I used to live in London for a wee while with a gal from Wellington. She was a hot wee thing - half Indian, half Kiwi, and very, very cute. She would totally go into a Wanda from A Fish Called whenever she heard a guy speak with a Scottish accent. I swear she must've shagged half the Scottish lads in London, and each one left her grinning like a Cheshire cat!

To the women who have replied on this thread, may I ask what appeal the pictures have?

I think the unexpected glimpse of normally hidden bits is a big part of the entertainment for me. Men give us so few opportunities for that kind of frisson. Combine that with the tough guy in a skirt thing, and it's a deliciously keen little thrill.

Petra
07-31-2005, 03:06 AM
Indeed. To me, they are just funny pics. My fave is one that doesn't actually show anything - the one with the two kids peering up the piper's dress. The look on those kids faces is priceless. :D

And as liv also said, it's the tough guy in a skirt letting it all hang out thing. The fact that the kilt and one's tartans are generally formal dress for formal occassions makes it even more fun, methinks.

I just have a very juvenile sense of humour. :giggle:

I must say I have a thing for guys in kilts -- particularly big, burly, scary-looking guys in kilts. I don't know why, it's just hot. And there's nothing in the world like groping a dude in a kilt and suddenly realizing that he's gone traditional. YOW! :thrust:

Count yourself lucky then, Legs. As a yankee who got stationed in the South, I know that you can get grits at McDonalds even, though I'm not sure why you'd want to. I've got my kilt. The real thing. Made in New Zealand. Since I have an exceedingly English family name, it's rather obvious I have no immediate familial connection to the Scots traditions. I am about a quarter Scots, from both sides. Lowland Scots. So, the kilt I chose was the one I thought amusing: Clergy. I got my Roman collar "Friar Tuck" shirt, gray tweed jacket and Balmoral. Snap on my "ULC Clergy" tag, and I'm rarin' to go. This Halloween, I'm adding the horns. Hmmm...maybe I should try to find an old copy of the Vulgate.

I shall leave you all to your fantasies, because trust me, Scottish men in general are lardy, overweight, beer-bellied, misogynistic, beer-swilling, deep-fried-mars-bar-eating, lazy, workshy, stomach-churning heart-attacks waiting to happen.

And those are their good points.

So if you'll excuse me, I shall stay with my fantasies of Aussie men, and just to make it clear, I prefer the Ian Thorpe type to the beer-swilling sheepshaggers, ok?

Fantasies is right according to an article from The Sunday Telegraph last year:
Aussies are fatter than Americans
By Sharri Markson
November 21, 2004

THE average Australian woman is a size 16 and weighs 8kg heavier than her American counterpart, according to authoritive new international research.

Australian men are also 3kg heavier than American males, the joint study by the University of Adelaide and US researchers shows.

I had this crazy idea that since I knew I was going to stand out at Basic anyway, so I figured why not show up in a kilt?

Fortunately, a rare attack of reality hit me, and I didn't.

I don't have a family tartan, I'm afraid, like most Irish families, we go by county instead. Catch is I'm not sure if technically I would wear the Dublin or Kerry patterns. I've not been too pushed about it, as any particularly important ceremony, I'll likely be in Dress Blues anyway.

Knew a chap in a Highlander regiment, he had an NCO detailed to ensure that all the soldiers were 'regimentally attired' under their kilts.

Not to worry, CT. Those "family tartans" that those bleedin' Scots go on and on about? They're just part and parcel of the fabrications of Romanticists of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Scots didn't wear "family tartans" at all...they wore the ones they thought attractive, regardless of the pattern. All that "family tartan" nonsense is modern invention.

Oh...and going to one of the games will cure you of that 'kilts are for formal wear' silliness. You'll see barefoot, bare legged, and...need I say it, bare chested men wandering about EVERYWHERE in kilts. My piper buddy liked to strip down to his wifebeater and Converse (a popular low-top tennis shoe, before the 'running shoe' era) after his band had finished competing...because our local games are invariably on one of the hotter summer weekends...but then, he was a handsome guy, anyway.

