I hope I’m not duplicating a past thread with a similar topic. I looked a little and didn’t see one so, here goes. Presently, my girlfriend I have two cats (Maine-coon and a ?), an iguana and four Ecuadorian hermit crabs. Here is a list of the pets I’ve personally owned in the past (not including family pets when I was a kid in my parent’s house): Dogs 2 (wolf/German Shepard, German Shepard), Snakes 15 (6 ball (royal) pythons, 1 reticulated python, 1 black racer, 5 garter snakes, 1 whip snake, 1 corn snake), Red African fire skink, Ornate box turtle, Mouse, Crayfish and a few dozen aquarium fish (always fresh water).

Sara is gorgeous! I had several of the teeny iguanas when I was in jr. high. I loved the contemplative pose they adopted: very zen. But, boy, they could move surprisingly fast when they wanted!
Your cats make excellent couch ends -- it's nice when pets match the decor of the room. (just kidding!)
If you ever get pics of the hermit crabs (are hermit crabs as shy as their name suggests?) please post here. Or post here AND in the Members Gallery (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/gallery/browseimages.php?c=3&userid=)

We have two ferrets.
Guinness (aka boofhead) a male sable, he is totally cute and can sit on his hind legs. We found out couple of weeks ago he has cancer and has a lumpy neck. But he is happy and boingy so its the best we can hope for.
Demi (aka evil white worm) a female albino, who i'm sure is sucking out our life force and will live forever. Can climb the back of the fridge and is just generally evil but cute but evil.
Grew up with many pets, Blue Cattle Dogs, horses, cows, chooks, cats, birds.....
Would love a dog but we both work full time and are out alot so it wouldn't be fair to the dog.

I have two fat orange goldfish called Fred and George. I really need to put some more water in their tank. It's only about half-full and it leaks so I have to put a bucket under it.

It's about time I had a few pictures of them. I'll post them soon. Actually hermit crabs are quite gregarious. They generally huddle together during the day as they hide under something (they're nocturnal). At other times when they’re cruising around the tank there is often more than just one of them. They travel in pairs a lot. From what I read, it’s actually supposed to be unhealthy if you have just one hermit crab. It’s the ultimate misnomer.

We have three cats; Greystoke, Maya, and Hermes. Hermes is a kitten we got for our roommate Rah. Our other cats, Bacchus and Yojimbo, died over the last year. Greystoke's about 15, and I will be absolutely miserable when he dies. He is also the weirdest cat I have ever known, and there is serious talk of saving up to clone him.

Just three weeks ago, which would make her ten weeks old. One of my irresponsible friends didn't spay his cat and I got first pick of a litter of 5. She was the only one with that fluffy hair, the rest had regular shorthair cat hair.

Seahorses are very, very difficult to keep. They're extremely sensitive to changes in temperature and ph and stuff. Even huge, established aquariums have a hard time keeping them alive. (I once considered setting up a seahorse tank, but a friend who worked at the Monterey Bay aquarium warned me off the idea with a great deal of strong language.)
The New Orleans Aquarium has the best seahorse exhibit I've ever seen. They have all kids of seahorses and pipefish and even leafy sea dragons, which are about the most unlikely creatures on the planet. They look like elderly drag queens with scoliosis.
I've never considered having as a pet, well, until now. How long do they live for?
Fay & Fred lived the longest... about a year... Sarah & Diana died after just a few weeks...
After they are dead though, you just sit them on a paper towel and let them dry out. They are odorless and perfectly preserved, you can hang them on the christmas tree!

We have 2 dogs-- Peaches who is now 10 and is a cocker mix, Kess who is 3, a border collie.
We now have 3 horses instead of 4. You will be happy to know that we found Ace a new home and he left the ranch last monday. He has gone to a family with young teenagers learning to ride. We are pleased, but Roxanne and I have been very sad. (Warren on the other hand is going Woo-Hoo, one down 3 to go!) Howie has been having a difficult time of it as well, but seem to be coming around. He and Ace were best buds. Then there is Angel and BJ. BJ has shed off his foal hair and is a good looking boy, we are amazed at how much he grows everyday. September the 10th BJ will be 5 months old and we will start weaning him from Angel. It is going to be an experience I am sure.

I saw a great tank of them at the Seattle Aquarium (which is a must see if you find yourself in Seattle) and I was blown away. They blend in amazingly well floating around among the sea weed. I was mesmerized by them and the tank of jelly fish. Only the Sea Otters took up more of my time there. :jellyfish: :cheerful: :otter: (too bad this is a river otter. :P )

I got Nissa as an adult, so having a kitten is a new experience for me. I have to lock her out of my bedroom while I sleep and I have scratches all over my legs. Zoom zoom zoom! I think Nissa likes having an energetic playmate, though, and when she gets tired of being harassed she can always retreat to the top of the kitchen cabinets; the kitten can't jump that high yet.

I'm probably one of the only people on the planet who prefers adult cats to kittens. I mean, I love 'em and they are cute, but I fretted about everything while Mojave was teeny, especially whether she would get hurt, even though it was clear early on the dog would never do anything intentionally.

