What are we all up to this fine whitsun weekend? (and what IS whitsun whilst we're on the subject??). I have a multitude of siblings and respective partners turning up soon; dunno what we're gonna do though. I am not feeling terribly sociable .. maybe I will just skulk in my room and ignore them. (and hopefully won't get dragged to any of these.... :club: )

This is a holiday weekend in the USA, Monday is the official Memorial Day, a day set aside to remember those that have died in war. It is known as Decoration Day, many people go out to decorate the graves of veterans. Many others commemorate all their dead relatives. However, most Merkins just think of it as the official start of summer, a weekend for picnics, campouts, watersports, etc.

Myself, it's just another weekend where I get paid for not working and paid extra for when I do. Monday is the paid holiday, I get paid 8 hours pay whether I work or not. In addition, I work from 5:30 PM to midnight on Monday, getting paid double-time for Holiday Worked. I'm on Easy Street now.

Memorial day?! Weird, that's in November here :). It's a holiday here too but all I know is that it's Whitsun, which I think is some sort of religious thing.

Veterans Day is in November here, but that is supposed to be for remembering war veterans that are still alive. However, that is when they do the whole Tomb of the Unknown Soldier bit, so I suppose we actually have two holidays for the same thing. How about one for wars we didn't get into? Where is that one?

That was last Tuesday. You musta missed it.

Whitsun is a contraction of White Sunday, which is always the seventh sunday after Easter Sunday. Whit Sunday commemorates the coming of the Holy Spirit in the form of flames to the disciples, as recorded in the New Testament.

So some religious nutters smoked some bad shit a couple of thousand years ago, and as a result we get a day off work. Makes yer think doesn't it? :chin:

I'll be here, wondering as always how it happened.

MooseIBe

Shame they didn't smoke their bad shit for a full week, really ;).

Okay I have a question. Why is Whitsun always on the same day of the year when Easter and the ascension day vary? That seems stoopid to me.

It makes it easier on the Holy Spirit to book in advance. Otherwise there might be scheduling conflicts what with all the virgin visiting and zoo trips.

Don't you guys usually get Sunday off of work anyway?

I get a four-day weekend, again, yay! Somehow wherever I'm stationed, all the Monday holidays mean we get Friday off as well. Usually the command does something like a safety fair or fitness day or picnic. This time the decided just to leave us alone, hooray!

So, what are you going to do with it?

Ensign Steve

Who me? I am going to do my absolutely favorite thing in the world.

Sleep for 18 hours at a time, and spend the rest of the time playing on the computer and eating and drinking and smoking cigarettes.

God bless America.

I'm gonna stay off the fukken roads this weekend. Already, the highways to the beaches are crowded. I'm staying home and puttering in my garden. If the weather holds, I'll marinate some chicken and throw it on the BBQ. Sanctify the day with burnt offerings.

:BBQ: <-----grillmaster, where are you?

We just got our hardwood floors redone....so wife and I will spend this three day weekend being busy vaccuuming, dusting, moving and getting high off of the polyurethane fumes...actually, more like getting a first class headache. Not fun, but the floor looks great. I plan to park my butt in front of the computer playing BFV, WWII mod the rest of the time...

My main mission this weekend is to see Revenge o' the Sith. The Grand Order of Geekish Nerds has reduced me in rank 3 positions for not seeing it at 12:01am on opening day, and 1 position for not going to the aforementioned opening dressed as Darth _______ (fill in the blank with Sith of your choice).

Speaking of which, according to the news, apparently two fellow Geeks decided to play Star Wars lightsabers by filling two flourescent light bulbs with gasoline and lighting them.....hmmm...remember the good ol days, when you had to actually be smart to be a nerd/geek???

:fishie: schedule for this weekend:
Saturday
stop by annual pool party of a coworker
college best friend coming up to celebrate my bday (She's offered to help with household and yard projects. :muahaha: but I think it's just 'cuz she wants to play with my new gas powered wheeled mega weed whacker. I'm hoping to convince her she doesn't need to take me out to dinner; we can stay at my place, sippin' tequila and soaking in the jacuzzi.)

Sunday
stop by another friend's (a different coworker's wife) to wish her a happy bday.

Monday
a group of the doberman rescue folks are picking me up and we are visiting our friend (yet another coworker) who just bought 20 acres for her 25 dogs and their sanctuary.

A barbeque sounds nice! Shame it's raining here or I might try that :(

Don't think I am going to bother with ROTS myself :(

It's lovely and sunny here Moose - very windy though.

Today I am pottering about in the garden, playing on the computer and later maybe having a barbecue.

Dunno what I'm doing tomorrow and Monday. My parents are threatening to come over at some point.

Just nice to have some time off work which has been ridiculously busy lately.

It's always sunny in the South!! My brother and his fiancee just came up yesterday and they said it was 33 degrees when they left Surrey. And here it's grey and rainy, grr.

I miss the South :(

Well I split with my ex and couldn't afford to live down there by myself .. rent's are too fucking high. So now I am back oop North with my parents, sigh.

Leesifer
05-28-2005, 11:26 AM
Sorry to hear that!

I know the rent down here is very expensive - especially compared with what you can get for the same money or less ooop North.

Perhaps we'll win the roll over lotto jackpot tonight. :crossed:

I would just like to note that I think "pottering" is a really adorable Englishism, and I thought that long before Harry and his friends came into my life.

Dammit, this thread's title gets me every time! On first glance it looks like, "Be quiet in here, wot wot?"

That's really an admonition that doesn't need to made, eh. Damn you people for going out and getting lives! :shakefist:

Ensign Steve

Well, I spent Friday doing the eating, drinking, netting, smoking thing and I am bored of it! Here is my revised To Do list for the weekend:

watch Revenge (and possibly hop theaters to Madagascar).
grocery shop
clean carpets
laundry
go to Sears and buy new tires

lesse how many of those things actually get done.

Ensign Steve
05-28-2005, 11:00 PM
Damn, y'all! What did you get a life? I even posted in some high-tension threads just to have something to do, but alas they go ignored. I am too worried about my car to go driving off to the movies, and I'm too much of a procrastinator to work on my carpet and whatnot.

*sigh*

I am bored!

That's what you get for going through your Star Trek DVDs too quickly.

Ensign Steve

Quiet you.

Enterprise, season one, should be out soon. Too bad I'm broke. FYI, y'all, my birthday is 24 June. :yup:

Carrying on the "what ya doing this weekend" theme - I've just mowed the lawn. I now have loads of little cuts on my legs, 'cos the strimmer is a violent machine. :mowlawn:

Just about to open a small bottle of Stella and sit and read the Sunday paper.

MooseIBe
05-29-2005, 03:10 PM
Oooooh that sounds fun :). The sun has actually got out a little bit here which is kinda cool. I could just fancy sitting in the garden with a cold beer and something good to read...

toodle pip, Leesifer!!

Change of plan!

I've now been charged with chopping down three conifers at the front of our house.

Off to get my pruning saw. Luckily they're not too big! About 5' tall.

Poor Stella will have to wait.

MooseIBe
05-29-2005, 03:19 PM
I would have had the stella FIRST .. it would make it so much more exciting to be using big sharp tools..

Leesifer
05-29-2005, 03:38 PM
How bloody quick am I? Three trees all chopped down. Now I just need to get some root killer to paint on the stumps.

They weren't that big at all really - now I can have my Stella!
