Yes, the holiday is over and the wicker man is merely ashes now. It's time to hunker down and start polishing the May Pole. :giggle:

Anyway, since the "orthodox" and "traditional" in the crowd have tried to paint me as some kind of Calvinist, I thought I'd oblige and show them my true Calvinist side. Hence, the new avatar.

First, I want to thank Bill Watterson for creating such stupendous set of characters, of which Calvin is one. And, Calvin is a "freethinker" in the truest sense of the word, too. It's not just Calvin I admire, but Hobbes, too, Watterson's voice of nonhuman reason in his works. Here's to Calvin's long-suffering mom and his major source of misinformation, his dad. Then, of course, there's Susie and Mr. Buns and Moe, the schoolyard bully. My new avatar was adapted from one of Watterson's Sunday "Calvin & Hobbes" runs, wherein Calvin was sitting for his school picture.

Second, I want to thank Google for having the art in their image database.

Lastly, and most importantly, I want to thank liv for adapting the 16 mug shots into the changing avatar. Thanks again, liv!

Ain't he great, folks?

Does he fit me?

Calvin and Hobbes are iconic figures. I wandered aimlessly for months after Watterson gave up the ghost on this comic.

Oh... I do know that feeling. I was crushed. I could barely get the energy to go to the front porch to get the Sunday newspaper and find the funnies, knowing there'd be no "Calvin & Hobbes."

I'm not sure what happened at the bOregonian, my local daily rag, but about three months back, they started running the entire strip again. From the beginning. It's all familiar, but still funny as ever.

I'm lovin' it.

My favorite Hobbes quote: "Maybe eventually we can make language a complete impediment to understanding."

I have a stack of the Calvin and Hobbes anthologies.

... Hey ... since just about every action comic has been made into a Hollywood movie, maybe it's time for Spaceman Spiff? Just think of the special effects for the monsters!

Someone in a local atheist group sent me an email containing a Calvin and Hobbes strip made into an Xmas card. I cannot find it right now. The first three frames on the front cover had Calvin going on about the questions he had about Santa Claus myth and such. The fourth frame was inside the card, with Calvin saying "I have the same questions about God." If this is a true Calvinism, why do I see so many pickups, SUVs and vans around here with a sticker of Calvin kneeling before a cross?

Because the makers of those stickers never paid any real attention to what Calvin was given to say. I find those stickers (and the ones of him urinating on something) to be a source of mild amusement. When I get a chance to speak to the owner of one of the vehicles with these items attached, I indicate an interest in the sticker. It usually goes something like this:

"Hey... Interesting sticker. That's Calvin, isn't it?"

"Yep, it sure is."

"Y'know, I've never seen Calvin (or Susie) do that in any of the comic strips."

"Yeah, well, it's Calvin, alright."

"Where does somebody get one of those stickers?"

"I got mine at Zombieworshipper Motor Accessories."

"Kewl...Can I tell them you sent me?"

"Sure, tell'em Frank sent you."

"Great, Frank, I'll tell them, then I'll tell them that I'm reporting them to Andrews McMeel Publishing for violation of copyright and trademark laws. They'll appreciate that."

Then I do. Report them, that is.

Everytime I see that next hardcover, beautifully bound, set of Calvin and Hobbes anthologies, I turn green with envy.

And, I do love the avatar. Excellent choice, good sir.
