View Full Version : Clarification on Smiley Naming

In the past day two people have thought or feared that I name or keyword smilies to maliciously taunt or mock members. One of those people approached me and I was able to link to the post where I announced the keywording several months ago, thereby explaining how it was not offensive in context but rather a gesture of playful appreciation.
I apologized for the misunderstanding, but now someone else has made an off-hand reference to me indulging in contemptuous smiley naming, so I'm beginning to worry that this is more than a one-off misunderstanding.
Let me nip this ugly weed in the bud: I do not, have not, would not, will not ever use a smiley to get in a dig at somebody or for any other nefarious, cruel, vindictive, or generally evil purpose.
Whenever I keyword or name a smiley I always announce it publically, either in the thread that inspired it or in the New Smilies Alert thread. If anyone feels that I have slighted them or belittled them by my choice, or even if you just don't like it much, please contact me and I will instantly correct my error in public, private or however you prefer.
If you find a smiley named for another member in a manner you find inappropriate, please contact me as well. Perhaps I can explain the context to your satisfaction, and perhaps I'll find that the member was never a fan but didn't wish to make an issue of it at the time.
Smilies are meant to be fun. If they suck for you in any way, let me know. :)

I like my smilies just fine, thank you. I'm flattered, in fact.
I have a request for clarification. On the smiley search mechanism... how many terms can you cross reference for each smiley? Do you have a limit, or can you multiply the search terms, depending upon how many terms might apply to any given smiley?
If so, are you open to our suggesting alternate search terms for some smilies?

There is no limit that I know of, godfry. One of the problems I have cross-referencing is that I hard time picking the most obvious and useful synonyms, and then remembering them so same kinds have the exact same keywords. I really should go over the whole hoard and formalize the keywording.

I have no problems with either the beyelzan or gradian smilies. It amuses me to no end that there are both a dancing dick and a commie in my honor.

Liv,
Could you do a smiley for Crumb? Like one that smiles and turns into crumbs or a smiley throwing crumbs on the ground for the birds? Unless something is already created that I'm not aware of....

Or possibly smiley with a wand standing in front of a pile of crumbs, waves the wand and the pile of crumbs becomes a rooster, aka:cock!

How are you popping in and out of threads so quickly? Is there some kind of trick I need to know about?

Sheesh... I don't know what your problem is. I'd say most messages are sprinkled with crumbs... Y'now... little specks. Little specks that occasionally stack on each other:
This whole board is lousy with crumbs.
They're everywhere. Ubiquitous, even.
No...no...no... DAWGNAMIT! Get 'em offa me!
ARRRRRRRGGGGHHH!!!

The Naming of Smilies is no simple matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a smilie has THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First, there’s the tag that the members use daily,
Such as :conga:,, :bigglomp: or :flames:
Such as :woohoo: or :D,: or :curtsey: -
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as :runaway:, :tongueincheek:: or :iron-e-meter:
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a smilie needs hovertext particular,
Text that's peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can it keep up its tail perpendicular,
Or spread out its whiskers, or cherish its pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a mass,
Such as “Bouncing girl”, “Blue blush”, perhaps “Thankee kindly”,
Such as “I love bubbles”, or even “Whupass” -
Names that only belong to one smilie.
But above and beyond there's still one name left over,
And that is the keyword string you never will guess;
The string that no user research can discover -
But LIVIUS HERSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a smilie in deep meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
Its mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of its name:
Its ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name.

I don't. And here I was all impressed at your artistic brilliance... :shakehed
I am artistically brilliant. Just not so much in this thread.
It's The Naming of Cats (http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/lion/75/name.html) from TS Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Possum's_Book_of_Practical_Cats).

Actually I shouldn't have said that. Adapting it for smilies was brilliant. :yup:
