Okay, so I saw an episode of Friends the other day, the one where Rachel is desperate to pick up some guy played by Tate Donovan. Failing, she resorts to donning her old high school cheerleading outfit because she claims to have always gotten her man while wearing it. Hilarity naturally ensues, and Rachel eventually catches the eye of the object of her affections.

All this just got me to thinking. What do we wear to attract the opposite sex, and what do they wear that we can't resist? I'm thinking of four broad categories here:

1 - What we wear in 'real life' that we think we look good in.
2 - What 'costume' (costume being a very subjective definition - anything other than streetwear counts) we think makes us irresistable.
3 - What the opposite sex wears in real life that attracts us.
4 - What 'costume' the opposite sex wears that we just go ga-ga over.

To get the ball rolling, I'll go first:

1 - It's pretty casual, but I like a simple black t-shirt and jeans, with my suede jacket if I'm dressing it up a bit. It's kind of my standard 'pub' ensemble. Without the jacket, I simply must wear a watch, too - I just think it adds something to not have my wrist naked. If I'm in the beer garden during the day, I'll add black sunnies. All very boring, I know, but my thinking is the casual simplicity of it all will be like catnip to the ladies :).

2 - Never really worn or been asked to wear a traditional costume. Not sure this works for men as well as it does for women. I will, however, confess to occasionally wearing a suit to a function that I know it's a little too dressy for. For instance, I have friends involved in local theatre and got an invite to the cast party after the last performance. There were going to be many young actresses there, I knew, and that all the other guys would be dressed like slacker bums (you know, black t-shirts, jeans). I figured a suit would help me stand out from the crowd.

3 - Skirts of any kind. Sorry, ladies, but I can't stand a woman who goes for a night on the town in pants. Yuck. Summer dresses, too, can't get enough of 'em.

4 - Okay, it only happens at fancy dress parties, but there's inevitably a french maid there that I can't take my eyes off. I wish my tastes were more exotic, I really do, but that just does it for me every time. Especially if I can see her stocking tops. I'm sure it just means I've watched Rocky Horror one too many times. Mmmm, Magenta.

Anyone else?

1. I like simple, clean lines. Usually a pair of well-fitting jeans or black slacks with a nice top to go out. I don't wear jewelry but if I get around to it, I might try to add some to an outfit. Rarely though. Don't dress things up with jackets or sunglasses or stuff like that myself. Just me, my shirt and my pants.

2. My husband likes the style of Laura Kroft particularily. Actually, he stopped by an army surplus store in the States in the summer and picked me up a tank top, it was a large though. I'm a small.

Was shopping last week and noticed a whole bunch of army gear in stores, most likely because of the movie Jarhead coming out. I choose between an army/Laura Kroft style outfit for my man, nice for casual wear too mind you, or two really nice tops keeping upcoming Christmas parties in mind. I choose the tops, hehe. :yup:

3. Men in nice fitting jeans. I love a hard-on through a well-fitted jean. Not tight jeans, fitted jeans. I'm sorry to be so blunt, I'm not usually, but its the only thing that I like specifically as far as clothes on a man are concerned, other than just decent clothes. My husband is not very good with clothes and he really won't let me help, for the record. Has some jeans though, and this is very good.

4. I'm not aware of any costume I prefer, not even just your average uniform. Maybe I'll think of something later but.......

1 - I like to dress like a grownup. I don't mean gray business suits and closed-toe pumps, but not for me the baby tees and barrettes that other women my age affect. I wear a lot of black, a lot of simple lines, and sometimes a punk-rock deconstructed touch -- I have a blue blazer that I cut up so it has a weird shark-gill-like configuration of rents on the back where the purple lining shows through, and people are always offering to buy it from me.

2 - I don't ever feel irresistible, but I do have a pair of knee-high black boots that make me feel pretty cute. I also like wearing gartered stockings -- lots comfier than pantyhose, and they make me feel sexy even if nobody knows they're there.

3 - Original style. When I first met my husband he was wearing a white kimono with kanji script all over it, a cowboy hat and Doc Martens. He looked great. The last guy I was head-over-heels for spends a good deal of time at the sewing machine customizing his clothes. He's never worn anything off the rack and unaltered AFAIK, and he also always looks great. (We're still good friends, and he still criticizes my outfits. Says they're "boring". OK, Miss Thing.)

I have a few definite no-nos. NO tapered jeans, EVER. No visible brand names. No pants hanging off the ass. T-shirts with words on them, unless they're band T-shirts, are rarely good. And very few men can pull off short-sleeved dress shirts. I also dislike polos, but I think it's because of the people who usually wear them, not because of the shirts themselves.

