I don't mean from a bomb being dropped on it or anything; I mean from the sap building up so much pressure that it explodes from the inside out. I didn't even know such a thing could happened, but apparently the decline of New England's maple syrup industry has led to record numbers of deaths and injuries due to exploding trees.
Crank up the volume and listen to this NPR story (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4571982). It's eerie and sad.

verrry interesting. A very sad tale indeed.

However, there are several minute clues which lead me to believe that this is in fact an elaborate hoax!
One, clearly labeled on the header for the link you offered are the words, "April Fool's"
Two, the picture on the linked page has been poorly photoshopped to show flames in the background. The light that such a conflagration would emit is not observable in the foreground.
Obviously the butler did it.

Ja, the link to other popular NPR hoaxes (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4568853) was a clue, too.

Ahhh, the sweet sinful sap was a major contributor to the decline of Puritanism. Excellent!
Bring on the godless pancakes, sister! :pancake:

Just a few years ago it was cows exploding because they hadn't been milked due to cuts in farm price supports.

Least. Convincing. New England. Accents. Ever.

Yes, seriously, several times I have personally heard a tree explode because of sap exploding --- one was a lightning strike, the other several were in big bushfires in Australia (certain eucalyptus are really bad for that, because not only of sap but of the oils they build up).

Several years ago, a couple of bolts of lightening (which we almost never have here) hit two huge pines that were planted by the CCC during the 30s in a regional park near here.
It was absolutely amazing what happened to the trees - they were reduced to splinters in an instant. I mean, the particles of wood in the piles I saw the next day were all no larger than toothpicks. The trees were shattered to about four feet from the ground, as I remember. I looked for signs of burning, but saw nothing.
Lucky it happened at night when the park was closed or I'm sure people (the survivors that is) would be still picking wood out of their butts.
