Does anyone here get a daily newspaper delivered? I think my Mom always has, but since I've never had it at my own house it never occurred to me how it piles up. I guess the landlord here subscribes or something, so we get a paper every day. We now have a huge pile of unread newspapers. Am I missing something? Is there anything of use to me in there that I can't find a better version of here on the 'net?

They are, in fact, good for lining the bottom of the bird cage.

We get the NY Times every day. I spend most of my work day at the computer, so I don't really need to spend even more time looking at a monitor to read the news.

When the weather is nice I can sit on the front porch in the morning with a cup of coffee and the paper. The paper is easily transported from room to room and doesn't require any additional electricity to run. A physical paper has a great random access interface and the pop-up blocker is built-in. It's multi-media content is low, but that's OK. I can always put some music on while in browse. The crossword puzzle is also much easier to do on paper.

Being able to share the parts of a newspaper with your partner/family is also a great bonding experience. I have many fond memories of my family sitting around the Sunday newspaper swapping sections and discussing what was happening in the world.

Reading newspapers is, for me, like reading books. You can get the same information on-line, but you lose the physicality (read sensualness) of the medium which makes the experience more real.

pesci: :D

dlanod: That was a really great post. You've definitely given me a sense of (and appreciation for) 'newspaper' I didn't previously have. Thanks. :)

And wait. The NY Times crossword? *shudder* I'm lucky if I can get 5 words on it. Well okay that was 10 years ago, but that's how bad it was: I haven't tried again.

The trick with the NY Times crossword puzzles is to do only the Monday and Tuesday puzzles for a really long time. They are infinitely easier then the ones later in the week. Once you get comfortable with those you will find that the puzzles for the rest of the week become easier. I'm not saying easy, just easier. You will also find that there are clues and words that are used over and over. For my money the hardest is Saturday's puzzle. I rarely solve it completely.
