I have "Three Little Maids" from the Mikado stuck in my head.

This is a Booming Prairie chicken:

This is the largest Booming Prairie chicken in the world:

I want two Booming Prairie chickens: a boy and a girl so I can hear him boom when the season is upon him.

the largest one is so large it didn't come out...

Took me a second looking at the first one to work out which its head end was ;)

We got to follow a pod of dolphins up the river the other day. They bring the babies up where it's safe to teach them to hunt. The adults would sometimes suddenly flip backwards out of the water to catch the mullets as they jumped, trying to get away from 8 dolphins I assume.

We got it on video, but don't have a computer with a firewire port so can't use our video editing software. That sucks.

I keep getting the song Little Savage injected into my brain, but I know howcome that's happening.

What I don't understand is howcome I keep hearing Donovan alla time. I just heard I think Atlantis a few days ago, then yesterday, Mellow Yellow, and now for some reason, there is some kind of "Wear Your Love Like Heaven" marathon on the radio. We're on the second version now.

Oh. OK. That wasn't a marathon. They just played two versions of it, and now they're playing a different song.

But still: What's with the Donovan? Is God sending me a message? And if so, what is it? Donovan Rules?

Pwned by Donovan and not even trying to hide your shame. It's like someone cut down the mightiest tree in the forest with a herring.

Alright. I'm going to confess to something now. A bad, bad something. It's not just "Three Little Maids" that I have stuck in my head; it's the version sung by TC and Rick in geisha drag on that episode of Magnum, PI where Higgins directed a production of The Mikado on Robin Master's estate.

Where is the largest prairie chicken on earth? That is the most important question here.

What the fuck are you bitches babbling about?

Who or What is a Donovan? Who or What is "Three Little Maids"?

You speak truth. The largest prairie chicken on earth is in Rothsay, Minnesota, the Prairie Chicken Capital of Minnesota.

That'll teach those rednecks to stay away from the water.

Oh. My. God. I'm seriously getting goose bumps. Gorgeous. Gorgeous. Beautiful. Wonderful. That's where Aegeus saw the black sails and dove to his death. Gorgeous. Oh man, I'm going to cry.

I took hundreds of photographs when I was stationed in Germany, but I've only held on to about 12-15 for some reason. Probably because for a long time after I got out I just wanted to wipe the memory out of my mind. Anyway, here are two of the ones I saved. I just don't feel like putting them in the gallery, so I'm putting them on this here thread. Sue me.

The first is a group of German kids that came to hang around with me when I was doing a field exercise outside their village. Michael (third from the left sitting on the truck) had a black lab named Alf, but oddly the dog didn't make it into the picture. These kids loved MRE's so much they would trade a half rotisserie chicken and a Coke from a place in town for one. I obliged happily. I still have Michael's grade school English lesson notebook - his English was fine; he was trying to teach me German.

My commander scolded me for taking my helmet off to wrestle around with these kids because I was required to stay in uniform on these important missions. Nevermind that as a fuel truck driver my sole responsibility in a training exercise was to fuel the track vehicles every few days... ah well.

The second picture is my co-worker standing on top of my truck during yet another exercise. We didn't have one of them newfangled pump meters on our trucks, so the only way to gauge how much fuel we had was to get up there and stick a measuring stick in the tank.

Those kids look like they're having a blast making you disobey orders, and holy crap I can't believe it but camo really works! I seriously couldn't see the dude on the truck for ages.

Those are air sacs. The boy chickens inflate them when they boom 'cause it makes the girl chickens horny. Don't act like you don't get why, either.

I was going to tell y'all about the time I saw Donovan perform live, until Skep posted that incredible picture of the moon.

Some people I know raise goats & chickens, and when I was at their house one day I fell in love with their bottle fed baby goat. I wanted to bring her home with me until I realized that I smelled like goat for at least an hour after I cuddled with her.

My mom took me with her to the WTTW (Chicago's PBS) studio to see him because no one else would go. It was Donvan, John Sebastion and someone named Dave Bromberg (https://www.wttwdigitalarchives.com/interface.php). One of them was a surprise guest, but I can't remember which one (it was 1974, dammit!)

I can't believe I actually found archived footage.

ETA: apparently I can't link directly to the archive page, but if you type "Donovan" into the keyword search bar you'll get clips.

Holy shit, I saw Donovan play at the Auckland Town Hall, like back in about 1980 or something. He had this great big cushion that he sat cross-legged on, and some of those long, curly toed Persian slippers like Genies wear. And scarves! So many scarves! They made him look all mellow yellow and he smiled love and sunbeams at everyone and we smoked pot and grinned back at him and it was a beautiful thing man. Even if it was 20 years too late for that sorta thing.

...they call me mellow yellow, yeah
they call me mellow yellow, that's right...

Great song to sing to kids suffering from jaundice. Really lifts them up in all their buttery-yellow beautifulness, y'know.

I can't ever hear "Three Little Maids" anymore without thinking of that episode of Frasier when Buzz the sports guy kept prank calling Frasier's show and got him to sing it on the air. Kelsey Gramer has such a great singing voice, especially in falsetto.

I can tell you how well camo works. Just imagine hordes of dipshit AIT students jumping out in front of your moving vehicle at predawn when you've got the Georgia humidity fogging up your windows. Idiots!
