View Full Version : ATTN Bobby Flay Haters

This blog entry (http://flakmag.com/tv/flay.html) just chrystallized what had been for me a vague hatred of Flay's attitude.

The presence of a small studio audience, whose members are called on to participate in the food preparation, affords Flay ample opportunity to be a dick. On a recently aired episode, after instructing a volunteer to julienne some vegetables, Flay jeers at her inferior knife-work, inciting the rest of the room to laugh at her expense.

Flay honed this type of social brutality during his storied appearances on "Iron Chef." At the end of his first battle against Japanese Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto, a smack-talking, posturing Flay jumped triumphantly onto the counter. Standing on his cuttingboard and doing that dorky "raise the roof" hand gesture, Flay lead the crowd in chanting "U.S.A! U.S.A!" All of this, but primarily the standing on the cutting board part, grievously offended Morimoto and the rest of the Japanese contingent.

Hilariously, Flay lost the battle, and afterwards took every opportunity to complain to the press that it was unfair, that his equipment was inferior to his challenger's and that the odds were stacked against him. A year later, he was afforded a rematch, which he ended up winning. As the final buzzer sounded, Flay jumped up and stood on the counter once again. In typically obnoxious fashion, he pointed out that this time he wasn't standing on the cutting board cause he didn't want to offend anybody. "He's so American!" the young Japanese actress on the panel of judges tittered nervously. Morimoto just shook his head in disbelief.

He also looks eerily like the most evil person I've ever known in real life.

I've wondered sometimes if I don't subconsciously hate him just because of that, but no. He really is an asshole on his own assholean merit.

Yes. Yes he is. If I had been in that Iron Chef audience I would have find/made/produced some kind of offal and pelted him with it.

Don't like him at all, Morimoto should have buried a cleaver in his face. As much as his dickery, I dislike his cooking style. I've not seen him ever stray from that ultra-hip, Tex/Mex, "fruit and peppers in every single damned sauce" repetoire of his, he is just simply boring.

Now, Alton Brown, he's a good Food Network personality, though he doesn't get a lot of promotion. Sure, he's got "Good Eats", one of the best cooking shows I've ever seen and he's got the gig over at "Iron Chef America". But, all in all, he doesn't get the heavy promotion that Emeril or Rachel Ray gets.

BTW: Morimoto is opening a restaurant (well, in partnership with some others) here in Northern Virginia. I'll be there with my eating pants on, I assure you.

I don't know why that makes me laugh so much. I suppose it's because Morimoto is so damn classy and Flay is such a :butt: the cleaver would fit perfectly.

Yes! God yes. And he presents his lame-ass, overwrought fruit and peppers like he's just crapped out the Taj Mahal.

I need to make a point of seeking Brown out. I'm embarassed to say I'm barely familiar with him.

Oh man... You'd better take notes, eldar, seriously. I expect a full report.

Yes, you must. Alton Brown is a Food Network God. Science + cooking is a really good mix.

It also helps that he lives in the next town over, and a lot of the show takes place in my local Harry's and Kroger. But I swear that doesn't make me biased.

As for Bobby Flay, eh. He's in the same boat as Emeril to me. That would be a very quickly sinking boat with no radio or liferafts.

liv, i'm agog. you live in georgia and you don't know about alton brown? the next thing out of your mouth is going to be, but i've never been to eatzi's either. no, no, no. please. seek out the man.

rachael ray used to be a favourite of mine, back before she wore too much makeup and lost all that weight (and got her own line of eight million cookbooks, what, four tv shows?, and santokus with her name stamped on the handle, like she came up with the idea or something). now she's simply annoying - emeril hall of famer.

and i concur with everyone else's description of bobby flay. can the man actually cook? because i'm not convinced.

if there was one food tv star whose food you could eat for a solid week, who would you pick? i would pick iron chef french, i think.

I always liked Chen (Iron Chef Chinese).

Morimoto, BTW, has a restaurant in Philly. Always wanted to take a little road trip and try his place.

But I swear that doesn't make me biased.IIRC, when Alton did his Kitchen Makeover, he made a comment about how he still does his personal shopping in his local stores. livius, you need to at least get at good look at him so that you might be able to recognize him if you end up shopping where he does!As for Bobby Flay, eh. He's in the same boat as Emeril to me. That would be a very quickly sinking boat with no radio or liferafts.Showman, both, to be sure! But at least Emeril makes some effort to treat people with respect.

Flay used to totally abuse his cohost on one of his earlier shows. I always appreciated her comments since I think she was there specifically to make sure his usual narcissistic knife waving chattiness was accompanied by some actual cooking information.

TomJoe, I agree with all your assessments, but also, sadly, with Bree's comments about Rachel Ray. I still adore her, but she's a tad bit overexposed these days. I did love how she'd get a bit tipsy during her Inside Dish episodes and get all googly-eyed with the celebs. Too damned cute!

Damnit, I can't think of his name now, don't even know if he's on the Food Network. He's Asian-American, frequently has his parents on the show and cooks all sorts of wonderful asian cuisine. Frequently giving it his own spin. Damnit, I wish I could remember his name.

He's the one! Thanks Pesci. :)

Oddly when I go to the Food Network Chef/Show links from the main page, neither his bio or show are there. I assume his show is off the air and the only ones I see now are re-runs?
