View Full Version : The PZ Factor or Making Smilies Go Bye-Bye

In honor of our smilie-phobic member pzmyers, we have added an option to the user control panel called "Disable Smilies". If you would like to disable most of the smilies in posts, simply go to "edit options (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/profile.php?do=editoptions)" in the usercp, find and click the box under "Disable Smilies", then scroll to the bottom of the page and click on "save changes". That's it!
Smilies in post titles (called post icons) will not be affected by this, similarly if a smilie is inserted into a post as an embedded image it will not be affected. However, the majority of smilies (represented by a word in sandwiched in colons) will not appear as images.
If you have any questions or find any bugs with this, please let us know.
Thanks!
Damn freedom of thought and expression. I think people should be forced to view all the smilies :protest:. In fact we should spam  non-members of this board with all (1088+20*days_since_last_friday) smilies :lasergun: until they accept our one true world view. :ufo:

I've also already got a bunch of people on ignore, just on general principles. It's very satisfying. You've got your freedom of speech, I've got the freedom to turn you off.
But isn't it more satisying to let people know you're ignoring them?:lalala:

No, it's much more sadistic to leave them wondering.
Why the smile phobia PZ? Do you really find cuteness that annoying? I would insert a winking smiley, but you would not see it.

This (http://www.iidb.org/vbb/showthread.php?s=&postid=385210#post385210) might answer your question, Beth. It's 100 proof pz.
Thanks, Liv. Fair enough, PZ. I understand your reasoning, but it goes against what I have learned on boards. Sometimes I might make a joking sarcastic remark and it end up turning into a huge flame war. In some boards, the mods began insisting on use of smilies to prevent flame wars when the insulting remarks were intended as jokes.
But isn't it more satisying to let people know you're ignoring them?:lalala:
No, it's much more sadistic to leave them wondering.
Well, sir, your sadism is lost on me because no one could possibly ignore li'l ol' me.

I don't have anyone on ignore, just on general principles.

I think you're being an arsehole. There that should do it. If I'm not already on ignore, that is. I'd tend to agree. This place is the only board I know of that doesn't need any "ignore poster" feature.

Apparently, I am already on ignore by a number of people. That would explain my apparent invisibility.

You would never be on my ignore list. You are too kind.

You're engaged in plenty of discussions all over this board, warrenly I get pretty exasperated by that kind of talk. I think it's bullshit, quite frankly, and unfair to all the people who answer your posts, very much including myself.

Well, I know for a fact I am on at least one person's ignore list. I suspect I'm on more than that, but I have no way of knowing.

I'm on somebody's ignore list at the Skeptical Community forum. On account of my being such a shameless troll, you see.

Ohhhhhhh yes it does.

Wait. Didn't you have Corona on your ignore list? See, people, this is why making a big deal out of announcing who's on your ignore list is a silly thing to do. ;)

Wait. Didn't you have Corona on your ignore list?
At one time, yes. He's off of it now, though.

Ah yes. I had cleverly deduced that.
Alas, ignorers so rarely post official retractions. It's like a newspaper making an accusation above the fold on page 1 and only correcting it in tiny print on page 23.

I wasn't aware that I was expected to announce my taking Corona off of my ignore list.

Didn't say you were.

 Okay, then.
On an only slightly related note, it would be interesting to have a feature of the forum software that allows you to see which people have you on ignore.

Well, you can access your buddy and ignore lists via your user cp and that gives you the whole overview. Did you mean somewhere in the threads themselves?
Goliath
12-12-2004, 06:24 AM
Well, not quite...I actually meant making it possible for a user to make an account and then see who has him/her on ignore.
Sorry for not being clear.

Ohh... Hmm... Well, I've seen a hack that allowed people to see who had them on their buddy lists, but I don't think I've seen the same thing with ignore. I imagine it would be possible to convert that hack from buddy to ignore (or both), but it seems like a really negative thing to me.

Yeah, I guess it would probably start more hate and flame-wars than it would probably prevent. Like I said, just an interesting tangential thought.

If you have someone on ignore, can you still receive PMs from them?
livius drusus
12-13-2004, 01:25 PM
No sir. The ignored person gets an error, I believe, after they click send.
No sir. The ignored person gets an error, I believe, after they click send.Ah, perhaps we should start spam pm'ing to see who has us on ignore then! *duck*

Ah, but that wouldn't work on this board, see, because we have the lovely little custom Disallow Contact feature which blocks people from emailing/PMing you but doesn't block their posts. So at best your spam campaign could only narrow it down to someone having you on ignore or having disallowed contact. ;)

Yeah, I guess it would probably start more hate and flame-wars than it would probably prevent. Like I said, just an interesting tangential thought.
But since they have you on ignore, they wouldn't know you were flaming them, except for what was quoted in someone else's (not on ignore) post? Then, would that be like gossip?
Personally, I don't use the ignore feature. I don't use the buddy feature, either, what does it do? And what is jBuddy??

When you make someone your buddy they automatically agree with everything you post, whether they really agree or not. It comes in handy when you're outnumbered in flamewars. Jbuddy does the same thing, but for juveniles.

The buddy list gives you easy access to the profiles of people you PM a lot, basically. If you click on Quick Links - Buddy List, you can just check a box next to the handle of the person (or even multiple people) you want to PM, click a button and a nicely addressed little PM box opens ready for you to type in and send.
The jBuddy list is for journal favorites. The journal home page will list them in a square in the upper right so you can check for new entries, new comments, etc., at a glance.

Looks like I found someone to put on my Ignore list :P
thanks for the info, liv.