4 - See #3. As long as it's original, creative and looks like he went to some effort, I approve. I can think of specific instances, but I don't have a general costume "rule".
Sorry, ladies, but I can't stand a woman who goes for a night on the town in pants. Yuck.
I sometimes go out in kind of a drag-king, Marlene Dietrich getup -- suit, watch chain, finger waves, pointy shoes and so on. The boys go nucking futs.

Cross dressing is sexy, I think - even when some guys do it. But it has to be done well; no slouches.

Quality is sexy - good tailoring. If only I could afford it. And if only Kiwi men were more into it - for themselves, as well as for us.

Stockings feel great - stockings and no knickers. :yup:

Certain fabrics are so sensual I could just die. :vapours:

Other than that, some birthday suits are kinda hot.

1: Jeans, collared/low cut shirts, pinstripe suits, long pants, anything that isn't a skirt. Skirts are ick and ew. I dress for comfort, but I still know what looks good on me. The amount of stupid frumpy geek girls I see walking around with big boobs and high-cut roundneck T-shirts is gross. Remind me way too much of the Polish giant who was my 6th grade teacher who tried to smother me with her boobs once. *shudders*
2: Um... I guess it depends on the desiring individual. Fucked if I know.
3: *shrugs* Some things look good on some people and bad on others. It depends on the person. If they dress to their bodyshape and colouring, then it's all good. I mean, everybody else looked like a twit, but Robert Pattinson usually shows up to premieres looking like he's just gotten out of bed and thrown on whatever was on the floor (in this case, leather pants and a velvet jacket) and the boy still looked like sex on a stick. Other people aren't so lucky. Peter Jackson, case point. Wonderful film maker, cute as a button in that overgrown hobbit kind of way, but really, not so lucky in the suited-to-clothes-wearing department.
4: Chaps on a nice arse is always good for a bit of stimulating eyecandy. ;) Really, a person who looks good and knows they look good, no matter what they're wearing, is the sexiest thing on the planet.

1. 3/4 pants with double pluggers and an appropriately coloured urban-T is my casual rig. Nothing special, but they're decent enough to attract a second-glance.

2. Not really a costume per se, but my pick-up 'costume' starts with white bowlers. White shoes are completely hot right now, I wouldn't dream of going out on the town without them. I also dig dark jeans with a light urban T with sleeves short enough that I can flare my tough-sticker with a little tricep manipulation if necessary. I also now wear assorted jewellery I picked up from in Europe. Especially effective is the shell bracelet I got from Barcelona, gold, Jerry.

3. I dig pants on girls, you can always get a better idea of ass from pants than skirts. Snug ones. Also am a big fan of tight, high neck 3/4 sleeve cotton tops. The booby-pronunciation in those things is beyond awesome.

4. In the cast of the ‘costume’ I was talking about I dig those deeply plunging necklines that go down past the belly button so that boob concealment becomes dependant upon double sided tape. Those things are genius. More traditional costumes I dig Xena and Trinity outfits. :howl:

Well I wear cargo pants when it's too cold to wear cargo shorts, and cargo shorts when it's to hot to wear cargo pants. Normal jeans enter the mix when all my cargo stuff is dirty.
I wear gray, green, blue, red etc. shirts; whatever is clean that day. I wear leather sandles or tennis shoes.
Now that I comb my hair, well, I think I look pretty damn good.

I think emo girls with the hair done right are hot.
I think short skirts are hot, even more so on emo girls.
Skin tight jeans are nice, but short skirts, on emo girls, are hotter.
Any tight shirt, on an emo girl, or anyone else who looks good in one, is hot.
Clothes that show the midriff, of an emo girl, or any other one. :lecher:

I hate, hate, hate high heeled shoes. They look ugly and do nasty damage to the women's feet who wear them.
I hate any pointed toed shoes on women, soooooo ugly.

My new sexiest item of apparel - the sari. I'm not exactly a newcomer to them, the whole of Mum's side of the family is Anglo-Indian, but this has meant I've usually only seen them worn by my much older aunts and grandmother. Not today. I had dinner with a friend going to an 'international' party and she modeled the sari she'd decided to wear. I had a Keanu moment. Whoa. I mean, not so much her, she's nice and all, but just seeing the garment on someone pretty who was my own age. Kind of contemporised the whole thing for me. Long live the sari!

Saris are awesome because they look great on everybody: old, young, svelte, chubby. I have a couple but since I'm not south Asian I feel like a poseur wearing them on the street. I do rock them at Burning Man, though. One is predominantly pink and one is blue; I really want an orange one as well.

They could, but formal occasions are a bit rare for me and I have a few awesome (and very time-sensitive) dresses that have priority. I'll wear the saris at formal events when I have more lumps to conceal.