They're incredible. I first saw them at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, CA (a terrific aquarium, BTW.) I remember staring at the tank for a few minutes wondering where the animals were, because all I saw was kelp. Then I realized that some of the kelp had eyes, and I about lost my shit. They were so, so beautiful and dignified; I ended up watching them for the better part of an hour. (It bears mentioning that I was under the influence of a quantity of psilocybin at the time.)

You're not alone; I much prefer adult cats myself. Kittens get into things, they're so step-onable, they make a hell of a racket at night and that housebreaking thing is never quite as streamlined as it's supposed to be. Besides I don't think they start getting real personalities until they're about six months old; before that they're pretty much Generic Kitten. Bucky is growing out of his Generic Kitten phase, but at four months he's still a colossal pain in the ass. (I mean colossal literally. He weighs almost seven pounds. :afraid: When we took him in to get neutered the vet thought he was at least six months old until she got a look at his teeth.)

I own two cats, brother and sister. Will dig out some photos ... some time when I feel I have time. But, while the sister is a fairly stereotypical aloof cat, the brother is anything but. Will pause to talk to you while licking his bum, one leg in the air, and most of all loves to relax is exactly the position of pesci's dog in that pic.

I like watching how other animals deal with a youngster.
I'm experiencing this at the moment. I picked up another puppy, Maximilian, a GSD-mix with black/tan/white coloring. He's too small to be anything but an ankle-biter which doesn't bother me given I haven't been wearing shorts lately. However, he enjoys latching onto Casey's (2yo GSD) back legs. Mostly Casey ignores it, or mouths him a little bit ... enough to get him soggy but she hasn't chomped down seriously ... except for once.
Casey was trying to eat, and Max just wouldn't leave her alone. He kept biting her back legs and she tried warning him off a couple of times ... but he kept biting her. She lunged around, fur flew and clamped right down on his head ... pinning him to the ground. She released him almost immediately, but he had that sort of shell-shocked/stunned look that people have when they've just been sucker-punched or something ... and he stayed like that for a couple of seconds. Then he looked at me, and just started whining ... it was funny. It was sort of a "Oh gee, look ... if I cry I'll get some sympathy." gimmick ... but it worked. I picked him up and played with him for a bit.
Of course, this morning ... Max was back to biting Casey ... guess he's going to learn the hard way.

I got two near-black kittens a week ago; Inca and Maya are 13 weeks old today. They are pretty hard to tell apart at a distance, but it hardly matters.
Their grandmother was siamese, and they have a certain slim, elegant look to them and more triangular faces than most kitties I have seen.
I say near-black, but they are actually deep smoke grey tabbies. Or something.

Taken from Wikipedia
The Lurcher is not a dog breed, but rather a type of dog native to the British Isles, a hearty crossbred sighthound which is generally a cross between a Greyhound and another sort of local dog. Lurchers can be crossed several times, and there is no set type, they can be as small as a Whippet or as large as an Irish Wolfhound, but most are chosen for a size that is around the size of a Greyhound, and a distinct sighthound form is preferred.
Generally, the aim of the cross was to produce a sighthound with brains, a canny animal suitable for the original purpose of the Lurcher, poaching. Developed in the middle ages in Great Britain, the Lurcher was created because only nobility were allowed to have purebred sighthounds like Greyhounds, Whippets and Staghounds, whereas crosses, or curs, had no such perceived value. Similarly, nobility owned most land and commoners were not allowed to hunt game on crown land or other noble estates. The crosses also made for a more trainable animal, as was vitally important that a Lurcher would not give chase to prey if anyone might be watching, unlike purebred sighthounds which give chase to any fast moving objects. Roma, more commonly known as Gypsies, were instrumental in developing the Lurcher type, and the word Lurcher is believed to derive from a Romani word meaning thief.
The Lurcher has as varied uses as types can be crossbred, but generally they are used as a hunting dog which can chase and kill their prey. Hare coursing is the most common modern sport for a lurcher, but they can be used for chasing rabbits that have been ferreted out by ferrets or terriers, bolted foxes, or any manner of other available game. The Lurcher is best used in open ground, so generally men or other dogs are used to flush game from thick brush. Lure coursing and dog racing is also popular in areas with little available hunting or for people who dislike hunting. The modern Lurcher is growing from its old image of disrepute to heights of popularity as an exceptional family dog, and many groups have been founded to rehome Lurchers in pet households.

Yes, yes they are. Cos really, there's not that many references to large groups of redheads in pop culture, which is how I tend to name my pets (except for Harriet - I didn't name that one, and if I had, it probably would have been Harry anyway, cos it's itty-bitty and black and has long fins and big goggle-eyes and hangs around with the Weasleys a lot).

