View Full Version : I think I am being watched.

I noticed a while ago that a lot of the ads in my Yahoo! mailbox are geared toward military types. Instead of "find your high-school classmates" I get "find friends from your old station" or ads about VA loans or MGI Bill or something. Some of them are a bit misguided, though, like they are trying to get me to enlist, but they are still military related. It makes me wonder if they are smart-ads generated from the content of my emails or the email addresses I talk to or something.

Now I am getting ads for Apple and Macintosh products, like the new OS which I mean to upgrade to, I am just being lazy.

So I wonder, am I being watched? Or is it just acausal synchronicity or priming or what?

I'm skeered! :sadcheer:

Edited to clarify: I don't mean spam emails I receive in my inbox, I mean the full-color, animated (Flash?) ads that appear pasted onto my actual yahoo mailbox screen because I use the free mail service.

You wouldn't by any chance have used Yahoo to search about military and Apple things? Do you use My Yahoo?

I do all my searching on google. I have a my yahoo account, but I can't remember the last time I used it for anything. However, my yahoo email address is the one I used when I bought my mac, and also some uniform items, so I got confirmation emails from those organizations.

Does that mean "caught out"? As in "red handed"?

A lot of the spam ads I get and pop up ads - well I have nixed those, but still get spam - are related to anti depressant medication, which can't be a coinicidence. I presume somehow information has been relayed to some advertiser that I spend time on a depression website and also have in the past done a lot of research on various anti depressants.

If I was to go by what the spam in my email said: I need Viagra to get it up for young teen nymphos and local women hot for my bod, and I need to refinance my home mortgage to finance the Viagra purchase. I must also be in high demand to help rich West African widows transfer their money out of the country.

Thank you for that, warren. Whatever it was. :sarclap:

But I'm not talking about spam ads. :P

(no offense to moose, who was at least on topic ;) )

I didn't think I was far off topic, the ads I get seemed to be tailored and limited to pretty much those things, some are popups or imbedded flash ads (home mortgage refinancing and Tulsa women that want to fuck me), some aren't, I just lumped them altogether for amusement purposes. I know other people that get all kinds of other ads tailored to their interests, so I figure the ones I get must be somehow tailored to mine. The Tulsa women that apparently want to sleep with me ads are popups or imbedded ads that must somehow be tied to my IP location or something. I know of nobody else in my group of coworkers and acquaintances get Nigerian scam letters. I figure once I sign up for AARP membership, I'll be getting a double dose of Viagra ads as well as motorhome and retirement village ads in email and popups.

Besides, you don't own this thread. You can't stop me from posting, you can only put me on ignore. I wouldn't blame you if you did.

Yahoo is pretty bad; they admit to targeting members who sign up with them. If you go into your "account" feature and scroll around, there's a place you can click that takes you off the mass emailing stuff. Otherwise, they just send ads, etc. to you based on where you've been in cyber space.
