View Full Version : Man finds two-headed snake
http://www.ananova.com/images/web/257675.jpg
A Chinese man who found a two-headed snake at his home is raising it as his pet.
The man, called Yang, discovered the unusual reptile in a discarded bag in his yard in Zhenyang town, Henan province.
He has decided to raise the snake in a washbasin in his family home.
Both the two heads are well-developed, and each have eyes and a mouth.
The snake, bearing red and black rings, is more than half a metre long, and as thick as an adult's thumb.

No kidding. I wonder if the heads take turns or compete for mice or something.

Just an experiment. I know this is off topic, but how does one post pictures within a reply?

If you mean embed a picture in the way Legs did in the OP, you put the url between tags. This FAQ entry (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/misc.php?do=bbcode#imgcode) might be helpful to you. :)

If the photo is hosted on the net... just click the http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/images/freethought/editor/insertimage.gif icon and paste the photo address into the box that pops up... click ok and you are off to the races...

How many times must we go over this before you'll get over yourself?

That's unfair, y'all. He posted that 6 hours ago. I checked the times, this blatant threat was well after he posted his image-link thread. If he goes around picking fights, he'll get what he's looking for.

Sure it was after he posted the thread, but it was long before you ever posted in it so your "how many times must we go over this" comment doesn't apply. Besides, if that's picking a fight, then the bar has been lowered far more than I ever imagined possible.

Boh. You'd have to ask him. I can't say I found it particularly threatening. Looks more like trying to make a rhetorical point to me, but perhaps Legs felt differently.
In any case, even if he were on the verge of alerting the authorities to this breach most foul, it would still fall pretty low on my internet fight scale. Maybe I'm just jaded, but it seems to me the IIDB admins would have more reason to feel randomly assaulted for no discernible reason than anyone else in this thread.

It may not have been particularly threatening in effectuality, but it was certainly a threat meant, and what I find inexplicable about TomJoe's behaviour is that it was so childish, so petty, such a small issue in this thread for him to get so worked up over.

Unfortunately, the picture isn't too good, so it's difficult to tell for sure, but it appears to be a member of the genus Rhabdophis, probably Rhabdophis tigrinus -- commonly known as the Yamakagashi, Japanese Garter Snake, or Tiger Keelback. If it is a yamakagashi, Yang might want to be careful feeding it, as they're mildly venomous.
When two-headed animals have been observed while feeding, since each head has an independently-functioning brain the two heads generally do compete with each other for food.
Cheers,
Michael

Is there a dominant head, Micheal, do you know? Do they fight at all? I find it very hard to grok exactly how this poor fellow (these poor fellows?) is going to go about the business of living.
The Lone Ranger

As far as I know, in such cases there's no particular tendency for one head to be dominant. I've read of cases in which the two heads would both grab at food items and engage in a fierce tug-of-war over their food, often ripping it apart in the process.
I've read of cases in which two-headed animals did, in fact, suffer from the condition, because the two heads would compete so fiercely for food that they had trouble feeding themselves. Such a condition is rare enough in the first place, so it's not surprising that you rarely encounter such animals in the wild. I wouldn't imagine that a two-headed animal would be likely to survive for very long in the wild. (Suppose a predator appears and the two heads disagree over which direction to flee?)
By the way, if it is a yamakagashi, Yang should be careful not to annoy it. I did some checking: they're apparently very docile snakes that rarely bite even when provoked, but there have been recorded instances of people dying from their bites.
Cheers,
Michael
