Ah, Dismal Swamp

I was looking at an Army base I used to be stationed at (Ft. Lee, Virginia) on Google maps, and came across the amusingly named "Dismal Swamp State Park" in North Carolina. Apparently it is so named because they're building it near the Dismal Swamp Canal (http://www.albemarle-nc.com/camden/history/canal.htm), a 22 mile long canal dug completely by slaves' hands, between North Carolina and Virginia. Just thought this was an interesting bit of historical trivia.

I've always loved the name. Never been there, though have traveled just south of the swamp on the way to the coast.

I've always heard it called the Great Dismal Swamp. It's actually quite beautiful, if a little bit buggy. I haven't been in a few years, I should go.
