I've just finished Karen Armstrong's Holy War: The Crusades and Their Impact on Today's World Anchor Books, New York, 1988.
I highly recommend. Food for thought. Good overview of the fluctuations of fundamentalism and expression of holy war amongst and between the peoples of the Abrahamic religions. Nice development of some interesting individual characters along the way, from the calling of the First Crusade by Pope Urban II to the assassination of Anwar Sadat.
A lot of great fodder for discussions with the likes of Albert Cipriani.
