After my brother told me about Google Maps (maps.google.com), I quit going to Expedia and Mapquest because I think Google is better for my purposes (which is generally getting directions from point A to point B).
But even cooler, they've recently added Satellite maps!
And I'm not talking about some lame-ass 20 year old black and white maps like the old Terraserver website had. I'm talking about full color, hi res images that are zoomable and draggable just like the regular maps! Just find a location on the map, zoom in as close as you want to be, then click "Satellite" in the upper right-hand corner and voila! Very cool. :yup:

No way. You totally heard of it from my screenshot. (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?p=65205&postcount=1) Credit where it's due, vm! :P
It's cool, though, you are right. I love satellite maps almost as much as I love maps! :)

S'cool!
Our house, shop and two barns are right in the center with the long straight gravel driveway. (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=sapulpa,+oklahoma&ll=36.072278,-96.103388&spn=0.005461,0.007918&t=k&hl=en)

You may also wish to try out NASA's free software that allows zooming on any place, and uses satellite photos.
It's called World Wind (http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/ )
(Warning - 180MB download :damn: but worth it, if you have broadband)

The satellite doesn't work in my area, I guess because of the trees.

Why did you mark out the letters "Google" beside your driveway? :?

Here's my spot. (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Gresham,+Oregon&ll=45.494996,-122.459289&spn=0.007617,0.007156&t=k&hl=en) I live in the apartment building south of the main road, right by the entrance, parallel with the road. Great view, eh? If you zoom out a little further you can see there is a lot of green space around, though. :)
I haven't worked out how to make a link to the map, but if you click 'map' on the page you linked ... you're not on it.

Just get whatever view you want and then right click "link to this page" and copy the link.
but if you click 'map' on the page you linked ... you're not on it.
That's 'cause I am sneaky. :tiptoe:
Anyway, I'm here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=-26.059570,27.916260&spn=2.631226,3.933105&t=k&hl=en - and that's the maximum zoom :sadcheer:
The slightly greener area in the middle is Johannesburg. I think I can just make out the ring road. The prominent ridge to the north (range of 3 ridges) is the Magaliesberg, and Farren lives just south of there (or used to ... he was talking about moving to the east of Joburg for his new job).

Why did you mark out the letters "Google" beside your driveway? :?The question "Why?" is self-evident. How I did it is a better question. I trained the horses to eat grass in a pattern that spelled out "Google" just so I could easily spot my place just in case they ever came up with a program with satellite mapping.
Did you notice the house is in the trees? And my secret underground lair isn't visible at all.

Google Maps just got cooler. In addition to "map" and "satellite" mode, they've added "hybrid" mode. Now you can see major street names, etc. overlayed on the satellite image.

I was reading this thread thinking about how many times I’ve used online maps and ended up in some really rough areas. The maps are usually quite accurate but they can take you through some “tough” parts of town. I guess the technology tries to find the quickest most efficient route possible not taking into account that you don’t want to get shot or stabbed on the way to your destination.

Is that you in the blue shirt, Joshua?
I know what you mean, HighOn. I've thought that about the GPS. There should be a "safest" route option in addition to the shortest, scenic, and quickest.

Is that you in the blue shirt, Joshua? Can't be, as the satellite only shows things that are out of doors.
