I do hereby solemnly pledge to post all my smilie requests in this thread, and moreover, not to use the Impact font for the purpose.

First, I'd like to acknowledge  the mighty keeper :dragon: of the greatest smilie hoard ever seen outside mythology or fantasy. Some of the requests I've already had satisfied (feeding the addiction):

duck :ducky:, :mallard:
tiger :tiger: (that's not in my top 500 favourites, unfortunately; a bit washed out)
Hannibal Lecter :hannibal:
tennis :tennis:
Gollum :gollum:
eagle :eagle:

I can't even find all the requests I made

joe

JoeP

And here are the outstanding requests that I could gather. They're not demands, more a kind of "ooh! shiny thing!" lure to the smilie dragon (pbuh).

leopard and/or a pointy-eared lynx, caracal or bobcat
more tennis ones ... a regular original smilie face that spins to be a tennis ball ... this is such a natural there's got to be one out there (but I couldn't find one)
buddha, zen
multiple simultaneous glomping (if you don't get one of these Farren will just work his evil another way)

JoeP
09-14-2004, 12:43 AM
And finally for now (there will be more; yea, even unto the tenth generation), some general concepts that I don't think are well represented enough:

fear, fright, afraid
shock, horror
work, slave (ok, there's :whip: )
read, write, book
beg, please, pleading :prayer:

:D

I found :tennisbal yesterday but forgot to tell you. I know it's not the spinning smilie you asked for (I think that would be killer too), but it's a start. Maybe I should look into learning to make my own.

Hmmm... :plotting:

JoeP
09-14-2004, 02:57 PM
:plotting: is excellent. Awaiting others eagerly :drooleek:

Don't think I'm being a gentleman and waiting for you to have a chance with the ones above before I post any more. I just haven't come up with any new missing ones yet. :noevil2:

SharonDee

I'm not Joe--whaddya know--but I'd like to request a better one of these: :shrug2:

That one's okay but it's a bit of a paleface (no offense to any Whities in the audience) and doesn't make its intentions clear.

Oh, and if it helps:  Y'all rule!

livius drusus
09-14-2004, 07:35 PM
I hear ya, Sharon. I can't say I was ever fully satisfied with him, but I liked the other shruggies even less.

And yes, worshipful praise is nothing if not helpful. For one thing, it gives me the chance to use this :bowing:. When I've hook all y'all up with every similie you could possibly desire, I'll finally get to use this: :ovation:

Well, I certainly don't prefer that one due to its inherent beauty. But out of all the shruggies I have seen, that one most accurately portrays what it's doing than any others

Okay, I added one more of these :afraid:, but I consider it just barely adequate. Honestly, I think the ones we've already got are pretty good on that score. You really think these aren't enough?
:buggin: :huh?:  :runaway: :yikes: :yipes: :bottle: :egad: :scared2: :scared:

Still working on these.

Sharon, I've uploaded Ymir's lovely . I hope you dig it.

In other random news of surf, I've changed the basic colon paren :) to a lighter version cause the dark blue was too dark. I've also added these:
:naughty: (for luna) :runinbox: :choices2: :frank: :tiefighter: :tink: :rollover: :gallop: :owl: :marsh: (for pesci and Chip), and finally :sex: , cause it's the only relatively explicit smilie I've found that genuinely amuses me.

:sniffles:

However, responding to Ymir's Blood's post on this is most appropriate. Chester is definitely a Ymir's Blood find, not mine, brought to my consciousness these 40x40 moons and board communities ago. I am delighted to see him in the quick pick list!

Yeah, well, it's funny how, even after those 40x40 lifetimes, memories of certain feelings can come rushing back, unbidden and unexpected. I wonder if smilies are the Internet equivalent to smells when it comes to memory triggers. I seem to have been taken away and deposited back into my past!

And, oh yeah, I didn't even see your post (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/showpost.php?p=6837&postcount=18) last night probably because I was trusting in those sunnabitch vB unread post markers--apparently I was lied to when I went through the forum. What category is that? I forgot to copy in the comment I made in one of my "derails" that I was going to focus on keywords. You get nothing or little to choose from if you enter those as keywords or you try to find a category with one of those words in the name. I didn't mean you need to go out and hunt for more smilies, but that we need to think about solving this 'search' issue. Does it mean we need to implement the extra 'keywords' field? 'Cos I'm ready to start on it ... it might involve some issues.

Ohhhhh.... I get it now. Yes, you're totally right. I've been trying to put something keywordy in the descriptions, but that's nothing like a solution, and as it is, I'm still just over halfway through making those changes.

Does it mean we need to implement the extra 'keywords' field? 'Cos I'm ready to start on it ... it might involve some issues.

Yup. I think it's time to get cracking on that. Without it the search will never turn up even some of the most commonly expressed sentiments.

No suh. I am an alumnus of just about every smilie set on every discussion board I could find, however, and that little dude's been on several of them. I'm thinking of replacing that apocryphal "No one" with the canonical "Nobody". It's been driving me nuts since I uploaded it.

/me visualises smilie a bit like :write: but with a poor character scribbling something, pushing it right, scribbling on the next page, pushing it right (in tray and out tray)
I'm sure I've seen something like this in some forgotten recess of the internet.

I'm glad you like them. I got PaintShop Pro yesterday and tried to make you a better tiger, but it was a bit more than I could chew, I'm afraid. First the manual, then the tiger.

Course, if you had the tiger first, the chewing would be no problem...

PSP comes with an Animation Shop component, doesn't it? Play! I used that for the librating moon phases avatar at HH (but I stole the original images). But with any art it takes time and exploration to get used to the medium and the tools.

