The sun don't come up until 9:00 a.m. and it goes down at 4:30 p.m.. It's been cloudy for days, we have almost no direct sunlight.
I want some sun. I'm jealous of anybody who gets sun today. :hmph:
How's the weather for everybody?

It's beautifully sunny here today.
But, as Crumb notes, the temperature is about 29F (-2C) and the wind is blowing at a steady 20 mph out of the east (gusting to 30-40 mph).
This is a normal winter condition for here (here being Portland, Oregon/Vancouver, Washington) when there is a high pressure to the east of the Cascade Mountains (which are east of us) in the high, dry and colder eastern Oregon/Washington. With a low pressure system stalled in the valley, what we get are clear, frigid sunny days with high winds blowing east to west carrying frigid and dry air through the Columbia River Gorge.
It's fuckin' cold. It's Balaclava weather.
The tricky part will be when the warm, wet air from the Pacific Ocean to the west pushes in with moisture. The ground will be cold and dry and the moist air will be pushed up and drop its resultant precipitation through the cold air to produce snow and ice. In the past, we've had some hellacious ice storms...and some notoriously puny snowstorms.

It's 39F here and raining. No snow for us :( I guess I should be happy that we aren't having an ice storm..

Like godfry, it's quite sunny here today. Not a cloud to be seen. But when I left for work this morning, it was only 15ºF (-9ºC) out. By lunch, it had warmed up to 25ºF (-4ºC). Fortunately, not much wind though.
As a co-worker said while we were walking back in, "I'd rather have sunny and freezing, than snowing and warmer."

Yeah, well, it still sucks here. 5 inches of snow today, high again in the high single digits (-6ºF when I left for work this morning). Tomorrow it's supposed to "warm up" all the way to high teens or 20ish, but the high winds will make the wind chill lower than it is today. Fucking bullshit that Rochester has been warmer than us for over a week. :glare:

I can stand cold when it's still, but the wind just cuts right through most half-fast outerwear. One has to really bundle up to counter the wind. And I agree with you and your co-worker.

And we've still been about 10º below normal for this time of year.
C'mon now, Roland, you're a smart girl. What did you expect to happen when you moved away from the warming effects of the Great Lakes? The wind can just whip right across those corn fields, whereas here we've got lots of hills and rivers and valleys and such to break things up. Oh, and again, don't let me forget the lake, which helps to moderate temperatures. Y'all can keep the midwest winters, tyvm!

Heh. It was only the last 2 years I lived close to Erie; before that I was over an hour south, so not so much effect. And it's hillier here in Iowa than where I lived in NW Ohio. :dunno:
You still get 3X as much snow as us, so :P

Some form of precipitation has just started. It sounds like sleet or freezing rain.

We had sleet yesterday, and there was supposed to be an inch or more snow accumulation. We didn't get any. It's sunny and about 32F here.

Personally, I like winter. I used to live in North Carolina, and hated the fact that we hardly ever got any "proper" winter weather. I like living in a region with four distinct seasons.
Last I checked, it was about 10 degrees F, and it'll doubtless get into the single digits tonight. Time for a nice, steaming mug of hot cocoa!
Cheers,
Michael

Didn't you spend some time in the mountains here? We get a pretty harsh winter, though not like the Midwest does.
There is ice over everything outside this morning. I just called in to work and took the day off. On Tuesday I slipped on the back steps and my left hip is still hurting from that so it seems good to just stay home today.

I like winter too--I'd rather have it be 20 degrees than 90. But the teens are about my limit, then I start wishing for spring...

The weather in Tulsa town is frightful for sure. I took our daughter to school this morning because the roads are iced over. It was 4 degrees outside when I arrived at the school this morning. We had a low of zero for the wee hours of the morning. The wind is picking up and I blanketed howie this morning and he seemed very pleased as when he saw me pull it off the hook he turned his head to me with a look as if to say "it's about damn time!"
Warren is still in Wyoming where the temps are more like what you would find in Alaska. He should be calling anytime to let me know how the evening went, then off to bed. I don't go back to work until tomorrow. Expecting a conference call to see what we are to do for the weekend.
It has truly been a long week around here. Warren and I work on 2nd and Boulder and accross the street from us is a major hotel chain. To say the least the temps around here have been very cold with winds up to 35 miles an hour at any given time for about 2 weeks now. All hell broke loose on Monday as several water mains broke throughout the Tulsa area, but we had a major break downtown. Underneath the road and our building we have a major electrical vault that contains most all the power supplies to the businesses downtown as well as computer server and network vaults for our offices. Around 2:30 monday afternoon the water break took place and flooded 2nd and boulder as well as causing the road to buckle and crater. The water went under ground and got into all the vaults and caused a black out of downtown Tulsa. The Tulsa World offices are around the corner from us and they had to move to their other location to put together the newspaper for tuesday which was late and went out with wednesdays paper. The paper had a picture of downtown in the black and the headlines were something to the effect of " The night the lights went out in Tulsa."
I worked from home monday evening and tuesday via phone and fax as we were and still are SOL as far as the computer systems are concerned. As of wednesday the power was back on to most of downtown and now from all accounts from the local news media the power to downtown is completely restored. Our offices now have power and phone service--that is what I was told yesterday. Email services are back up, but they are having to replace all of our servers. They found boxes in New York and they are being shipped and should arrive today. They hope to have everything up and running by monday at the earliest. The controllers were sent out to the different field locations on tuesday evening. Warren is in Wyoiming trying to do his job via the plant outside of Kemmer. Other controllers were sent to Farmington, New Mexico and Mobile, Alabama. No estimated date has been set for the guys to come home. I am sure it will be a couple of days after everything is back up and running-- just in case.....The girls and I are doing fine, but we miss him very much. You guys won't be hearing from him until he gets home. So yeah, spring sounds really good to me right now.

These last two days were freakin awesome! Sun was out, above zero temps, all the snow melted. Smelled great around here, all fresh and springy.
You know what I forgot all about when mentioning the idea of direct sunlight? I forgot snow blindness! Man, I always forget that one needs sunglasses still in winter!

It's been a little colder than normal here since Thanksgiving, but today was quite normal for this time of year. I'm not sure what the temp got up to, but I was quite comfortable outside in a short sleeved shirt this afternoon. It's 36 F right now, and should get into the upper 20's before the sun comes up. Oh, and I haven't seen a cloud in about a week or so. Fairly typical for this area.
The forecast for the next week is about the same for each day: clear and sunny with highs in the upper 50's-low 60's and overnight lows in the mid to upper 20's. That's pretty typical winter weather here. It does snow, mostly because of the high altitude (~6k'), but it's almost always melted by the next afternoon.

True, that. I loved the mountains, where they can indeed have decent winters. I've always said that if I ever go back to the Southeast, it's only if I can live in the mountains -- or at least the western Piedmont.
Cheers,
Michael
