There should be a "Most High Scores" high score table in the arcade. I'm so far ahead of the rest of you useless gits I could go on vacation for three years and I'd probably still have a few.
Of course, most of you probably have a life unlike me, which is a small compensation, I suppose, but can you really claim it for yourself knowing that someone on the southern tip of Africa totally PWNs you anyway?
Without further ado, here is my 12-inch list:
1. Snake Champion, with a score of 1341
2. Enemy Shooting Champion, with a score of 2920
3. Kill Kenny Champion, with a score of 63100
4. Maeda Path Champion, with a score of 9010
5. Rapid Motion Champion, with a score of 410500
6. Radial Snake Champion, with a score of 124
7. Simpsons Shooter Champion, with a score of 2130
8. Frogger Champion, with a score of 5580
9. BlackJack Champion, with a score of 8900
10. Chicken Champion, with a score of 9367
11. Karts Champion, with a score of 130800
12. Moon Patrol Champion, with a score of 13250
13. What-A-Shot Champion, with a score of 67
14. Bloody Pingu Champion, with a score of 1172
15. Just Not Cricket Champion, with a score of 18250
16. Rainman Champion, with a score of 2058
17. Slack Man Champion, with a score of 151850
18. Stuart Champion, with a score of 2690
19. Pingu Slap Champion, with a score of 688
20. Flamingo Drive Champion, with a score of 4607

Well if its any consolation I forgot you have to click the take the challenge link to actually play the challenge. So the first time round, I went into the game thinking it would automatically pick up the challenge (it doesn't - you must click the take the challenge link and play) - and on my first shot I smacked the pingu into the giraffe right in front of me. Then I exited and saw it was still telling me I have an outstanding challenge. Hehehe.

On Flamingo Drive
1) Learn the angles for hitting a giraffe in the mouth. It can be useful because in some places the giraffe always toss the pingu in a certain range, ensuring that if you want to bounce it off a certain snake (usually the next one on from the giraffe) to get the pingu over an elephant or something, you can do this more easily in some cases.
2.) However, you'll only occasionally actually need to take the above route
3.) On your opening shot, try get the angle just below 1/4 of the way up, then whack with between 85%-100% force. This will hit the pingu under the giraffe, bounce a few times, hit the snake, go over the elephant and the tree and (if you're lucky) roll under the next two giraffes, bounce of the next snake over the one after it, hit the next snake and go over the next tree. It very rarely gets over two trees. Usually you'll land up in the area between the first and second tree.
4.) If you hit the pingu at 45 degrees or less it won't fly high enough to get caught by the ($%$^$) vulture and slow down (unless it comes down and bounces on a snake), so 45 degree shots are good for getting over a tree or elephant.
5) Look on the bar at the bottom. If there's a long open space then a snake then an obstacle (elephant or tree), you need to let the angle go between 1/5 and 1/4 of the way up (17 degrees) then hit with all your might. This will make the pingu do a low bounce rather than a slide (which slows it down), hit the snake and clear the obstacle.
BTW I see you're right about Stuart. Strange, I must have been confusing it with one of the other titles I won back.

I can imagine him, playing Frogger game after Frogger game, swearing profusely every time the game arbitrarily kills him as he jumps in the leftmost slot (that game is soooo buggy) until at last, after a sleepless night, trembling from all the caffeine, he inches past me: "Yes!!!!",
But I'll take it back, tomorrow, of course.

Man, I can't figure how the Mahjong scores work. I've got it out many times, yet only score low. How the heck does it work?

If you figure it out, let me know. I've only cleared it a couple times (got stuck with FOUR once) but yeah, low score. :( I think it's all about the time...

I don't think time has anything to do with it, as I've got it out quicker than Blakes [old] high score before, and still scored low. Bloody thing. It's one of the few games I can play and not have the sound cut into the music I'm listening to.
Edit: oops. Zoe was here. I'd better get changed.

I haven't even completed it but there is a time counter so maybe that affects score?
What I have figured out is that whenever you remove to pieces, the following considerations apply
1) If, by removing, you make two new tiles available that weren't previously, its the best possible scenario. Its possible to remove and diminish the number of remove-able tiles.
2) If, by removing, you make only one new tile available its a questionable decision -especially if there are removals outstanding that conform to rule(1).
3) If, by removing, you make no new tiles available its a highly dubious decision
4) Watch out for removing tiles that match more than one available tile or match another tile that will soon become available that's more handy to remove
5) All "Cherry" tiles with a squiggle instead of a western style number match all similar "Cherry" tiles for the purposes of matching
6) All "Cherry" tiles with a number instead of an oriental squiggle match all similar "Cherry" tiles
7) Ditto for "Grass/Reed" tiles
8) The center tile covers 4 potentially remove-able tiles, so removing that one tile makes 4 avalable
9) the left and right middle 3 tiles similarly obscure 4 tiles so clearing them makes more overall tiles available for removal.

No, I was being facetious. You spent all that time writing out the strategy that I imagined you sitting there, eyeing each piece carefully, and not quite making it to actually remove a piece. I was just being cheeky. :)

And you call me a cheeky bugger. :D
BTW, I approach each and every game in the arcade in the same manner. I believe Blake does, too. This is why, I think, he latched onto Frogger, like I did. The game is so buggy by level 3 or 4 you cannot continue to the next level. But you earn points every time you go up or down on the screen (as opposed to sideways).
These two facts mean the best strategy is to jump up, then down cntinuously on the road as much as possible rather than racing for home - and on the level where you can no longer advance, accumulate as many points as possible simply by advancing and retreating as often as possible (up/down repreatedly on your keyboard)
Similarly Beyelzu figured out, as I did, that there is a time limit to the Simpsons and the targets appear in the same order, meaning that if you memorize the order, then shoot every possible target within the set, inviolable time limit, you will achieve the perfect possible score and be undefeatable (Unless the game records a tie as a win), thus remaining champion for all tme. Bastard. Ancient Art of War, indeed. We have some Sun Tzu's here on this board.
The secret behind dominance is recognising these hidden characteristics, the "wiring under the board" (to appropriate Terence McKenna's line about reality and Shamans) in each game.

