Okay, in the confessions thread I said I like eating certain foods raw that a lot of people find weird. Celery, onions, garlic and lemons are just some of them. But I always thought everyone had some food like this, whether it's just good-ol raw cookie-dough or raw asparagus.

So what's your raw indulgence?

I have been known to eat raw ramen noodles when drunk.

they're like chips only oriental and cooler.

I'll eat celery raw and though it is a processed food, peanut butter out of the jar.

Grass, when I'm sitting on it. Seriuosly. I picked up this habit at school when we sat on the grass of plucking grass, then pealing away the outer blades and breaking off the tiny, soft, white bit at the bottom and eating it. I always do it unconsciously when sitting on grass, like when I'm picknicking.

Eating celery raw is normal where I come from, plain or dipped in cream cheese.

I like eating leftover pizza right out of the fridge. Sure it tastes good reheated, but it tastes just as good cold and it's less work.

raw popcorn kernels. Also wheat kernels. We need a missing-tooth smilie.

Raw is the only way to eat celery. It loses most of it's distinctiveness when cooked. I too like raw lemons, but prefer limes.

I rolled my eyes at the thought of eating Ramen Noodles uncooked until a few years ago when I was mentoring a nine-year-old boy who told me they were great (and inexpensive.) Not wanting to appear uncool to a nine-year-old I tried it and promptly discovered how tasty they are. Those flavor (salt!) packages make the noodles taste better than most pre-spiced snack packages. Mmmmm. Don't forget to smash up the noodles in the bag before opening it.

I used to eat frozen orange juice concentrate straight from the can. It is pretty intense. I am more of a fresh OJ fan nowadays so I don't have the opportunity to consume the frozen variety as often.

Adora, I'd like to know what exotic foreign culture you live in where celery is not eaten raw.

Adora, I'd like to know what exotic foreign culture you live in where celery is not eaten raw.... or onions or garlic or lemons ...

I eat all of those raw and know plenty of other people who do, too. But I do have a friend who has asked me not to eat the lemon wedge from my iced tea at restaurants while she can see me. She says it freaks her out. Whenever we go out, she will turn away at some point and tell me to go for it.

Australia. Apparently it's a big thing with some people. I dunno why. I know my brother doesn't eat it raw cos he's a pussy who doesn't like picking the fibers out of his teeth, but other people are all blegh about it apprently because of the taste or something.

Weirdasses.

Raw is the only way to eat celery. It loses most of it's distinctiveness when cooked. That's the whole point. Raw celery is(imho) absolutely vile, cooking it is the only way to make it tolerable.

Mmmm mmm, garlic and butter sandwiches! Here's the recipe, demonstrated by one of my sister's roommates years ago (we watched her assemble the sandwich while we were all chatting in the kitchen): some dense but fairly squishy bread, not toasted
soft (room temp) butter, spread generously on insides of both bread slices
raw garlic sliced to be somewhat even widths stuck into butter on both sides
salt and pepper to taste

Assemble and enjoy. This roommate was telling us how she and her father used to make these sandwiches when she was a little girl. And that she met her boyfriend one night after she'd eaten a garlic and butter sandwich. She had settled at home for the night, but then a friend called and told her to come to a party. She went, garlic breath and all, and met her future husband.

She also made garlic popcorn using popcorn, melted butter, chopped raw garlic in mass quantities and seasoning salt. Another idea I've since adopted.

I don't think this necessarily counts because it's, like, cuisine and stuff, but there's a restaurant near my house that does a wicked raw-beef thing. It's an appetizer, or is supposed to be, but when I go I usually get two orders and make it a meal. As far as I've been able to figure out, they take absolutely lean raw beef, cut it on the bias in infetismally thin strips, and marinate it in lemon juice for awhile as for ceviche. Then they bring it forth, sprinkled with chopped toasted peanuts and mint, and it is so. good. The texture is kinda like beef cooked rare, but the flavor is indescribable; kind of minerally, mild, but with a hint of blood. I love it, and have found that it is one of the best things in the world for a hangover.

I am also crazy about raw fish in the form of sushi (nigiri) and sashimi. The heavy protein buzz, straight from the plate to my bloodstream with no effort whatsoever on my part. And oysters? Don't even get me started.

On topic? Celery is kinda okay raw, when stuffed with something fun like cream cheese with anchovies and pimientos mashed in. Otherwise it's too much work. When I was little I used to dread the days when Dad made my lunch, because he would invariably load me up with unadorned, raw celery sticks, with the strings and all. Mom would at least stuff them with peanut butter.

Pesci, oh mah gah, I so must try the raw-garlic sandwich. That sounds amazing.

Add some olive oil to that lemon juice and replace the peanuts and mint with parmesan and capers and you've got Carpaccio. If that counts, I'm insanely down with it.

I'm afraid I can't say the same for the garlic sammich because I have issues with unmelted butter on bread, but I love the garlic popcorn idea. I make a melted butter, paprika, cayenne, garlic powder, thyme, salt, pepper cajun popcorn kinda thing. I'll try it with raw garlic instead of the powder next time. :)

Ah...Lemon. Munch. Yum.

I'll eat the whole line of vegetables, particularly if you give me a dressing dip.

Raw fruit. Peaches. Apricots. Raspberries. Blackberries. Mmmmm.

I eat potatoes raw, upon occasion.

But fish...are you kidding me? Sushi is leftover bait, man.

I've no desire to consume raw meat, either.

Very thin slices of salmon can be drizzled in a vinaigrette usually containing lemon juice and then eaten that way. I've been told that technically the fish isn't raw because the acid "cooks" it, but try telling that to skeptical diners :).

My raw indulgence is...raw macaroni noodles. Just a handful, pop 'em in your mouth and chew chew chew. Dr Atkins would have a shit fit.

To some...hell, to too damned many. Here, just north of trendy Kah-lee-fornia, sushi is going through a second revival. A friend and I came up with an idea for a string of sushi stands...called Tasty Bait Sushi Stands. "Ptomaine never tasted so good."

Filet mignon as rare as possible. Fortunately in the US 'very rare' filet comes to the table red, oozing, and a little warm. mmmmmm...

Also cookie dough and powdered drink mixes.

All three together would be ideal.

Some people like their kittens baked into pie. I like mine freshly cleaned and wet. If not wet, then I will lick it until it is.

Isn't that also known as a ceviche? Thinly sliced fish marinated in something acidic like lemon juice?

I can't think of anything that I eat raw that would be considered strange. I do enjoy raw oysters and sashimi, but that's pretty normal.

He he... My dad first encountered Steak Tartare in France when he was in the army (ca 1960). He had them take it back and cook it. Apparently it turned out to be a pretty good burger, but the waiter never recovered. :D
