View Full Version : Help with screen shots
I have a new computer and suddenly I cannot do screen shots anymore.
I used to be able to just hit print screen then open an image program and paste it in... but now it says it can't recognize the file extension.
Can any of you brainy/geeky types give me a hand?
Until the brainy guys come along, I'll admit to being confused. There shouldn't be any file extensions involved. It should just be a clipboard object with an image format.
What image program are you using and what paste action? PSP for example has several different ways you can paste.
:brainwave: :lightbulb: I don't think the print screen is happening. The image program is trying to paste whatever was on the clipboard before, and it happened to be a file. Have you tried pressing Shift or Ctrl or Fn, if you have that key, before the PrtSc?

The Fn key was my first thought, too, Joe. Legs, did you by any chance go from a desktop to a laptop?
(Joe, do a search. You know we have idea guys here. :idea2:  )
No not a lap top.. just a new PC
I tried shift print screen and ctrl print screen and nada - says the same thing
'unable to import the clipboard. Adobe photo deluxe does not recognize the file extension'

In that case I would suggest you download Meazure (http://www.cthing.com/Downloads.asp). It's a great little program I got after ceptimus recommended it in a couple of threads.

Does it say that when hitting print-screen, or when trying to paste? If it's the former, it sounds like adobe photo has messed things badly.

:paperbag:
I refer you also to the reply I am composing in another thread
What happens if you try and paint in other image pgms? You must at least have ms paint. Or word.

no, it's when I go to the photo program - there is an immediate alert box
Thanks Joe - it works fine with Paint...

[edit] Argh, I should read more carefully :D Seems to be working!
Are you playing with me, legs?
Anyone, you've isolated the problem to adobe photo deluxe. I think I got it bundled with a scanner and found it pretty unstable. Go get another.
Are you playing with me, legs?
Not at all.. I have never in my life used Paint for anything... but it opens the screen shot fine... thanks, I owe you a million!

Heh. The last few days, I've been wondering how do do a screen shot in Linux (redhat 8). Seems to me there was a program you could run, but I couldn't remember the name. Searched the man pages. Google searches turned up, well, screenshots, but not the method of making them. Now I read this thread.... Huh. "Print Screen" key, eh? What's that? Oh... wow. That was easy.
Doing a "ps" I see it's "gnome-panel-screenshot" that's running. Damn these newfangled linux distros, they never bother to write man pages anymore. -- exactly a prime complaint I have with Windows. Back in the day you could go fishing through /usr/bin and for every program in there, there was a man page to tell you what it was for, how it worked, etc. That's how I learned tons of stuff. No longer.

No longer. Boy do I feel your pain. The GNU software foundation has declared UNIX manpages to be "outdated" and thus no longer relevant, so there's a constant pitched battle between the manpage-users and people-who-think-manpages-are-evil-ers. You might as well declare ASCII text to be "outdated", it's not going to stop people from using it. GNU has it's own "info" browser but it's terrible and hard to navigate, and some html-based 'wman' program which plain and simple doesn't work. Some GNU manpages even have the temerity to just point me to a URL for "more up to date information", nevermind that I want information on the version I have installed, not their latest and greatest version they've got in their HTML whackadooie.
A more standards-compliant program would be xsnap (ftp://ftp.ac-grenoble.fr/ge/Xutils/), a program of excellent vintage, originating well back in the late 80's. And yes, it has a manpage.

I'm really mad that "grabber" on mac can't capture the screen if the DVD player is running. Stupid intellectional property assholes, how do they know I don't own the rights to the DVD! :glare: And my PC doesn't have a DVD player. :pout:
Now that Legs' problem is solved (and I don't have to worry about a derail), anybody know a good DVD ripping type software for mac?

[scameron@localhost scameron]$ man -k snap
sane-snapscan (5) - SANE backend for AGFA SnapScan flatbed scanners
[scameron@localhost scameron]$ xsnap
bash: xsnap: command not found
[scameron@localhost scameron]$
Yeah I tried "info" as well, and like you, I hate "info" Well, I suppose only emacs users can like "info," and I am a "vi" person through and through. It's a shame when you have to resort to running "strings" on a binary to find out what the fucking command line options are.

Well, you're probably going to want to install it first. :P The link to the souce ain't just for show.Well, I suppose only emacs users can like "info," and I am a "vi" person through and through.