The pipers tend to congregate down by the dancers....certain dancers always collected a small crowd of pipers. Dono what that was about...all that jumping up and down...

It saddens me that kilts are so popular with you ladies; I think they look utterly ridiculous.

He'd look better in something else.

Kilts are sort of romantic.
I think I could argue that most of the high heels and short skirts women don aren't that flattering either. However, the idea of what is under the kilt with easy access is part of the appeal. Plus guys who aren't too afraid of their masculinity to wear a skirt are extra hot.

I'm not opposed to men in skirts per se, but I think that kilts in particular are almost never flattering.

I'm certain there are other skirt-like garments for men that are more flattering.

I think kilts are flattering on large men. On models they look goofy, but they drape nicely with a little heft behind them.

I wear my kilt on formal occasions (which are pretty rare), and to the Highland Games. I think it's much more comfortable than most other formal wear.

Years ago, at the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games, some guy came up to me and said, "If I looked like that, I'd be a Scot, too."

I think it was meant as a complement, but I'm not entirely certain what he meant.

I have blue eyes, and I'm told that my tartan goes well with them ...

The only occasion I've worn a kilt to was the Bobby Burns Night Dinner. It was a borrowed Royal Stewart....I didn't get much sleep that night.

I now own my own kilt, but I've yet to wear it to any occasion.

I'm told that I look more Irish than Scots, but I think that's just stereotypes. My Scots heritage friends tell me that with the wheaten hair, red beard, grey-blue eyes, and scads of freckles, I certainly have sufficient number of morpholigical qualifiers. It's there...on all sides. Lowland Scots, mostly.

My kilt plaid is also blue...

So...'easy access' to 'what is under the kilt' is part of the attraction? I guess it's not the same 'what' that is accessible through the zipper, huh? I'm curious, because I wonder if leaving one's zipper down will elicit the same response.

Dear noobs who register solely to view the attachments itt,

I have some bad news. It seems that the Scottish Tartans Authority doesn't think much of your tastes. "Childish and unhygienic (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/politics/scotland/8149592/Draught-guidance-a-kilt-need-underwear.html)" are the words they used. Now I call that hurtful. Hurtful and gratuitous.

Tartans Authority director Brian Wilton said kilt wearers should have the "common sense" to realise they should wear underwear beneath their country's national dress.

He said "The idea that you are not a real Scot unless you are bare under your kilt should be thrown into the same wastepaper basket as the idea that you're not a real Scot unless you put salt on your porridge.

"People should not be browbeaten into believing that nonsense. Just because Highlanders wore nothing in the days before Y-fronts were invented doesn't mean that we, in the 21st Century, should wear nothing too.

"Sending children up chimneys is traditional too, but we don't do it now and the same should apply to wearing nothing under a kilt.

I think that means that every time you fap to this thread, you're exploiting a Victorian child. But fear not, there is a resistance brewing. Really more of a civil rights movement, I'd say, given what's at stake here.

Inverness-based kilt maker Ian Chisholm, a spokesman for the Scottish Kilt Makers' Association, said: "The tradition of no underwear being worn was a stipulation of Scottish military regulation.

"To say it is unhygienic is wrong. The freedom of movement is healthy. We always tell customers to wear nothing under the kilt if everything is in good working order."

Sonoma Bear has a very good friend who lives in California. The friend is a New York Jew who moved to California and became a Quaker. He is a doctor who runs a multilingual family practice, weighs 350 lbs, has long red hair that reaches to his ass, AND he likes to wear kilts.

Put that in your brain and smoke it.

The kilt wearing is the least of his eccentricities.

My brother-in-law is an air traffic controller up in Alaska. Apparently since they instituted formal business dress, even though he is in a highly secure ain't-nobody-getting-in part of the tower. So he went to the ancestral dress of his family, and wears a kilt.
That's not the oddest part, the oddest part is he wears it while driving his Segway through Anchorage's "bad part of town" to get to work.

When I hear kilts, I think of guys like this.

All others are posers.

And being a connoisseur of mature men, I think this guy is very sexy.

Hmmm... I wonder if I can get Sonoma Bear in a kilt?
