View Full Version : Star Trek Fandom: Nerd or Mainstream?

Resolved: Enjoying Star Trek fiction--strictly TOS and TNG and movies based thereon--doesn't make one a nerd. It means one is a fan of a mainstream franchise.

Note that writing/enjoying/taking seriously fan fiction/art/wanking based on the Star Trek franchise does constitute nerdery and is not what this question is about.

Also, all that post-TNG Star Trek stuff is right out!

Okay?

Ready.

I voted for Number One (lol right?) but I'm actually not sure if it really is still mainstream. It used to be, but these days I dunno.

Non-nerds are probably "Wasn't that 40 years ago? Then they had one in the 80s?" I accept that TOS & TNG are mainstream; DS9 and VOY probably less so. I don't watch ENT, so

Calling them TOS and TNG etc. is very nerdy.

I think we need a thread to hash out the definition of nerd and whether or not it is different than geek.

I agree with everything in the OP.

I don't get the DS9 hate.

I don't think it's hate. I think it's saying that DS9-fandom is not mainstream.

Calling them TOS and TNG etc. is very nerdy.

A nerd is someone who is boring but not trying to be. A geek is someone who is trying to impress people with how boring they are.

Also, if you are a nerd, I will probably inform you directly, which is the only sure way to know.

Hey that story about "Baby It's Cold Outside" was not boring. IT WAS FASCINATING. EFFORTLESSLY FASCINATING.

Despite Lisarea's professed expertise and the poll results thus far, Mrs. KA has assured me quadrillions of times that Star Trek is NERDs NERDS NERDINGTON NERDARAMAVILLE.

In these heyah pahts, she is the absolute Iron arbiter of all-such categorizations. :mememe:

I don't get the DS9 hate.

It's actually my favorite series. I haven't seen much DS9 hate, at least compared to Janeway hate (a quick perusal of TVtropes will confirm this).

Calling them TOS and TNG etc. is very nerdy.

Lazy, actually.

This one time, at band camp, I went on a canoe trip,......

I found a sign today that said, "Put a Skull on it" and thought of you Ymir.
