View Full Version : Alone Food

We all eat weird-ass food when we're by ourselves. Don't give me that "Oh, I had a salad and grilled cheese" crap; you know that the last time you were totally alone in the house, with nobody watching, you prepared and ate something damn strange. Please share.
Two nights ago my husband was out recording his demo, BIL was on the beach in Mexico and my other roomie was tapping some girl somewhere. For once I had the house to myself. And this is what I ate:
Half a can of black beans topped with about a quarter-cup of leftover Feta, a small handful of pickled jalapeno slices, some chopped red onion left over from another culinary experiment, about a quarter-cup of grated pepper Jack cheese and some sad wilted parsley that I knew nobody else would ever accept as garnish, all put in a bowl and nuked until hot. Oh yeah, and four slices of double-smoked center-cut bacon that I had cooking while I assembled the above.
It was damn tasty, but it gave me the strangest dreams...

When I lived by myself in Metroville (that would be Atlanta area) and was completely miserable and lonely and working as a sad little intern/gopher/drone, I can only remember one time that I actually made real food for dinner. I lived there almost six months.
Most of the rest of the time I had:
Meal 1: Pour frozen blueberries in glass to fill. Add milk to cover. Get spoon.
or
Meal 2: Peanut butter M&M's and a glass of orange juice. (Not combined like Meal 1.)
Then I would take my meal and sit on the floor in my sleeping bag and watch tv. :deepsigh:
I don't like being alone, and I don't eat much when I'm unhappy, so that's all I can think of.

Nutella and spoon.
Hummus and crackers.
Cereal from the box and ginger ale (but not mixed).
Black beans with salsa and plain yogurt
Tortillas dipped in whatever strikes my fancy at the moment.
Hmmm. This list looks like I never eat anywhere but in front of the computer or tv, but that's not the case at all.

Nutella and spoon.
Wow. I usually just eat the Nutella. :cheerful:
My home alone dish is feta spooge* on wheat crackers. Man, that shit is good.
*feta, olive oil, salt, pepper, oregano, garlic powder, onion powder to taste, squished up with a fork until blended and spreadable.

Last night I had some baby corns dipped in horseradish.
I know I've posted this before, but it might not have been this board, so here goes:
a cheese roll with thick smoked-salmon-cream-cheese, a liberal sprinkling of peri-peri cashew nuts, and a few Peppadews (http://www.peppadew.com/).

Used to be that when nobody else was home, I'd fix things like a Miracle Whip sandwich or a sandwich with about a quarter inch of brown sugar pressed between peanut butter spread on both slices of bread.
Now? Canadian bacon or pepperoni slices with cream cheese. Or fish; nobody at my house likes fish but me. Or liver, nobody at my house likes liver but me.

Growing up, and occasionally still when vegetable ingredients of salads run out first, I would mix crouton and bacos in a bowl then add salad dressing.

Crunchy Purina Kitten Chow and celery.
Alright, everyone calm down...it was during a very stormy night and I was watching Shichinin no Samurai in the early am while all my friends were passed out on the floor after a marathon quarters session.
Technically I wasn't alone, but it sure seemed like it.

:wtfsign:
When I first read that, I was thinking some late night computer geek beverage combo of Dr. Pepper and Mountain Dew, but I went to the site. Damn! I want some of those puppies; they sound like perfect snack food! I'm gonna see if the US distributor really will distribute to me.
As for "alone food", I rarely prepare or eat my food with other people, so you can take any/all of my posts on what I've eaten for the OP. I suspect I'd eat much weirder things than I do now if someone else were living here.
Ronin, my coworker confessed that she tried a new dry dogfood she switched to recently -- because it smelled like chocolate. She said it wasn't bad, but didn't taste like chocolate.

Those new organic Cool Ranch Doritos are good with a sprinkling of Molly McButter on top. Check it out sometime.
Macaroni and cheese straight from the pot. Or ramen noodles, sans water, with butter and half the flavour packet (mmmm - msg), also straight from the pot. Somehow things just taste better when you don't have to do the dishes.

Hope you can get them. They are essential! Not blazing hot as chillies go, but enough of a bite, yet sweet and tasty enough to be eaten on their own, with cream cheese, in rolls and sandwiches, on pizzas (excellent!) and in salads. I don't tend to cook them, sticking to fresh or dried chillies for that, but no reason why you shouldn't.
I still haven't tried making the cheesecake (http://www.peppadew.com/webroot/english1/love%20bites_deserts.htm), but definitely want to!

I have been drunk on a few occassions and I like playing quarters, although it can be hard finding decent players, but I can't remember* being drunk enough that kitty chow and celery seemed like a good idea.
*of course that doesn't actually mean that it didnt happen.

Good thinking. Make sure it's toasted, though. It's delicious on bagels too.

Or mashed into the groove in celery, I'll wager. Yum.

Well, I'm seriously biased in favor of my mom's cream cheese/worcestershire/spices celery spread, so I'd have to stipulate that feta be creamier rather than crumblier for that particular use.

Peanut butter right out of the jar (on a spoon).
An entire bag of chips.
Doritos dipped in sour cream.
Three bowls of cereal.
Mostly though when I'm alone I get fast food. I rarely keep groceries in the house to tell you the truth.

Huh. Well that's two things I really like... I'll have to try 'em together sometime.
And for some reason that reminded me of eating rice with Ranch dressing. :yup:

Inherited from my father: 4 parts peanut butter mixed thoroughly with one part mayonnaise, spread on a banana cut half lengthwise (if going all out; usually I just lazily knife bites of PB onto bitten banana).
Feta cheese spooge on crackers after livius is through.

Fat-free Wheat Thins ROCK. Haven't done the ranch dressing thing but I can fully imagine how yummy it would be. (insert drooling smilie I'm too lazy to look for).

This should be in the short sharp painful confessions thread. But even I, sometimes, don't both to go to the search feature and find the right - or any - smilie.

Corn tortilla fried in a pan of oil (I have a pan that is exactly the size of a corn tortilla, so I imagine that's exactly what it was made for) and then smothered in sugar and cinnamon. Or sugar and margarine on white bread.
