View Full Version : Gaming hours curbed to control addiction
I admit to being over 40 and therefore unable to comprehend gaming addiction*, but it sounds from this that it's comparable to alcohol addiction: A Malaysian city is introducing a curfew for online gamers in a bid to stem a rise in the number of addicts. Any online gaming addicts among us? Or our immediate friends and family?
* In an Economist article I think ... yes (http://www.economist.com/displaystory.cfm?story_id=4246109) and yes (http://www.economist.com/displaystory.cfm?story_id=4247084), but 19% of American gamers are over 50 (http://www.economist.com/displaystory.cfm?story_id=4246109)
Of course the reason I'm not close to getting hooked on online gaming could be :badcon:

I have gone through phases where I was massively addicted to playing games for weeks or months at a time. I still have bursts of it from time to time, but nothing like the past. My main unhealthy Internet addiction over the last couple years is right here. At least forum addiction is somewhat productive in that there's a degree of social interaction and it's often educational. I still spend more time than I should reading and posting, though.

Kansas City limits gamers at casinos to a $500 loss. And there are no betting hours to supposedly curb addiction. As if everyone works 9am to 5pm. And assuming not a one of us can afford to lose $500. A nanny casino industry! I'm not a gambler. I lost $30 once and never went back. I've got enough monkeys on my back to add another! :club:

Good article. I agree environment can trigger urges. But simply working full time could be said to be a trigger for alcoholism/drug use.

The Chinese are apparently about to pass a law that requires all online games to have a built in system to limit play time and/or severely cripple people's game characters once they've played a certain amount.
