View Full Version : Smileytext Replacement Time!

Okay kids, it's that special time when vm queries the database and replaces some freaky smileytext with reasonable, normal smileytext. Just because we wanted to start out small and manageable, this is the first round of replacements, with the new text in the left column and the smiley in the right:

Does anybody have any pet peeves or anything they desperately wish to change? If so now's the time to pipe up.
Once the deed is done, we'll know it worked if the smilies are on the left and the freak text on the right.

I do have one small pet peeve, I'd like to see the smiley text placed in the ALT attribute of the smiley image. That way QR will pick up the smileys and if I'm curious as to what smileytext was used for a particular smiley it's a simple matter of copy/paste.

That's brilliant, Zikes. I had no idea it would be so easy to solve that QR problem; we've been bugged by that for a long time. And if you're using Firefox you can right click on a smilie and view 'properties' and the alternate text shows there. Awesome. :)
I've tested it on my local server and it works, but I have to check something before I upload it. Thanks!

Question: What happens to the old posts that have the old text? Are they broken or do they still point to the correct smilie?
test:
ETA: Yay! The old text still works. :wriggle:
livius drusus
05-29-2005, 07:09 PM
That's what the find and replace is actually for: to update the db so that any instance of the old name is replaced with the new. Of course after the query is run, the old text won't work anymore going forward.

Ohhhhhh... okay.

That means in your op, there'll be two smilies, not freak text on the right ...?
livius drusus

Oh yeah!
Unless you go and edit it quickly after the globalreplace...

In case anyone missed the earlier discussions about this, the idea is that there are numerous standard verbs (such as hug, slap, cry, etc.) for which there is no correlated smilie name (smilietext). For example the smilietext for a hug is currently  not  which makes it hard to guess without using the search pop-up.
So we are going to change the smilietext for the above mentioned smilies to those more intuitive names, and then run a database query to ensure that the changed name doesn't break any of the previous uses of those smilies.
If you think there are any other verbs (or nouns, really) that are or would be common enough to warrant changing, post your suggestions here.

witcharc works after I stop seeing it as wit-char-c and wonder what that would do to a null-terminated string.

Lead balloon. Not animated. Could be improved?
Looks good! I like how he's all frowny, that wouldn't have occurred to me. One suggestion, tho. What if you turned the face sideways, so it looks like the balloon landed on its side, as balloons sometimes do when they are on the floor? Then you could still see the knot and really tell it was a balloon. What do you think?
... and he raises a little cloud of dust when he hits. :D

Smileytext is the characters that get converted into a smiley. So  is the smileytext for the the popcorn eating graphic.
Before this thread, a lot of the smileytext was hard to remember, with lots of random numbers, foreign languages, underscores and such. There are still some weirdness left over -- mainly in the flag category -- but on the whole, the hoard is much more logically texted now.
Ensign Steve

I can understand the general purpose of rationalizing smilietexts, but the two columns ... I don't get it, how that works. And ... are you really getting totally rid of yoda? :( and the balloon? :(
:yoda: :balloon:

#1371
livius drusus
10-05-2007, 05:24 PM
The two columns used to be different, the one on the left was the "before", the one on the right the "after". Once I changed the smileytext, vm ran a database query that replaced all instances of the original text with the new text. If he hadn't, there would be lots of broken smilies in old posts, and I couldn't stand that.
So after the query ran, all the texts in the "before" column changed to the new text.
Keep in mind this was a long time ago, maddog. The yoda and balloon we used to have were not the ones we have now. I was talking about replacing the originals with the :yoda: and :balloon: you know and love, which, as you see, I've done.

I intentionally left the end : off that one just 'cause it's a very common shortcut, like :) or :D.

Ohio's flag is the only one that's shaped like this. :oh:

I suppose that's what Ohio gets for having such a goofy looking flag.
My favorite is Maryland. :md: It reminds me of Medieval Times. The restaurant, not the time period. Also South Carolina's is neat and has a kewl history. :sc:
