I am a fairly recent raw-oyster convert. I found the mere idea disgusting for a long time, but a couple years ago my oldest friend forced me to consume a half-dozen Pacific Kumamotos, and lo, mah eyes were opened!

I just got back from New Orleans, where I had the chance to eat almost enough oysters. But I'm not fooling myself; there are never really enough oysters.

Are there any other oyster enthusiasts in the house? Shall we start a flame war over whether Chincoteagues or Gulf blue points are better? What, if anything, do you like on/with your oysters?

Oysters be good. That is all.

I've actually only eaten oysters once. Some kind of slightly effervescent champagney dressing was involved and they were delicious. I could pretend I knew which kind they were and duke it out with you, if you'd like.

I once ate, like, $50 worth of oysters at a sitting. I was having dinner with some friends, and I started eating oysters at the bar, and decided I didn't want anything else because I was cranky and the oysters were making me feel better. This is worse: It was happy hour, so they were two for one or something. That was probably about enough oysters.

Anyway, yeah. I always like oysters, but I think that was the day I liked them the most.

I don't know what else to say about them, though.

I've never tried them when I was sober, but I suppose I would. Hmmm, they're probably good with hot sauce.

Hmmm, they're probably good with hot sauce. That's for sure. I would say Tabasco is traditional ... maybe we could start a flame (:faint: pun not intentional) war over this too.

I don't think Tabasco does anything for oysters. I like a really horseradish-intensive cocktail sauce, myself.

I've never tried them and always thought they must be revolting. What do they taste like?

exotic food, an ugly clam with a slimy interior of guts. i'd take snails over oysters.

There are two kinds of people in the world: those who love oysters, and those who are too chicken to try them.
What do they taste like?
Not fishy at all. Briny, but not salty; they taste kind of like the ocean smells. Also they are slippery, not slimy. Gulf oysters are very slightly bitter, Pacific oysters tend to have a sharper, more metallic flavor and firmer flesh, Atlantic oysters taste the most "ocean-y" (at least in my experience.)

They are delicious, and you can eat a whole lot of them without getting full. Also they are very good for you.

Aren't you supposed to swallow them without chewing? :)

Only if you're oyster-phobic and eating them to prove how tough you are. I always chew; they're too good not to savor.

Now as far as chewing them, I'd have to be highly intoxicated......

Never tried oysters, but love shellfish in general (cockles, mussels, winkles etc), being brought up in a Yorkshire fishing village - (Staithes - Google it, you'll probably see our old house). But Whelks are disgusting. And rollmops. I'll definitely try oysters one day though.

To be honest I had to Google “Whelks” to find out what they are. No, sir, not for me…….I’ll stick to shrimp, crabs and lobster thank you.

That's adorable, liv.

I've eaten oysters, but found them rubbery, slimy slippery and flavorless. But I'm willing to try again.

Man I hate shellfish .. mussels, cockles, winkles ... yuck yuck. I can understand people having eaten these things when protein was scarce and they were a good source of it, but not now ...

Incidentally, oysters used to be very much a poor person's food.