No need to focus on this one, but you have a tennis ball and you have a basic shaded smilie. If you can work out how to edit intermediate images to create spinning, this would be a good exercise. Basing your practice on existing work is not cheating!

Art of programming #art_num++: anything in the "outline solution" or high-level design is pure imagination until you can see it in a prototype, or until some idiot commercial manager signs a contract for it.

Nevertheless, I'm so pleased with version 1 that I've got energy to tackle it. (Not that it's going to be mega difficult.) Also I'm pissed off* with idiot managers at work and may ease back slightly there. As if.

Pardon moi faux pas.

The 'comfy chair' reference was used as a threat on alt.atheism. An empty and humorous threat, but a threat.

I guess it's just the widespread Pythonesque usage of the Spanish Inquisition and the term "comfy chair" that tripped me up.

I think we need a "comfy chair" smily....'cause, y'know, nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition.

Ya know, I actually started that last night. Animation Shop did come with my PSP purchase, and I put the two images together back to back just fine, but the intermediates turned out to be a bit more of a headache than I had anticipated. That's why today I just went back to the total basics with the dude I attached above.

Several years ago, someone at IIDB posted a link to a small 'social' message board. I and several others visited there for awhile. (I briefly 'went native' so to speak.) Anywho, that was where I first met Ms. Pescifish.

Someone on that board posted the :marsh: smilie but no one could identify what it was. Upon seeing it, I dubbed it 'Chester' and so it has remained ever since.

Aha. Which leads me to ask, do we want to search in the filenames? Remember, configurable option!

And secondly, when keywords are in place, should the search show the keywords? Or at least the one(s) that matched? I'm thinking there could be confusing results elsewise.

We definitely do not want to search the filenames now that the descriptions are clean and the keywords on their way. How does one go about configuring that option?

Livius, you are a true star. They are all great, especially the :crab: And when did she: :blinkythefish: arrive?

There didn't seem to be much new stuff in the last few days. The smilie count was not rising. I was getting worried that you might be ill, or demoralised by the flood of smilie requests. That can not be allowed to happen!

Now we're at 1099 smilies! I hope by the time I post this and start my next reply it'll be 1100!

And when did she: :blinkythefish: arrive?

Oh, Blinky's been around for ages. Since the beginning, in fact, although the first version didn't actually blink. I found blinky2 shortly thereafter and took care of that oversight.

Some of the as of yet unannounced newbies include:

:bluebutterfly: :nyahnyah: :playboy: :spank: :sadcheer: :breath: :tongueincheek: :praying: :jekhyde: :welder: :amish: :pinocchio :nevertouch:

One does what one can. Occasionally life interferes with the pursuit of smilies. Also, we've drunk so much from the shallow pool of great ones that it's getting to be more a puddle.

Now we're at 1099 smilies! I hope by the time I post this and start my next reply it'll be 1100!

We already have a check that the user keywords are not blank.if ( $user_keywords )But if the user enters a single space, this check is not enough. Can you think of a way of covering that possibility?

But if the user enters a single space, this check is not enough. Can you think of a way of covering that possibility?
Hmm... interesting question, Master.

We could easily check to make sure a space hasn't been entered by doing:

if ($user_keywords) AND ($user_keywords != " ")

Right?

But then what about two spaces? Or three?

Perhaps the empty function?

if (!empty($user_keywords))

Oops! No. That won't work 'cause a space would return a non-empty result. Back to the drawing board...

Oh: I didn't mean I couldn't find it searching on 'two cents' or any variant of that, only on cash, coin or money. I see those keywords now return valuable smilies, which makes you an utterly wonderful person.

The hyphenation: I was using it in the sense where a noun phrase used as an adjective sometimes gets hyphenated (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyphen), like four-day week, blood-donor centre, left-hand drive, sign-language speaker, real-world example. The deal is smilies for coding, right, Joe? Well, since I've made some pretty high labor requests over the past couple of days, I figured you could use a few hits.

Perhaps it is a comment on the supposed hypocrisy of the Victorian Gentleman? The top hat and handlebar mustache certainly call that era to mind. The orange face's smile doesn't strike me as particularly lecherous, but the two-faced symbology works. :chin:

Hey Joe, early in the twentieth century their was a very famous stock character in the movies. He was a fine upstanding citizen by day. By night he crept around his various rental properties preying on defenseless young women.

The dialogue went something along the lines of:

Creepy landlord, "I've come for the rent"

Sweet young thing, "But kind sir, I have no money."

I'm sure you get the idea. This stock character was also present in silent movies as well. While addressing the young woman the guy would look particularly evil, and always tweaking that waxed handlebar mustache as he intimidated the young woman.

By day he was always the gentleman. Hence the two faces of the smilie.

Next.

I must agree...those horses are all stinko.

Well, no, you're right, the one you put up has a good dead horse, but it looks like it's being stroked with a pink marshmallow, rather than beaten. The scale between horse and smiley is somehow off, too.

Stay with quality...

I sorta thought somebody might be able to make a "knuckle sandwich" using the  Look at those digits! Close them up, one at a time, until there's a little lump on the end of that stick arm. Shake it menacingly. 'Course, there's :shakefist: but he's just not the same quality. I like the little yellow guys with the white eyes with black dot pupils....and the stick arms with the digits. (It's digital...)

Great job, liv! Next thing you know, you'll be creating original smilies of your own. Like, f'rinstance, a chorus line of smilies dancing the Can-Can.

Your next mission, should you decide to accept it, is a 'building a straw man' smiley. As always, should you or any member of your F.F. Team be caught or killed, the secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions.
