I don't know what came over me, but I upgraded the web server software just now with no planning or warning. I went to try out this new hack, see, and it said I had to have php imap support so I checked the server console to see if we had that installed and we didn't, and at the same time I noticed that our php version was an old one and they strongly recommended upgrading for security reasons and so I just clicked the button and did it. I'm very glad the server didn't meltdown, but it could have. I honestly don't know what I was thinkin'.

Ahem.

Okay then. Anyway. All's well that ends well. I'll try to remember to forewarn y'all before doing any major upgrades in the future. Sorry! :innocent:

Oh and I still haven't confirmed that the hack works yet, but I got further with it than previously. It's a pretty cool little hack, actually. It's a web interface for pop3 e-mail servers fully integrated into the forum software. In other words, you could use the FF to check your e-mail! This isn't a promise, though. If it doesn't work well or if it's resource intensive we won't keep it.

And that's about it for my way-past-the-bedtime rambling this evening.

Well, the email hack is groovy and at first test it worked fine for me, but you must be ouchoremind, boy. No more fun with server upgrades in the middle of the night, please, thank you. :kookoo:

With wisdom you will learn to ignore the temptation to make upgrades without due testing, my boy. Meditate upon stability and users. :meditate:

Liv: no smilies found for 'zen' or 'buddha'? (From now on my smilie suggestions will be based on keyword search. I thought there was a buddha in there but it's obv not described as such.)

Well in all honesty I did read a thread at our host's site wherein the majority of people who did the upgrade reported no issues at all, so I wasn't that worried. However because things could've gone wrong, and because I knew an Apache reboot would be necessary, I should have planned, warned, etc. I'm honestly not usually so impulsive. Well, with server upgrades anyway. :innocent:

At any rate the good news is that we're now using php 4.3.8 with Curl, pSpell, imap and GD 2.0 compiled in. (Okay so I added a few extra things besides imap that I've found useful on previous servers too. Shoot me. :P)
