View Full Version : Interesting Licence Plates

Not too long ago, I saw a car in a parking lot that had the licence plate "FE MADN". That got me scratching my head for a bit until I remembered that the chemical symbol for "Iron" is "Fe" -- hence, "Iron Maiden." Clever!

Then, just a few days ago, I saw one that read "MYOTIS". That one didn't take too long to figure out. Myotis is a genus of bats, and one of the people in our department studies bats, so I'll bet it was her car.

I understand that a prominent politician had a personalized licence plate that read "AUH2O". "Au" is the chemical symbol for "Gold," and "H2O, of course, is "Water" -- so, Barry Goldwater.

Seen any good ones lately?

Cheers,

Michael

Not lately, but when I was stationed at Charleston AFB someone (a pilot obviously) had this one, "C17AV8R"

Not recently, but I did actually see these in real life.

One was something like

L8 IM L8

. . . on a white VW Rabbit

The other was

MC BTCH

The second part was easy. Then, Caledoniaphile that I am, I realized:

"Mc" or "Mac" is the Scottish patronymic prefix for "Son of . . ."

Today we saw A13 BUS on a bus.

The A13 was quite close (although my road sense is crap and we may have actually have been on the A13 at the time) but, I'm sure that bit was just coincidence.

In Wyoming the license plates display a county number on the left side. Sweetwater County, Wyoming is County 4. There were a number of plays on that theme there, even with the custom plates being limited to four letters or numerals. I saw one on a Nissan 300ZX driven by an attractive blonde woman: 4 PLAY, another on a big 4x4: 4 SHUR, one on a rusted out Chevy Suburban: 4 NTTN, one on a Ford Bronco: 4 DDDD, and another on a newer Mercedes 300D: 4 EVER.

One of my best buddies has an aging, and increasingly decrepit, Chevy Suburban (a huge, 4 wheel drive, panel truck) for which he obtained vanity plates that read:

3HR TUR

Which, of course, is the phrase associated with the Minnow of Gilligan's Island fame....a "three hour tour".

I think it fits splendidly.

Back when I was in college, there was a guy who had the plate XLER8 on his motorcycle, which I thought was pretty neat.

Okay, I must be extra slow tonight, because I still haven't figured these out.

4 DDDD = FORD, I suppose.

I thought about that, but it seemed too obvious. Maybe I'm making it harder than it has to be?

So what's 4 NTTN ?

Maybe it should've been 4 DDUH.
