My best friend from college is travelling around El Salvador with her husband (he's Salvadoran), and she sent me a really lovely little thing she got at one of the local shops around there ---->

It's a glass cayman (http://www.lastrefuge.co.uk/images/html/reptiles/crocs/image_data/crocs04.jpg): a beautiful emerald green color, with his tail curled and his head curving back in the opposite direction. It makes a perfect bookweight to keep the pages open when you're making notes or reading on a table, but even if it didn't, it would still be just a lovely piece of art.

Do y'all have any pretty little things of insignificant monetary value which just appeal to you deeply? It's not sentimental value alone, mind you - I love my friend and very much appreciate her thinking of me as she hikes ancient pyramids - but I would love this little cayman even if I found it at a garage sale.

The first thing that sprang to mind is curled-up cat made of padauk wood given to me by a girlfriend a very long time ago. There's no real detail to it, just ears, back and tail, but the proportions are perfect.

My collection of dollar store gargoyles, especially the 'see no, hear no, speak no evil' ones. Of course gargoyles aren't really pretty per se.

Christmas ornaments my kids have made me. A little glazed clay ashtray my son made, I do not smoke, a painted rock my daughter gave me...all these mean more to me than my authentic nutcrackers, $200.00 porcelain dolls, and my antique china.

Well, I'm kind of a collecta-holic, because I just can't resist "pretty little things." The ones I have more of than any others (maybe not so little, but they sure are pretty) are Depression Era glass dishes. I have green ones, cobalt blue ones, amber ones, a couple of jadeite ones, some "crystal" (i.e., clear) ones, one or two in ultramarine, some forest green, some ruby red, some light blue, and I'm always tempted by more.

I also collect coins from foreign countries, esp. if I have been there myself.

Quilts are not "little" but they're pretty, too.

I used to have a whole bunch of baseball cards, but I gave those to my brother several years ago, as he kept up with it far better than I did.

I like little wind-up toys. I don't have as many as I used to. They're not exactly "pretty," but they're little (to reverse my other comment :D ).

I like different kinds of artwork.

I like clocks.

I like little boxes.

See what I mean? I just can't help myself. :P

I have a friend who collects and sells Depression glass. She has cabinets full in every color and pattern. I like the opalescent hobnailed looking stuff. Fenton, maybe? Anyway, they're definitely pretty little things. :)