Farren also looks for games that can either be won quickly or abused, so do I actually. I like alchemy but it would take to long to get the high score. I like tetris, but liv has high scores that would take forever to get, so in a quest for dominance, one must have priorites. Damn, farren, you are as competitive as I am and so is blake just not as vocal I think.
I appreciate the compliment farren. If only I had gotten to the arcade sooner, I could have started out as a challenge. But what the hell, I am picking my spots and am trying to accumulate a little territory of my own.
Plus I am in a pretty good position as king maker between you and blake.

At last, someone targets Blake. Woohoo!
So I guess that's a two point lead for the Master of the Known Universe now.
Well Luna chick I will offer you the few tricks that I know for Mahjong. I keep the screen on the lowest resolution, it is easier to see the matches that way. I pull the matches from the edges rather than the middle. I hope that helps.

Does anyone know how the hell Mahjong is scored? I had figured it was most matches in shortest time, but if one looks at the top scores, it's obvious there is some other magical high scoring factor other than speed.
Some people solved the game in incredibly short times and still have less points than the highest scorers. Are some tiles higher scoring than others? Should we try to match certain tiles first? Or maybe certain areas?
Blake
09-26-2004, 05:26 PM
I'm convinced there's nothing more to scoring Mahjong than speed. The times listed in the high score tables are hopelessly wonky and bear no relation to reality. The only times I've scored high have been when I come in under 5 minutes, judging by the personal counter that pops up viewable only to the player.
And damn you, Ex-zombie, you faithless whore, for attacking my flank when I'm fighting tyranny. :D Just kidding. He wasn't targeting me, Farren, you Death Star you; he was just obsessed with one of the most difficult games on the board. I know the feeling. I notice you can't seem to place there. ;)
Farren's dead right, it's all about the "wiring under the board." Frogger never goes past level 3, as long as I've played it, and you only get points for advancing, not for retreating. If you've *really* found wiring under the board for Blackjack, Farren, I must say I'm quite bitter. I've only been able to play it for the game of chance it supposedly is, winning as much as possible and accepting philosophically the unbeatable hands.
Sorry, Zoe, for leaving your challenges hanging; as you no doubt know, I've been pretty single-mindedly trying to make the arcade safe for democracy. Yes, I'm quite competitive, but not *that* competitive; otherwise I'd be blazing through the place wholesale, instead of just trying to pick off Farren's titles. :)
Farren

Blake, the method I have for Blackjack only statistically increases your chances and you can still screw up but it generally makes you go higher and higher (you can have medium length runs of bad luck but over a certain number of hands there'll be a net gain). Here it is:
1) Always bet max at the beginning of a hand. Since you don't know what your hand's going to be anyway there's no point in betting different amounts on different turns. In fact that way you risk betting high on failures and low on wins.
2) Always hold on 15 or higher. The chance you'll get better is worse than the chance you'll screw up. In any event the system must get 17 or above before stopping so even if it gets 15 or 16 it always takes another card, with the attendant chance of screwing up.
3) Always double your bet on 10 or 11. There are a lot of 10's and royals in the pack so the chances are reasonable you'll hit 20 or 21 on the next card. Even if you do get something sad like 12 or 13, the limitation that the house can't settle under 17 means if they draw 15 or 16 they still have to keep going and often bust anyway.
4) Only insure against dealer blackjacks if you have a strong hand (like a 10 or 11 and you're about to double, or 18 or above). Always insure if you have a strong hand.
5) This one you probably do anyway. Always restart if you fall below your initial 2000.
6) Don't deviate from the above rules (or any modified rules you've adopted). If you have a short run of bad luck, say "aah screw it this isn't working" and change, half the time you find yourself losing when the dealer's run of bad luck should be starting.

Very interesting, Farren; thanks for sharing! That's essentially how I've been playing, but with slightly less discipline than you've insisted on.
All right, in return, I will share what I think are the most important points of Mahjong. First off, one mustn't feel bad for not being able to finish. It's a flat fact that many configurations of Mahjong are simply impossible to play to the end. (I once faced a game with all four matching tiles showing on the top two tiers.) Along with the tips Farren's mentioned above, one should remember that all tiles come in sets of four. If you can remove all four at once, you're safe from screwing up the game any worse than it already is. Memory is key. The more tiles you can remember, staring at the board before you begin, the better off you'll be. Similarly, if you remember you've already removed one pair, and see the matching pair free for removal, do not hesitate.
I have a shitty memory. If someone comes along with an excellent one, we're all screwed.

[Mahjong] (I once faced a game with all four matching tiles showing on the top two tiers.)
That seems to happen more often than random chance, I think. 3 out of 4 on that center two tiers happens quite often. I refuse to even start those games. :glare: :hmph:

Up until my last post, it had only happened to me twice. In the course of attempting to re-wrest the title from Ex-zombie (which I believe will require a time of less than 3 1/2 minutes), I think it's happened to me three more times. Yeah, maybe the game tries to be sly & deliberately fuck you over; those times, it just falls a bit short because it's too obvious. Of course, no starting those. :)
Anyway, in territory further afield ... I finally AM Blake the Snake.
