an emergency.

Laurent House in Rockford, Illinois, was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for Kenneth Laurent, a World War II veteran who was wounded in action and confined to a wheelchair. Wright designed it in an oval shape with wide curving hallways and rooms so it's entirely wheelchair accessible. All the furnishings and built-ins were custom-built by Wright.
8137 8138 8139 8140
The Laurents have lived there since it was built 59 years ago and have kept it in immaculate condition. They're moving to a retirement community, however, so they have to sell the house (http://www.gambinorealtors.com/agents/details.cfm?mlsNumber=61609&cr=1&first=1&last=5&lpp=5&dv=1322613977040). If it doesn't sell soon, it will be put up for auction on December 15. The current price is $875,000. The auction minimum bid will be something less than half a million.
A conservation group is desperately trying to raise the money to buy it (http://www.rrstar.com/go/x1568359827/Group-raising-money-to-buy-local-Frank-Lloyd-Wright-house?photo=1) and make it a museum.

I am experiencing a wanderlust attack, so have been looking at job openings with hubby's company (which is multinational and 185 years old). I have never heard of some of the towns and stuff where the jobs are, so check out real estate rentals in the areas, just for fun.
Today I saw a 5 bedroom guest house in the town center being rented as a single family home, and now I can't find it. But, it's in Galashiels Scotland, which I never heard of until today.

My neighborhood is doing its home tour and someone put together a youtube peek at the houses for this year. It is a collection of gorgeous old homes, a new green home, and a home that has been a recent success story of renovation.
The house at :45 sec was an absolute wreck a year ago. Caving in roof, plywood for doors and windows, it had been subdivided into a duplex and left abandoned by a land lord for over four years as an eyesore. Contra said a hundred times that they would have to condemn it and tear it down. It and the property next door were both bought and saved by families that really did an amazing job. They are two of the prettiest houses on the block now.