I have a new pet :yup:
My boxer-baby Dempsey is now permanently living with my former neighbors in California, is insanely happy (as are they with he) and I have full visitation rights whenever I'm there, so it's all good. But I got to be missing having a creature around the house.
So, adopted a feline friend from the Humane Society shelter :) She's a six-year-old tabby, kind of small for her age (when we first went to the shelter and met/played with her, I thought she was only about a year old.) VERY active and probably the most affectionate and cuddly cat I've ever known (and I had lots of cats growing up). She CONSTANTLY wants to be with or near you, purrs nonstop (kind of a squeaky purr, like she needs some WD40) and does the "kneading" thing with her paws all the time. Very sweet.
Got some pics on the digital camera, just gotta figure out how to transfer 'em to this computer.
Oh, and her name is Pandora :)

Got some pics on the digital camera, just gotta figure out how to transfer 'em to this computer. :imwait:
I'm on vacation and boarded my dogs at a different place this year. I decided to give them the full doggie resort (http://www.alpha-pet.com/lodging.html) treatment (in the Beach Suite, if you check the link) while the cat and bird stayed home with the usual once a day pet sitter visit. The woman at the doggie resort took a photo of my pups playing in the resort's dog park. They look darned happy, don't they?

I posted some pictures of my greyhound, Olive, in the gallery over the weekend. Here's another (this time she's not dressed up like a fool).

She's a beauty queen even without the antlers and bus.

Here is my little cockatiel underneath an old picture of me feeding my other pet. This little guy (the cockatiel) is a ham, has a large vocabulary and sings a song when I pretend my hands are conducting him, or when I dance around. This is his playpen that sits next to my computer desk, he can be next to me when I am working.

Here is my cat perched on a rock. Whenever I go out and photograph she likes to insert herself in the pic. It's annoying and enduring all at the same time.

She will probably be our last cat as we want to start travelling a lot, now that our child is on her own The is getting up there in age. Although our other cat died 2 years ago lived until she was 22 years old. So we may have this cat longer than normal too. That probably came out sounding like we can't wait. We can, we just decided we won't replace them when they are gone.
Besides they are irreplaceable, aren't they?

Judging from your avatar, he is often pleased with y'all's day. :chuckle:
No, he is sad without his job, becomes peevish.
I think that happens with dogs who are bred to work. My mom (foolishly) adoped a yellow Lab from a breeder. The breeder specialized in working purebreds, not show dogs. Rudy would have been happy as a rescue dog or hunting dog, but as a pet for a single woman in her sixties she doesn't have enough to do and gets antsy and sad.
It's true about all dogs, mine was a rescue dog but it's in his nature to run and catch things (small animals), at home he tears toys to pieces, or does crazy laps around the garden attacking grass.
He wears a full greyhound muzzle when we walk him as he gets aggressive towards other dogs and thinks Jack Russels and other small dogs are rats. We live close to a large nature area where I can't let him off his lead for fear of him maybe getting the muzzle off and catching wildlife, the wildlife there include Peacocks.

The reindeer and bus costumes are wonderful, ms_ann_thrope!

I love cockatiels! Every one I have had the pleasure of meeting is a little bundle of personality. They are remarkably pretty for their small packaging. Your cat is gorgeous and I understand what you mean about the decision to not replace when the time comes.

Rudy would have been happy as a rescue dog or hunting dog, but as a pet for a single woman in her sixties she doesn't have enough to do and gets antsy and sad.I think this happens so often. :( My friends running the doberman pinscher rescue try to match individual dogs with prospective clients, but even the older dobies need purposeful stimulation to be content.
He wears a full greyhound muzzle when we walk him as he gets aggressive towards other dogs and thinks Jack Russels and other small dogs are rats.I brought Sadie to a "Bark in the Park" function and was amazed at how the owners of the toy dogs don't understand this. Sadie and I would be standing, watching some event and I'd look down to find some fist-sized shitzu or chihuaha running up to sniff at Sadie while the owner was at the other end of a 15 foot retractable lead, back turned, chatting it up with some other folks.
Sadie's is rather social with other dogs and was eager to be friendly even with these furrballs. But good gosh, after they sniffed their hellos (which, if I hadn't stopped her would have included Sadie digging her nose under their bellies and lifting them up like a skip loader scoop), the teeny things would go running off. :yup: Sadie's instinct reaction kicked in: ooh, a chase!
Must catch and tear to pieces :yup:
Actually I took Bounce to puppy classes when I first got him, he wanted to play with the other puppies, at that time he was no danger to them. I'm almost positive the owners reactions were part of his agressive problems now, they would get scared that the slightly bigger puppy was play fighting with their dog and in turn their dog would get scared.
Then of course he was jumped by two golden retrievers one night, and he kicked arse. Ever since he is of the mind that defense is the best offense.

Must catch and tear to pieces :yup:  Olive is the same with small, white, fluffy dogs; I think she thinks they are bunnies. She used to be obsessed with a little Maltese named Pepe at her old daycare, always trying to put her mouth on him. Oddly, she doesn't care a whit about all small, fast-moving dogs... just ones that are predominantly white; she goes batshit over those. :zombieglomp:
xyza, Bounce is very handsome! pescifish, is Sadie the black dog in your avatar?

Me too :) She's actually six but still acts like a kitten. Unfortunately, that translates also apparently into cold-blooded and enthusiastic mouse-murder as I was informed a few nights ago

Tyger! Tyger! burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?
