My husband just bought Netscape internet service, and he is currently waiting for the software (including the dialer software) to arrive in the mail (5-7 business days). We are desperate to find anybody who can spare him an account (one that works on any old dialer, like the windows one) long enough for him to download what he needs to begin his service. He tried the library, but can't do it because of firewall issues. If anyone can help us out, can you PM me with the info please?

What OS is he running? Does he have an Netscape email addy and pw yet? Assuming he's using Windows, all he needs is a local number and his account info to dial-up.

Two words: Webcafe. Wait, that's one word. Also check any nearby college or university, they tend to have a few scattered public computers. Whatever you do, don't pop in that AOL CD, however tempting it looks. You'll be paying them for years of "free 6 months" that you never used.

liv, he uses Windows, and we did attempt to use the OS's dialer in case it let it, but no. Netscape is one of those cheapo ones like NetZero or People PC that force you to use their dialer (probably for some nefarious purposes, but we scoped out the Terms and didn't find anything out of the ordinary). He was able to establish a connection using his username and password, but he wasn't able to go anywhere. He just gets 404s and timeouts. He used IP addresses instead of URLs, and he manually entered a friend's DNS server. He tried on non-windows programs like zmud and Trillian, but no luck. Netscape Dialer is not to be subverted by our crude tactics, unfortunately.

When I got NetZero I just drove down to Radio Shack and picked up a CD. Doesn't netscape have there CDs availible at the local computer or electronics store?

LOL Just to reinforce this point, I've got friends who are still paying for AOL's "free trial" years later because AOL refuses to stop billing them -- cancelling an account is nearly impossible. Don't sign up. Don't sign up. You'll regret it.
What AOL's doing is criminal and they know it but they're hurting for money very badly, and know full well that people using their "free trials" don't have the resources to seek legal compensation.

Sorry for your friends, but I've done it lots of times without any problems.
Anywho, last I heard he was going over to his cousin's house with a thumb drive, so maybe I'll see him on when he gets off work.. Here's hoping! :)
