http://jacksonville.com/tu-online/stories/092304/geo_16716704.shtml

this paper is sold in both ga and fl. the ga edition is called the georgia times-union and this story was on the cover of the paper. the fucking cover. Waycross is only about 34 miles from where I live.

Basically, a guy who owns a tattoo shop in Waycross, Georiga (from now on referred to as mayberry hell) decided that he would like to use a back room to start selling adult videos and literature and whatnot. He was told that he had to get a license for it and when he decided to do so, a bunch of small minded fucks, the ones mentioned in the title of my thread, got together to see what they could do to curtail his business venture.

especially nice are the following quotes

We're faced with a situation now that makes us move very quickly to protect our community so they broke their own rules to send a message.

said he especially wanted to address "the sleaze joints.''
wow, that's really open minded.

"There's a better way to live,''

like this is some sort of quality of life issue.

I think this is a God-fearing community, and Although the city could not deny anyone his or her constitutional rights, "we don't want sin to run rampant,'
well, jeez as long as your clear that you are doing this for religious reasons.
rampant sin. someone starts selling magazines and the next thing you know there could be freethought or even any thought at all.

and finally

"We're highly opposed to adult entertainment," resident Mike Crawford said. "... We're thankful to have a commission ready to work with us."

yeah, entertainment for adults, the horror.

I live in this area. Fucking dumbasses. I miss atlanta.

Yeah, I get the same thing where I live. One town I lived in has had an adult video/mag/toy shop for decades. Never any problems there as far as I can tell, but the police regularly try to crack down on them by sending minors in to see if they can get admitted. There are articles in the paper sometimes about efforts to close them down. Nevermind that they are located along the interstate, next to the Harley store and there are 0 residences in the area. The storefront is neat, discreet, no loitering in the area etc.

The town I now live in simply doesn't allow any form of adult entertainment. A Family video opened up and for those not familiar with the chain they are comparable to a Hollywood Video or Blockbuster Video except that FV typically has a small backroom with adult videos. The town told them they could open up, but not with the adult section.

I agree that it's sad that in 2004 so many people in this country are still so uptight about sexuality, but I would never go to an "adult" bookstore anyway. I mean I've been to a few in my lifetime, but every one I've been to has been really disgusting. (In the States, anyway. I found the places in Amsterdam and Germany a lot less dingy and creepy). Anyway what's the point anymore? You can get anything you want from the Internet delivered right to your door, or better yet free via Usenet.

Nah, some stuff you want to try on / try out before buying :D

Now I will say that with GameFly and NetFlix there seems to be little need for brick and mortar movie/game rental stores anymore. I think there is even a porn vid outfit with a similar business model.

Once someone finds a way to deconstruct atoms, convert them to binary packets and reassemble them on the other end there will be no reason to every leave home again. A hermit's dream come true.
