Women are so often expected to be the height of primped - shaved legs, manicured and painted nails, styled hair, flawless make-up, trendy clothes, alluring fragrance... Do you, men out there, have any idea how long it takes for us, women, to get ready, and how much money it all costs? Mmm... Ok, so maybe you do. :tongueincheek:

Well, has the time come for all men to bump up the aesthetic bar a notch, or two, and become metrosexuals? :tongueincheek:

Oh, but what exactly is metrosexual? Basically, he’s is an urban male who embodies vanity in a positive way; generally he keeps up on the latest fashions, he waxes and trims, and has manicures. He never has a hair out of place. He goes to the gym everyday and freely spends money on his aesthetics and lifestyle. And, perish the thought of shampoo and hair gel, the metrosexual male only uses "products" on his fine locks! :tongueincheek:

I guess a lot of people say - it's just a fad. A catch phrase being exploited by the media. At the end of the last century it was the Nirvana inspired 'grunge' - unkempt, lanky looking hair and rugged unshaven faces. I loved Kurt Cobain's music, but jeez, couldn't he have used a razor and a comb? :yup:

So is this just a passing thing or is the metrosexual the new man of the millennium?

Upon giving the matter a lot of thought—I’m noting more, and more, men's facial products appearing on my favourite skin care counter. While older males are still content with the cheap buzz and cut, there are more men at my unisex salon having their hair 'styled'. :yup:

Remember the now deceased danseur Rudolph Nureyev? (Metrosexual men out there will know exactly who I'm talking about.) I read a biography about him a while back. Countless women fell in love and lust with this man. "He spoilt me for all other men," one lamented. Some people might have accused him of being effeminate he was, after all, just so totally in touch with his 'feminine side', but perhaps he was just ahead of his time –the original metrosexual man! :yup:

But what's this new breed of man like in the sack? That's what women want to know, isn't it? There's got to be more to a metrosexual man than just his appearance. Is he more aware of his woman's needs? Does he mind sleeping on 'the wet spot'? Does he say: "Oh, that's fine, I don’t mind, we can make love another time if you're feeling tried tonight."? And, I wonder does he ever fall asleep immediately after sex! :tongueincheek:

Our culture is changing and our sexuality is not questioned as closely as it once was. It's ok that he wants be as attractive for you as you are for him. Preening (and pink shirts) will no longer automatically slap him with 'gay' tag. He likes to look good, and yet he's still not about to let his ego to rule his life. Oh, yes, Sir-ee! He's likeable, liberated, and loving it! :yup:

But - wait just a modern minute. Amazing as all this might seem, according to a recent survey, only one in five women actually want a metrosexual man! It would seem that most women still want their men to be just as nature intended them to be—sex driven, testosterone pumped animals who can be ready for night on the town in the same time it takes, us, women to decided what we’re going to wear! And you know what? I have to be totally honest here, I'm one of these women. I’ll take my rugged and rough around the edges man any day over a metrosexual—and especially at night!

Oh yeah definately. Give me rough and gritty and oh so sexy. Mmmm. There's nothing wrong with looking after your appearance, but no need to spend more time than I do on it.

Besides, every space dedicated to males, leaves less space for female products. :yup:

As a dyed-in-the-wool plaid wearing bearded granola barbarian, I thank you.

:godfry:

And, yes, I know who Nureyev was. so there

And... I know who Baryshnikov is, too. so there double

Should I even bother asking for this "recent survey" and hope it was outside of Cosmo or Ralph...?

"Meterosexuality" is a term that's been bastardised into non-meaning by capitalism. Originally it referred to inner-city (ie- "metro") well-paid CEO types who were the most self-indulgent, egotistical bastards you could imagine, who spent as much money on themselves as their car, and picked up because, quite obviously, women go for you if you look after yourself.

There was absolutely nothing positive about the term, and it was often used as a derogatory insult.

It is just a passing fad. It hasn't made any real impact on gender relations, because it's just a veneer - a product, haha - marketed by the companies selling shampoo or gel or aftershave or men's fucking skin-toner.

There will always be men who are the height of class and fashion in this world. The Cary Grants, if you will. But they're more than meterosexuals, because they go beyond the veneer into what truly is class. Pretending to have class or meterosexuality by dressing a certain way is just as pathetic as real meterosexuality itself.

Good to hear, and no way am I sleeping on the wet spot.

Fragrance is OK, but otherwise I prefer my women natural.
No silicone implants, please, no or little make-up, and I find artificial fingernails ghastly, and shaving usually unnecessary.
Just me,

Perhaps she knows him by his real name: Archibald Leach.

Can't say I've ever seen any of his movies, but then he did die twenty years ago. I guess they must have been good, since you seem very impressed by him.

Maybe he was just before my time?

Yeah, cos nobody ever watches movies made before they were born. There's like, a law against it, or something.

No, but some people just choose not to watch older films.

There's a large number of men that fall somewhere in between this metrosexual image and the Kurt Cobains of the world. I'd like to think I'm one of them ... erring more on the Cobain end of the spectrum, perhaps.

My hairstyle doesn't justify using "products" -- just gimme some shampoo to keep it clean. I am not hideously unkempt, although I no longer shave everyday (one reason I'm glad to be out of the military) -- usually about 3x/week is plenty for me.

I tend to dress more for comfort than fashion, although I don't wear as many t-shirts as I used to (credit the wife for that). When I need to look good, I do. I just refuse to go through that much effort on a daily basis. I keep myself clean, smelling nice (to my wife anyway, and she's what matters to me), and dressed nicely (nothing ripped or with holes, anyway). That said, if the situation demands it, I'm not afraid of getting dirty either, and I'll dress appropriately for such times.

Balls-on accurate, to use a technical term.

Alex, rent His Girl Friday, The Philadelphia Story, Arsenic and Old Lace, and North by Northwest, in that order. I promise you won't regret it on a pure movie fun level, and Grant's astonishingly hot elegance will only underscore how far off the mark so-called metrosexuals actually are.

And then go for Bringing Up Baby, just for laughs. I love that movie. He's all geeked up, but he still can't shake off that charmingness.

I have a view somewhat inbetween. The sculpted hair, should be a slim ball from the 80's look is very creepy. But I see guys all the time who I don't think own a comb and I wonder how they can go out in public looking like that.
Grunge is in a different category, it takes some work to look grunge, as it isn't just unkept but a specific unkept.

Yes I know how much money, etc it takes my friend is a hairstylist, and I know all about "products" including a mini frothing at the mouth everytime a hair color comercial says, "get rid of those roots" or "Color those roots" or anything to do with roots. (It's outgrowth, roots are the little bulb things in your scalp that you can't see until you pull your hair out).

I guess I need to get in more, and have some tv. :D

don't like the term because it objectifies individuals and attaches some sort of sexuality to what was in the past simply character traits.
