Y'know about those "false dawns" that come a few hours too early and either make you all annoyed because it's getting light or make you all introspective because it's a testament to the indomitable going-forward power of time? (Note: no other reactions have been present in anyone in the world when seeing a false dawn.)
(Ever.)

Well, I just learned about them from the Astronomy Picture of the Day (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html) for today, August 25 2004 (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap040825.html). You'll have to check the page itself for the picture, because it's two jpgs (one has labelled constellations)

Isn't it sorta awe-inspiring?

It is. And beautiful, to boot. I had never even heard the expression "false dawn" although I suspect I've noticed the phenomenon. I wonder where that picture was taken. There sure are a lot of stars in that town. :yup:

APOD is one of my favourite internet sites. There's some stunning stuff there.

Absolutely gorgeous, Chiron. I liked moving my mouse over the pic and seeing all the constellations spelled out for me. I've been known to surf the APOD archives for hours at a time. It is a cave of wonders.

Supernovae explosions are perhaps the most beautiful thing to ever witness.

Or the birth of my daughter, whenever that happens.
*sigh*

Ah yes, the lovely and feline Cat's Eye nebula. She's a stunnah.
