So I'm using Firefox which generally does a fine job at controlling pop-ups, but I still get those evil little pop-unders. Does anybody have any ideas on how to eliminate them?

Pop-unders?
New one for me. Are these coming up in Internet Explorer windows or do they look like this. (http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/docs/messagepopup/)
For IE windows you have some sort of spyware on the computer. Time to scan.
For the second ones, disable the Windows Messenger Service as per instruction on the page. This is in no way related to MSN Messenger so if you use that it will still work after disabling this service.

Naw... I use Firefox and I disabled WMS the minute I got my laptop. I also have multiple anti-malware programs, all of which return me a clean bill of health.
Pop-unders are ads that stay behind your current window. You see them in the Start bar or when you close/minimize your active window.

I've been getting an obscene number of pop-unders with Firefox lately too. I guess the technique for getting around their pop-up blocking functionality is spreading fast.
Switch to Mac and Safari. ;)
(edit: you would think being in the program right now I would know how to spell it. Must drink more coffee)
I found this,

If you don't have a usercontent.css installed I would recomend it,
http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/adblock
It's been a nice help to me as the oddest seemingly innocent sites were putting crap in my cookies and it speeds up load time (important for us <56k users)
I would also say maybe go through your cookies, there are some bad cookies that track your webactivity and bring up pop ups. I'm unsure if Malware programs check cookies as well (being on a mac).

Some (most?) malware programs check cookies. I use Spybot and it routinely removes dozens of cookies from my computer.
Am not getting any popunders, popovers, popouts, popalongs or popthroughs. This may be due to a coo-ool extension, NoScript (get it at the main firefox extensions page). It's momentarily annoying when I click 3 times on a button and get frustrated until I remember that I have javascript disallowed for all sites except those I specifically allow (like here :cheerful: ). All popup techniques I can think of rely on javascript.

Just installed NoScript. Thanks JoeP. Is it relatively simple to allow javascripte at a particular site?
Visit the site. Check for crossed-out S in the status-bar - click - and select one of the options to allow the site (or a parent of the site), or "temporarily" allow it, ie for the current browser session only. It's as easy as ... something quite easy.

I see that now JoeP, thanks much. I have had a few pop-ups and unders sneak through a few times. This should stop them. :pleased:

I used to get sporadic pop unders too even with Firefox and its latests updates until I discovered this site: Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm)
What you do here is simple. You download a HOSTS file that nulls out most if not all the common advertising sites addresses. After you download this file and substitute it for the one you have in your windows directory, you will see a dramatic reduction in cookie tracking, advertsing frames in many of the sites you visit and also sneaky pop unders. My weekly spyware scans on my PC dropped from 100+ items to less than 3 or 4, after I installed this file.

If you run firefox do the following:
1. Load up your FireFox browser.
2. In the URL field type: about:config
3. Go anywhere on that page, right click and go to New -> Integer
4. Type: privacy.popups.disable_from_plugins
5. Type: 2
