View Full Version : Help name our house

So, down here people name both their boats and their houses, for example the rental cottage we are in is part of a property called "Blind Faith", and my folks house is called "Sunsets and Vines". Yeah it's corny, but I like the idea so am gonna go full cheese ahead.
Anyway, we wanted something with the idea of going with the flow, or floating with the current kinda thing, and decided we want the word "Adrift" in there since it goes with the nautical community here. So, we need an adverb or adjective or to make it a part of a phrase....cuz just Adrift by itself don't sound right . Any ideas?
Adrift in the Space-Time Continuum (H2G2 mangled reference)
Borrowers Adrift (again, a random association; I don't know if you've come across the Borrowers series of children's books)
Thought Adrift - Belief Adrift - something that could mean "freethinkers"
Vegans Adrift
I like this challenge. Don't think I've got a great answer yet though.
Beachwood Adrift? Tranquil Adrift? Sirens Adrift? Leisure Adrift?
Hard to come up with a decent combination.

My first thought was that 'adrift' implies haphazard and aimless, but the dictionary says it also means just floating freely. I did not know that.
Hmm...
Can't help with the naming.
Lose the 'A' and make it

If you know Brit house names, you'll know names like Dunroamin and so on:
I suggest therefore Dunflamin ? Dunpostin ?

Honestly, I agree with this. That is why it is so hard to think of a name. It is considerred bad luck to give a negative name for the house. The tradition is that it casts a negative energy over the house. That your household would always be adrift.

Not just a Southern Idea. We live above the Mason Dixon line and named our house "double happiness" (which is a chinese concept and character).
As for your place, is there some aspect of the home or the property it sits upon, or near, that could be used in the name? For example, if there are lots of pine trees, you could call it "drifting pines", etc...

Unlike LadyShea who obviously has a life and hasn't got back here to comment on the suggestions. Brandi, we need feedback! We are adrift!

Sorry guys, was out on the boat all weekend!
I love some of these ideas, and am compiling them to go over with Frankie. Thanks so much for the creativity!

Yeah... We non-southerners started calling our place "Ravenswood" because is was one of the names used for development plats when it was surveyed over 100 years ago. It doesn't mean squat (although there are lots of crows that live in the small stands of Douglas firs that anchor every city block in the neighborhood), but we liked it an it sure looks and sounds dandy in invitations like that for The 14th Somewhat Annual Ravenswood Invitational Half-Court Croquet Tournament. Toney, huh?
How about "Sin"? As in "livin' in Sin?"

Okay, we love many of these, but we really like Lunachick's idea of Adream Adrift. Gives the free floating feeling we were looking for, and I like the alliteration.
We got a good laugh out of "Quality Shed".
We don't consider adrift a negative term, it was exactly what we were looking for, as Crumb so aptly stated (which would make a great "subtitle" to the house name) "Not all who wander are lost" :)
